Australian teams get the closest time-zone alignment of any offshore destination.
TL;DR: Senior Web3 developers from Asia cost $3,500-$8,000 a month through Second Talent, matched in 24 hours. The closest US benchmark, the BLS median for software developers, was $135,980 a year in May 2025.
The $1.5 billion stolen from Bybit on 21 February 2025 did not start with a smart contract bug. Attackers modified the JavaScript that Safe{Wallet}'s web interface served from AWS S3, and the injected code manipulated the multisig transaction Bybit's signers approved. A Web3 developer owns that layer: the page, the wallet connection and the signature request.
Key takeaways
We publish no rate card for the Web3 title, so the table uses our blockchain developer rate cards. Vietnam and Thailand share the highest ceiling after Malaysia, at $8,500 a month, while the Philippine range stops at $6,500. Each figure is what developers in that market earn working directly for foreign companies, before any employer or platform costs.
| Market | Monthly pay working for international clients (USD) |
|---|---|
| Indonesia | $2,000-$8,000 |
| Philippines | $2,200-$6,500 |
| Vietnam | $2,200-$8,500 |
| Thailand | $2,500-$8,500 |
| Malaysia | $3,500-$9,000 |

Monthly ranges from the Remote (Working for International Clients) figures on our rate cards for Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, converted at ExchangeRate-API mid-market rates for 14 September 2026.
All five cards publish US dollar ranges with a fixed top, so the conversion leaves them unchanged. Singapore and Hong Kong sit in a higher band: our blockchain cards for those markets start at $11,840 and $15,940 a month.
Through Second Talent, senior Web3 developers cost $3,500-$8,000 a month: one monthly fee that bundles salary, payroll taxes, statutory contributions and our service fee. Our pricing page sets out how the subscription works.
BLS has no Web3 or blockchain occupation. The role maps to Software Developers (15-1252), because a Web3 developer designs and builds software, from contracts to the front end and indexers that read them.
| BLS OEWS, May 2025, national | Software Developers (15-1252) |
|---|---|
| Median annual | $135,980 |
| 10th percentile, monthly | $6,870 |
| 25th percentile, monthly | $8,770 |
| Median, monthly | $11,330 |
| 75th percentile, monthly | $14,330 |
| 90th percentile, monthly | $17,890 |
Monthly figures are the annual wages on the OEWS profile for 15-1252 divided by 12, rounded to the nearest $10. The occupation-wide figure does not isolate Web3 specialists.
Salary is only part of the US cost. In the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, wages and salaries made up 68.5% of employer compensation costs for full-time private industry workers, and benefits the other 31.5%.
Sygnia found that the attackers restored the tampered Safe{Wallet} files about two minutes after the Bybit transaction executed. On-chain incidents move faster than a US on-call engineer can wake up. Web3 teams use Asia for coverage as much as for overlap. US daylight time runs from 8 March to 1 November 2026, per NIST, and the Asian cities below keep one offset all year.
| Engineer's city | UTC offset | 9:00 am ET (EDT) | 9:00 am CT (CDT) | 9:00 am PT (PDT) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manila, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei | UTC+8 | 9:00 pm | 10:00 pm | 12:00 midnight |
| Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Bangkok | UTC+7 | 8:00 pm | 9:00 pm | 11:00 pm |
| Bengaluru | UTC+5:30 | 6:30 pm | 7:30 pm | 9:30 pm |
After 1 November 2026, every time in the table moves one hour later.
Two schedules, computed for September:
Arithmetic for the first line: 9:00 am in Kuala Lumpur is 01:00 UTC, and 01:00 UTC minus four hours is 9:00 pm EDT the previous evening.
The Ho Chi Minh City shift has a cost for employees: Vietnam's Labor Code adds at least 30% for work between 22:00 and 06:00 (Articles 98 and 106), three hours of that shift. In Manila, the Labor Code sets at least 10% between 10 pm and 6 am (Article 86).
We agree the schedule before the offer, which is how our placements get 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.

