TL;DR: n8n automation developers from Asia start from $2,999 a month through Second Talent, matched in 24 hours. The closest US benchmark, the BLS median for software developers, was $135,980 a year in May 2025.
On 11 March 2026, CISA added CVE-2025-68613 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. The n8n flaw lets a user who can edit workflows run code with the privileges of the n8n process. Your n8n developer holds the credentials for the systems your workflows touch, so ask which version they run before anything else.
Key takeaways
- n8n ships under the Sustainable Use License, which limits use to internal business purposes or non-commercial use, so a product that resells n8n needs a separate license.
- n8n 2.0 runs Code node executions on task runners and blocks environment variable access from the Code node by default.
- On our Node.js developer rate cards, pay for work with international clients starts at $1,200 a month in Indonesia.
- n8n's cloud plans charge by monthly workflow executions, starting with 2,500 on the Starter plan.
What n8n Automation Developers Earn Working for International Clients in Asia
India shows the widest spread in the table, from $1,880 to $7,530+ a month. We publish no n8n rate card, so the table uses our Node.js developer rate cards, the closest match: each n8n worker runs as its own Node.js instance, and custom nodes ship as npm packages.
The figure is what developers in each market earn working directly for foreign companies, before any employer or platform costs.
| Market |
Monthly pay working for international clients (USD) |
| Indonesia |
$1,200-$4,500 |
| Philippines |
$1,520-$4,070+ |
| India |
$1,880-$7,530+ |
| Vietnam |
$2,000-$5,500 |
| Malaysia |
$2,200-$6,500 |

Monthly ranges from the Remote (Working for International Clients) figures on our rate cards for Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Vietnam and Malaysia, converted at ExchangeRate-API mid-market rates for 14 September 2026.
The Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia cards publish the figure in US dollars with a fixed ceiling. The Philippine and Indian cards quote pesos and rupees with an open top, which is why only those two rows carry a plus sign.
Through Second Talent, n8n automation developers start from $2,999 a month: one monthly fee that bundles salary, payroll taxes, statutory contributions and our service fee. Our pricing page shows how the subscription works.
US Pay Benchmark for n8n Automation Developers
BLS has no automation developer occupation. The role maps to Software Developers (SOC 15-1252), because an n8n developer builds and maintains production software: API integrations, webhook endpoints, JavaScript in Code nodes and, at the senior end, custom nodes.

Monthly figures are the annual wages on the OEWS profile for 15-1252 divided by 12, rounded to the nearest $10.
Salary is only part of the US cost. In the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, wages and salaries made up 68.5% of employer compensation costs for full-time private industry workers, and benefits the other 31.5%.
Much n8n work starts as a project, so compare contract rates too. Our automation engineer cost-to-hire page puts a mid-level US freelance or contract automation engineer at $85 to $135 an hour, before payroll, insurance and leave.
Time Zone Overlap with ET, CT and PT
A workflow scheduled for 2:00 am Eastern fires while your New York office sleeps, and a failed sync costs less to fix before the US day starts. Asian cities hold one offset all year, and US daylight time runs from 8 March to 1 November 2026, per NIST.

After 1 November 2026, every time in the table moves one hour later.
A worked example: a Bengaluru developer on a 1:30 pm to 10:30 pm shift works 08:00 to 17:00 UTC, which is 4:00 am to 1:00 pm EDT. That covers four hours of a New York day, three of a Chicago day and one of a San Francisco day.
Two jobs fit the two halves of that shift. Before the US team logs on, the developer clears the overnight error queue and reruns failed executions.
During the shared hours, they sit with the operations or finance owner of each workflow and agree changes. We set the schedule before the offer, which is how our placements get 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.
Night hours cost more for employees in two markets: at least 10% extra between 10 pm and 6 am in the Philippines (Labor Code Article 86), and at least 30% between 22:00 and 06:00 in Vietnam (Labor Code Articles 98 and 106).
n8n Automation Developer Skills to Screen For

