Hire WordPress Developers in Vietnam

Contents (8 sections)

TL;DR: WordPress developers in Vietnam earn $1,080 to $3,130+ a month working for international clients on our rate card, the lowest floor of the five markets compared, and we shortlist 6-8 candidates within 24 hours. The BLS medians for US web and software developers were $92,650 and $135,980 a year in May 2025.

Patchstack puts the median time to mass exploitation of heavily exploited WordPress flaws at 5 hours. A flaw disclosed at 6:00 pm in San Francisco in September lands at 8:00 am in Ho Chi Minh City, the start of a developer's day shift there.

Key takeaways

  • Vietnam's floor sits $50 below Indonesia's, but its open ceiling runs $860 higher.
  • PHP 8.2, which 24.8% of WordPress sites run, loses security support on 31 December 2026.
  • Vietnam's personal data law says silence is not consent, and Decree 356 bars default consent mechanisms.
  • Vietnamese is the site language on 1.16% of WordPress installs reporting to WordPress.org, ahead of Indonesian.

What WordPress Developers Earn in Vietnam Working for International Clients

Vietnam's WordPress card opens $1,010 below Malaysia's, and its open top sits $940 under the Philippine one. The figures are what WordPress developers in each market earn working directly for foreign companies, before any employer or platform costs.

Market Monthly pay working for international clients (USD)
Vietnam $1,080-$3,130+
Indonesia $1,130-$2,270+
Thailand $1,500-$5,000
Philippines $1,520-$4,070+
Malaysia $2,090-$5,040+

Monthly pay for WordPress Developers in Vietnam working for international clients, by market

Monthly ranges from the Remote (Working for International Clients) figures on our rate cards for Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia, converted at ExchangeRate-API mid-market rates for 14 September 2026.

The Vietnam card quotes ₫28,000,000 to ₫81,000,000+ a month, converted at ₫25,873 to the dollar. Its top is nearly three times its floor. Patching brochure sites and owning a store's custom checkout code are different jobs, so decide where in that band yours sits before you compare candidates.

Through Second Talent you pay one monthly fee that bundles salary, payroll taxes, statutory contributions and our service fee, quoted per role and market. Our pricing page explains the monthly subscription, and our WordPress developers page compares markets across Asia.

US Pay Benchmark for WordPress Developers

BLS has no WordPress occupation. Site builds, themes and upkeep map to Web Developers (15-1254), while plugin, block and WooCommerce extension work maps to Software Developers (15-1252).

BLS OEWS, May 2025, national Web Developers (15-1254) Software Developers (15-1252)
Median annual $92,650 $135,980
10th percentile, monthly $4,010 $6,870
25th percentile, monthly $5,350 $8,770
Median, monthly $7,720 $11,330
75th percentile, monthly $10,520 $14,330
90th percentile, monthly $13,520 $17,890

Monthly figures are the annual wages on the BLS OEWS profiles for 15-1254 and 15-1252 divided by 12, rounded to the nearest $10.

The printed top of the Vietnam card sits $880 under the US web developer 10th percentile. A developer who maintains client sites fits the web developer column. One who writes plugins and checkout extensions fits the software developer column.

Salary is only part of the US cost. In the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, wages and salaries made up 68.5% of employer compensation costs for full-time private industry workers, and benefits the other 31.5%.

For a one-off build, our WordPress developer cost-to-hire page sets out US contract rates.

Time Zone Overlap: Ho Chi Minh City Against ET, CT and PT

An 8 am to 5 pm day in Ho Chi Minh City runs from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am in New York in September. Plugin updates, backups and cache rebuilds do the least damage to a US store in those hours.

Vietnam keeps UTC+7 all year with no daylight saving, and US clocks stay on daylight time from 8 March to 1 November 2026, per NIST.

The arithmetic: 8:00 am in Ho Chi Minh City is 01:00 UTC, which is 9:00 pm the previous evening in New York under EDT (UTC-4) and 6:00 pm in San Francisco under PDT (UTC-7). The Vietnamese day ends at 10:00 UTC, or 6:00 am Eastern.

Ho Chi Minh City shift (UTC+7) ET overlap (EDT / EST) CT overlap (CDT / CST) PT overlap (PDT / PST) Hours between 22:00 and 06:00
8 am-5 pm 0 / 0 0 / 0 0 / 0 0
1 pm-10 pm 2 / 1 1 / 0 0 / 0 0
6 pm-3 am 7 / 6 6 / 5 4 / 3 5
8 pm-5 am 8 / 8 8 / 7 6 / 5 7

Each shift is nine clock hours with a meal break, counted against a 9 am to 5 pm US day. The 1 pm row gives a New York marketing team two live hours in September for launch checks, with no night hours. A store that wants someone on hand through a US sale needs one of the last two rows.

For employees, Vietnam's Labor Code 2019 counts 22:00 to 06:00 as night hours (Article 106) and adds at least 30% for them (Article 98). That covers seven of the nine hours in the 8 pm row. We agree the shift before the offer, which is how our placements get 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.