Sygnia's Bybit investigation concluded that with access to front-end resources, the attackers could manipulate multisig transactions and mask the Safe{Wallet} user interface. Contract languages lead most Web3 CVs, but that finding is why the six skills below matter as much as Solidity, Rust or Move.
EIP-712 sets a standard for hashing and signing typed structured data, not only bytestrings. Its stated aim is data that can be displayed to the user for verification when signing, in place of an opaque hex string. Ask the candidate to build a typed-data permit signature. Then ask what a hardware wallet shows for it, and what a blind-signed hash would hide.
Sygnia's write-up of the 8 September 2025 npm compromise says the code hooked fetch(), XMLHttpRequest and window.ethereum, swapping wallet addresses for look-alikes.
In December 2023, Ledger's incident report described a malicious Ledger Connect Kit pushed to npm from a former employee's account. DApps loaded it at runtime from a CDN. Ask the candidate how they pin wallet libraries, and whether any script in your dApp loads code that is not in the lockfile.
Electric Capital's developer report archive summarises its 2024 report: 1 in 3 crypto developers work on multiple chains. For Solana, Anchor is the leading framework for building Solana programs. Test the chain you run in depth, and ask how the candidate's account model assumptions change between EVM storage and Solana accounts. We staff Solidity, Rust and Move specialists as separate tracks.
The viem documentation describes viem as a TypeScript interface for Ethereum and an alternative to ethers.js and web3.js. Its authors also wrote wagmi, the React Hooks library. ERC-4337 delivers account abstraction without consensus-layer changes: users send UserOperation objects to a separate mempool, and bundlers package them into transactions. Ask the candidate to sponsor gas for a first-time user and explain who pays when a bundler's transaction reverts.
Ethereum.org's proof-of-stake docs divide time into 12-second slots and 32-slot epochs. A transaction is final once its block sits in a chain with a supermajority link between two checkpoints.
A back end that credits a deposit on the first confirmation can credit funds that a reorganization later removes. Ask the candidate which block tag their indexer waits for, and how they would replay events after a reorganization.
The GENIUS Act, signed on 18 July 2025, requires payment stablecoin issuers to hold 100% reserve backing and to have the technical capability to seize, freeze or burn tokens when required by law.
Your checkout has to handle a transfer that fails because an address was frozen. Ask the candidate to design the payment state machine for a USDC invoice, including refunds and blocked addresses.
In an indictment unsealed in June 2025, the Justice Department says two North Koreans used stolen and fraudulent identity documents to get hired by an Atlanta blockchain research company and a Serbian virtual token company. One stole virtual currency worth about $740,000 by modifying the source code of two of his employer's smart contracts.
The defendants worked as a co-located team in the United Arab Emirates. Whatever contract you sign, verify the person first, and grant deploy keys last.
Software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire" under 17 U.S.C. § 101. Contracts, deploy scripts and dApp front ends a contractor writes stay theirs until transferred, and a transfer must be in writing and signed under § 204(a).
IRS Publication 515 says the place where services are performed determines the source of the income, and a foreign individual gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status. If you pay in tokens, the IRS digital assets page says digital assets are property, not currency, for US tax purposes.
The developer's country applies its own employment test. Philippine courts use the four-fold test, and in Atok Big Wedge v. Gison the Supreme Court called control the most important of the four. Article 13 of Vietnam's 2019 Labor Code treats an agreement under another name as a labor contract when it covers a paid job, wages and management or supervision.
| Independent contractor | Employer of Record | |
|---|---|---|
| Legal employer | None; the developer invoices you | The EOR's local entity |
| US paperwork | Form W-8BEN from the developer | Service agreement with the EOR |
| IP | Written assignment covering contracts, scripts and front-end code | Assignment in the employment contract and your EOR agreement |
| Local labor law | Classification risk if the work looks like employment | Night premiums, public holidays and leave apply |
| Pay currency | Agreed in the contract; the IRS treats digital assets as property | Local currency; Vietnam's Labor Code states wages in dong (Article 95) |
A fixed-scope dApp build suits a contractor agreement. A developer with a seat on your multisig and access to production keys fits the employment tests above, and our Employer of Record service employs that developer in-country. Our Vietnam EOR page lists the employer contributions. This is a summary, not legal advice.
Web3 developers write in public: governance proposals, audit responses, release notes and answers in a protocol's Discord. The five markets in the cost table span 179 points on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, from Malaysia at 581 to Thailand at 402. The index ranks 123 countries and regions, with a global average of 488.
| Country | EF EPI 2025 score | World rank (of 123) | IT job-function score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Malaysia | 581 | 24 | 590 |
| Philippines | 569 | 28 | 581 |
| Vietnam | 500 | 64 | 500 |
| Indonesia | 471 | 80 | 523 |
| Thailand | 402 | 116 | 459 |
Scores come from EF's country pages, such as Malaysia and Vietnam.
Ask finalists to write the incident notice your users would read after a paused contract, in plain English with no jargon. It tests the writing a US team relies on when the developer is the only one awake.
Chains keep running on public holidays. Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026 is a working day in Asia, so a developer there can watch contracts while your US team is off. Vietnam's Labor Code gives five paid days for Lunar New Year (Article 112), so name a US engineer for incident response that week.

Second Talent's vetting covers stages 2 to 5 before you see a profile. For contract-only work, our blockchain developer page covers the narrower role.
Stage 1: Define what the hire owns Write down the chains, the wallet stack, the contracts and indexers in scope, and whether the developer will hold deploy keys or a multisig seat. A dApp front-end developer and a protocol engineer need different tests.
Stage 2: Application review We look for shipped dApps and verified contracts the candidate can name their part in, with public repositories that include tests. We ask what broke after launch and who fixed it.
Stage 3: Skills assessment The candidate builds a small dApp flow: connect a wallet with viem or wagmi, request an EIP-712 signature and index the resulting event. We plant an unpinned wallet dependency and a deposit credited before finality, and score what they catch.
Stage 4: Live technical interview with a senior engineer A senior engineer reviews the assessment, then walks through the Bybit front-end attack and asks how the candidate would let a signer verify a transaction without trusting the page.
Stage 5: Background and reference checks We ask former managers about key handling, incident response and access removal when the developer left. Confirm identity again at onboarding, sign with the IP assignment in place, and grant on-chain roles last.
We shortlist 6-8 candidates within 24 hours from 100,000+ pre-vetted engineers, accepting only the top 1% of applicants. Web3 developers cost $3,500-$8,000 a month, with $0 upfront, no lock-in and 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours. We handle contracts, payroll and equipment, with compliant EOR contracts and payroll in 9 Asian markets.
Our pricing page covers subscription, direct-hire and EOR pricing. Open Campus, the Web3 education protocol, hired 10 engineers in Vietnam within 2 months through us, across front-end, back-end and QA roles, and the Open Campus case study reports a 70% increase in productivity.