n8n announced a $180 million Series C at a $2.5 billion valuation on 9 October 2025, and its funding post reported 6x user growth over the previous year. The five checks below test whether a candidate can own n8n in production once your company depends on it.
Patch levels and exposed webhooks
The GitHub advisory for CVE-2025-68613 covers versions from 0.211.0 up to the fixes in 1.120.4, 1.121.1 and 1.122.0. A second advisory, CVE-2026-21858, let an unauthenticated attacker read server files through certain form-based workflows, from version 1.65.0 until the fix in 1.121.0. The CISA catalog entry gave federal agencies until 25 March 2026 to act on the first. Ask the candidate how they would find unpatched instances and which of your forms and webhooks face the internet.
The n8n 2.0 security defaults
n8n released version 2.0 as a beta on 8 December 2025, and its breaking changes list shows N8N_BLOCK_ENV_ACCESS_IN_NODE now defaulting to true. Version 2.0 also disables the ExecuteCommand and LocalFileTrigger nodes, drops MySQL and MariaDB as storage backends in favor of PostgreSQL, and replaces the activate toggle with Publish and Unpublish. Ask for a 1.x workflow the candidate migrated and what broke.
Queue mode and scaling
In queue mode, the main instance handles timers and webhook calls and passes each execution ID to Redis, and worker instances pick the jobs up.
A multi-main setup needs all main processes connected to Postgres and Redis and running the same n8n version. Give the candidate a webhook that receives bursts of traffic and ask how they would size workers and where executions would queue.
Custom nodes that pass review
n8n's community node standards require a package name starting with n8n-nodes- and the n8n-community-node-package keyword. From 1 May 2026, n8n accepts nodes for verification only when the developer publishes them through GitHub Actions with a provenance statement. Ask for a node the candidate built for an internal API, then review its credential handling with them.
License and execution budgets
The Sustainable Use License FAQ blocks white-labeling n8n and charging customers for access to it. On the pricing page, cloud plans bill by monthly workflow executions, and Git version control and separate environments start at the Business plan. A candidate should tell you which edition your use case needs and how many executions a month your workflows will burn.
AI agent workflows in n8n
Many n8n briefs now include an LLM step or a full agent, and n8n builds agents from its AI Agent node. It is a root node, built on LangChain, that takes sub-nodes for the chat model, memory and tools. n8n also ships an MCP Client Tool node, so an agent can call tools on an external MCP server, and an MCP Server Trigger node that exposes a workflow's tools to outside agents. Each tool you attach is a permission the model can use without asking.
Screen the candidate on an agent that touches money or customer records. Ask which tools they would give it, which actions would pause for human approval before anything is sent, and how they cap the number of iterations. Then ask how they test it: a fixed set of sample inputs run after each prompt change, with outputs compared before the workflow goes live. A candidate who has run one in production can say what the agent cost per execution in model tokens, and how they caught a hallucinated field before it reached your CRM. For custom nodes behind those tools, our Node.js interview questions cover the runtime they run on.
Contractor or Employer of Record for a US Company
Software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire" under 17 U.S.C. § 101, and a transfer must be in writing and signed under § 204(a). List workflow JSON exports, custom node packages and Code node scripts in the assignment, and keep credentials in your own n8n instance so you can revoke them in one place.
IRS Publication 515 says the place where services are performed determines the source of the income. A developer working from Bengaluru or Manila earns foreign-source income and gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status.
Local law then applies its own employment test. Philippine courts use the four-fold test, and in Atok Big Wedge v. Gison the Supreme Court called the power of control the most important of the four. In Vietnam, Article 13 of the 2019 Labor Code treats an agreement as a labor contract when it covers a paid job, wages and one party's management and supervision, whatever its name.
A fixed build of ten workflows suits a contractor agreement. A developer who owns your automation platform, answers failed-run alerts and works your hours fits the tests above, and our Employer of Record service employs that developer in-country. The EOR, PEO and contractor comparison lays out the trade-offs. This is a summary, not legal advice.

English Level and Working Norms
An n8n developer spends much of the week with non-engineers: the finance lead whose invoice sync broke, the sales manager who wants a new CRM trigger. Malaysia scores 590 and the Philippines 581 among IT workers on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, which ranks 123 countries and regions against a global average of 488.

Holiday cover works in your favour. Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026 is a working day in Asia, so a developer there can watch Black Friday order and payment workflows while your US team is off. Article 112 of Vietnam's Labor Code gives five paid days for Lunar New Year, so name a backup owner for critical workflows that week.
n8n Automation Developer Hiring Process

Second Talent's vetting covers stages 2 to 5 before you see a profile.
Stage 1: Define what the hire owns
You list the workflows in scope, the systems they connect, the edition (cloud or self-hosted) and the current n8n version. Say whether the role includes custom nodes, infrastructure or on-call for failed runs.
Stage 2: Application review
We look for workflows running in production, with volumes, error handling and the systems connected. Template imports with no error branch, retry logic or credential separation do not pass.
Stage 3: Skills assessment
The candidate builds a workflow that takes a webhook, calls two APIs and an LLM step, retries on failure and routes errors to a separate error workflow. We score the export file, the credential setup and how the build handles a malformed payload.
Stage 4: Live technical interview with a senior engineer
A senior engineer reviews the workflow with the candidate and asks for a custom node design against a private API. The interview also covers queue mode sizing and the upgrade path from 1.x to 2.0.
Stage 5: Background and reference checks
We ask former managers how the candidate handled production credentials, how often their workflows paged the team and what they documented before leaving. You then choose the contractor or EOR route above.