WordPress Developer Skills to Screen For

The core skill areas to screen for when hiring WordPress Developers in Vietnam

WordPress 7.1 shipped on 19 August 2026, and its release post says the post editor is now fully iframed for all themes, matching the Site Editor. Block code written for the old editor is the first thing to test.

Blocks in the iframed editor

The Plugin Check tool now checks that blocks declare apiVersion 3 or higher, for iframe editor compatibility in WordPress 7.0 and later. Ask the candidate which of their blocks broke in the iframe, and what they changed in block.json and the editor styles.

PHP 8.2 end of support

PHP 8.2 security support ends on 31 December 2026, per php.net, and PHP 8.3 follows a year later. WordPress's requirements page recommends PHP 8.3 or greater and warns that PHP 7.4 has reached end of life. On the WordPress.org stats, 24.8% of sites report PHP 8.2 and 17.0% still report 7.4.

Ask how the candidate would test a store's plugins against PHP 8.4 before the host switches, and which errors they would expect first.

WooCommerce order storage

WooCommerce enabled High-Performance Order Storage by default for new installations from version 8.2, released in October 2023, moving orders out of the posts and postmeta tables. Hand the candidate a small extension that reads order data with get_post_meta() and ask for the HPOS-compatible version.

Access control and patch windows

Patchstack's 2026 report counted 11,334 new WordPress vulnerabilities in 2025, 42% more than in 2024, with 91% of them in plugins. Broken Access Control was the most exploited type, and 46% of flaws had no fix from the developer at public disclosure.

WordPress's nonces documentation says nonces should never be relied on for authorization and points to current_user_can(). Show the candidate an AJAX handler that checks a nonce and nothing else, and score whether they add the capability check. Then ask for their rule on a plugin with a public flaw and no patch.

Consent on forms and checkouts

Vietnam's Law on Personal Data Protection, in force since 1 January 2026, requires consent for each purpose and says silence or non-response is not consent (Article 9). Decree 356/2025/ND-CP bars default consent mechanisms and puts the burden of proving consent on the controller (Article 6).

For a store with shoppers in Vietnam, ask the candidate to add a newsletter opt-in that starts unticked to a WooCommerce checkout, separate from the order itself. The build should store the time and wording of each consent where your team can export it.

Contractor or Employer of Record in Vietnam

Software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire" under 17 U.S.C. § 101, and a transfer must be in writing and signed under § 204(a). Name themes, plugins, blocks and WooCommerce extensions in the assignment.

Decide early which of those stay private. The plugin directory guidelines require everything hosted on WordPress.org to comply with the GPL or a GPL-compatible licence.

Vietnam's Law on Intellectual Property protects computer programs like literary works (Article 22). A party that contracts an author to create a work holds the economic rights unless the contract says otherwise (Article 39). The author keeps the moral rights to be named and to the work's integrity, which cannot be assigned (Article 45), and an assignment contract must be in writing (Article 46).

IRS Publication 515 says the place where services are performed determines the source of the income, so a developer working in Da Nang earns foreign-source income. A foreign individual gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status.

Article 13 of the Labor Code treats an agreement covering a paid job, wages and one party's management and supervision as a labor contract, whatever its name. A one-off theme build can sit with a contractor. A developer who works your support queue on hours you set fits Article 13.

An employee who completes 12 months gets 12 working days of paid annual leave in normal conditions (Article 113), on top of public holidays. Our Employer of Record service employs the developer in Vietnam, and our Vietnam EOR page covers the local detail. This is a summary, not legal advice.

Independent contractor Employer of Record
Legal employer None; the developer invoices you The EOR's Vietnam entity
US paperwork Form W-8BEN from the developer Service agreement with the EOR
IP Written assignment of themes, plugins and extensions (Articles 39 and 46; § 204(a)) Employer holds the economic rights (Article 39), passed on through your EOR agreement
Local labor law Article 13 labor contract finding if you run their queue and set hours Annual leave, night pay and public holidays apply
Pay currency Agreed in the contract, often USD Vietnamese dong, as Article 95 requires for Vietnamese employees

English Level and Working Norms in Vietnam

Reading is Vietnam's strongest skill on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, at 522 against 470 for listening, and Da Nang scores 509. The national score is 500, 64th of 123 countries and regions and 12 points above the global average of 488, with IT at 500, per EF's Vietnam page.

WordPress work leans on reading: plugin changelogs, security advisories and support threads. Run one step of the assessment as a written change note for a non-technical editor, and one as a short unscripted call.

Vietnamese is the site language on 1.16% of WordPress installs that report to WordPress.org, ahead of Indonesian. For bilingual sites, the Vietnamese translation project shows WordPress 7.1.x at 94% translated, and a developer from Vietnam can check the admin and front end in both languages before launch.

Article 112 of the Labor Code gives five paid days for Lunar New Year, with dates set each year by the Prime Minister. Agree store cover for that week before the government sets them.

Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026 is a working day in Vietnam, so a developer there can watch your store through the Black Friday build-up while your US team is off.

WordPress Developer Hiring Process in Vietnam

The stages of a WordPress Developers in Vietnam hiring process

Second Talent's vetting covers stages 2 to 5 before you see a profile.

Stage 1: Define what the hire owns You say whether the job is a care plan across many sites, a WooCommerce store or plugin engineering, and list the page builder, PHP version and host. Note whether any shoppers are in Vietnam, and pick a shift from the table above.

Stage 2: Application review We look for sites the candidate still maintains and code they can show: a plugin repository, a block library or a speed fix with before-and-after numbers. A portfolio of finished page-builder sites does not pass alone.

Stage 3: Skills assessment The candidate fixes a block that breaks in the iframed editor, makes an order-reading extension HPOS-compatible and adds a capability check to an AJAX handler. They write a change note an editor could follow.

Stage 4: Live technical interview with a senior engineer A senior engineer reviews the fixes in English, then sets a scenario: a vendor discloses a plugin flaw with no patch at 8:00 am Ho Chi Minh City time, on a store running a US sale.

Stage 5: Background and reference checks We ask former clients and managers how the candidate handled updates, backups and admin access, and whether they stayed through long maintenance contracts. You then choose the contractor or EOR route above.

Guide to Hiring Developers in Vietnam

Everything you need to know about employment laws, payroll, and compliance when hiring developers in Vietnam.

Vietnam is the market clients pick when they want engineering depth at a mid-range price and expect the hire to still be there in three years. Here is what the market looks like going into 2026.

530k+

Estimated IT professionals, against demand nearer 750,000

Demand runs ahead of supply

Published estimates put the IT workforce at roughly 530,000 to 600,000 people, with 55,000 to 60,000 new technology graduates a year, against projected demand closer to 750,000. That gap is why counteroffers happen and why the engineers worth hiring are rarely on the market long. It also explains Vietnam's retention advantage: people who join a good team tend to stay.

English is good on the page, mixed on the call

Vietnam scored 500 in the 2025 EF English Proficiency Index, 64th of 123 countries and inside the moderate band. In practice written English is reliable for tickets, documentation and pull requests, while spoken fluency varies more than the score suggests. Run one unscripted conversation in the process and decide honestly whether the role needs it.

Where the engineers are

Ho Chi Minh City is the largest and most mature pool and prices accordingly. Hanoi runs slightly cheaper with strong backend and enterprise experience. Da Nang has become the deliberate choice for teams balancing cost against capability, and generally lands 15 to 25 percent below Ho Chi Minh City.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost to hire a WordPress developer in Vietnam in 2026?
Our 2026 Vietnam rates run $800-$1,400/month for junior developers with 1-3 years, $1,400-$2,400 for mid-level, $2,400-$4,200 for senior, and $4,200-$6,000 for leads. A comparable senior WordPress hire in the United States costs $7,000-$11,000 a month all in. Commerce experience and fluent spoken English are the two factors that push a candidate to the top of a band.
What are the employer costs of hiring in Vietnam?
Employer statutory contributions are 23.5% of gross salary: social insurance at 17.5%, health insurance at 3%, unemployment insurance at 1% and the trade union fee at 2%. The important detail is the cap. Social insurance, health insurance and the union fee all stop at 20 times the base salary, which is VND 46.8 million a month, so the effective employer uplift falls to roughly 14.2% at a VND 80 million salary. Budget senior hires from the effective rate, not the headline one.
Where in Vietnam should I hire WordPress developers?
Ho Chi Minh City has the deepest pool, the strongest English and the highest rates, and is the best choice for commerce and product work. Hanoi runs 5-10% cheaper with strong backend fundamentals. Da Nang is 15-25% below Ho Chi Minh City with excellent agency delivery experience and lower attrition. Remote hiring has flattened the map, so widening the location filter is usually a better move than lowering the seniority bar.
How good is English among Vietnamese WordPress developers?
Written English is generally good and works well for ticket-based and async collaboration. Spoken English is more variable than in the Philippines. Our advice is to run one interview stage as an unscripted conversation rather than a prepared presentation, and to decide honestly whether the role needs daily client-facing calls. Many WordPress roles do not, and screening for spoken fluency you do not need narrows the pool for no return.
How do you vet WordPress developers in Vietnam?
Every engineer goes through a recruiter screen, a 60-minute live WordPress exercise in a real install, an architecture interview covering data modelling and plugin trade-offs, a practical code review round, and two reference calls that include a dual employment check. We test block editor work directly, because Vietnam's agency heritage produces deep classic theme experience that can mask thin block experience.
Do I need a Vietnamese entity to hire?
No. Our Employer of Record service makes us the legal employer in Vietnam. We run compliant payroll in VND, register social and health insurance, file taxes and issue proper contracts with correct notice terms, which are 30 days on a fixed-term contract and 45 days on an indefinite one. You direct the work with no subsidiary and no incorporation timeline.
