What Software Architects Earn Working for International Clients in Asia

No rate card of ours covers software architects by that title. The closest is our cloud engineer rate card, which matches the distributed systems and cloud work in the role, and the table below uses it. India's card has the highest printed ceiling of the five, $8,470, with room above it.

Monthly ranges from the Remote (Working for International Clients) figures on our rate cards for the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, India and Malaysia, converted at ExchangeRate-API mid-market rates for 14 September 2026. The Indonesian and Vietnamese cards publish US dollars; the other three are set in pesos, rupees and ringgit.

Each range is what cloud engineers in that market earn working directly for foreign companies, before any employer or platform costs. No card measures architect pay by title, so treat the table as the market for the nearest engineering role.

US Pay Benchmark for Software Architects

ONET lists "Software Architect" among the reported job titles for Software Developers (15-1252), so Software Developers is the BLS benchmark. Solutions and systems architects fall under a separate ONET code, Computer Systems Engineers/Architects (15-1299.08).

Monthly figures are the annual wages on the BLS occupation profile for 15-1252 divided by 12, rounded to the nearest $10. The annual median is $135,980.

Salary is only part of the US cost. In the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, wages and salaries made up 68.5% of employer compensation costs for full-time private industry workers, and benefits the other 31.5%.

Time Zone Overlap with ET, CT and PT

An architect's hours with your team go to decisions: design reviews, incident retrospectives and trade-off calls with product leads. Code review and diagram updates can run while the US sleeps.

After 1 November 2026, every time in the table moves one hour later. US daylight time runs from 8 March to 1 November 2026 (NIST); the Asian cities in the table do not change their clocks.

Two shifts that put a US morning inside the architect's day, computed for September:

• Bengaluru, 1:30 pm to 10:30 pm is 08:00 to 17:00 UTC, or 4:00 am to 1:00 pm EDT. Against a 9-to-5 day that is four hours with New York, three with Chicago and one with San Francisco.
• Manila, 4:00 pm to 1:00 am covers the same UTC hours and the same overlap. For an employee, the three hours after 10 pm carry the night shift differential of at least 10% under Article 86 of the Philippine Labor Code.

A West Coast team gets one hour from either shift. A weekly architecture review at 9:00 am Pacific means 12:00 midnight in Manila, so agree it with the architect before the offer.

Vietnam adds at least 30% for employee hours between 22:00 and 06:00 (Labor Code 2019, Articles 98 and 106). Second Talent's placements offer 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.

Software Architect Skills to Screen For

Stack Overflow's 2025 developer survey counted 6.1% of respondents as software or solutions architects, against 27% full-stack developers. With a pool that small, test judgment on your own systems rather than recall of patterns.

Failure domains and regional dependencies

AWS's post-event summary for 19 and 20 October 2025 traces the outage to "a latent defect within the service's automated DNS management system" and runs from 11:48 pm PDT to 2:20 pm PDT the next day. EC2 launches, Network Load Balancers and Lambda all took knock-on damage.

Ask the candidate to map one of your services' dependencies on a single Region and price the fallback.

Service boundaries and "monolith first"

In his 2015 MonolithFirst note, Martin Fowler wrote that "almost all the successful microservice stories have started with a monolith that got too big and was broken up". Give the candidate your current system and ask which piece they would split out first, which they would leave alone, and what data each split has to move.

Designing for a team split across time zones

Melvin Conway's 1968 Datamation paper argues that organizations "are constrained to produce designs which are copies of the communication structures of these organizations". Put an architect in Asia with a product team in the US and the effect shows up at the service boundary. Ask where the candidate would draw ownership lines so each side ships without waiting on the other's day.

Written decisions

Michael Nygard's 2011 post set out the architecture decision record: title, context, decision, status and consequences, one or two pages long. Ask for a redacted ADR from the candidate's past work and check whether the consequences section lists the costs as well as the benefits.

Trade-offs across the six pillars

The AWS Well-Architected Framework names six pillars: operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency, cost optimization and sustainability. Pick two that pull against each other in your stack, such as multi-Region reliability and cost, and ask the candidate to argue for a position with numbers.

Guardrails for AI-written code

Stack Overflow's 2025 AI results found that 3.1% of developers highly trust AI output, and 66% named "AI solutions that are almost right, but not quite" as a frustration. The architect sets the review rules, module boundaries and tests that catch those near misses. Ask which checks the candidate would add to a pipeline that merges AI-assisted pull requests.

Clean architecture inside each service

Searches for clean architecture developers come from teams whose problem sits inside one codebase rather than between services. Robert C. Martin's Clean Architecture post states the dependency rule: source code dependencies can only point inwards, so business rules never import the web framework, the ORM or the message broker. The test is practical. A use case should run in a unit test with no database, and swapping the payment provider should touch one adapter.

Give the candidate a module from your codebase where a controller calls the database directly and holds pricing logic. Ask where they would draw the first boundary, which interface they would put in front of the database, and what they would leave alone because another layer would cost more than it saves. Strong architects explain the cost of extra layers as readily as the benefit, and they know when a CRUD screen does not need them. Contractor or Employer of Record for a US Company

An architect produces documents as well as code: diagrams, decision records, reference implementations. Under 17 U.S.C. § 101, software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire", and § 204(a) makes a copyright transfer valid only in writing and signed. Name the design documents in the assignment alongside the code.

IRS Publication 515 says the place where services are performed determines the source of the income. An architect working from Bengaluru earns foreign-source income, and gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status.

Local law can reclassify the arrangement. Article 13 of Vietnam's 2019 Labor Code treats an agreement under another name as a labor contract when it covers a paid job, wages and one party's management and supervision. An architect who reports to your CTO and attends your planning meetings fits that description.

English Level and Working Norms

Malaysia's IT workers score 590 on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, the highest IT job-function score among the five markets. An architect's designs reach your US team as documents and presentations, so English carries more weight here than in a coding role.

Scores come from EF's country pages for Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, India and Indonesia. The global average is 488.

Test the English that matters for the role: ask finalists to present a design to a non-technical product lead in ten minutes, then answer written follow-up questions overnight.

Holidays run on two calendars. Thanksgiving, 26 November 2026, is a working day in Asia, so decide in advance whether a planned change goes ahead that day and who in the US is on call.

Vietnam's Labor Code gives five paid days for Lunar New Year (Article 112), which rules that week out for a cutover with a Vietnam-based team.

Stage 1: Define what the hire owns Write down the decisions the architect will make alone, the ones they recommend, and who signs off. Name the systems in scope and the next major change, such as a Region expansion or a monolith split.

Stage 5: Background and reference checks Ask former engineering leads whether the candidate's designs survived contact with the team that built them, and how they responded when a team overruled them. Sign the contract with the IP assignment covering documents and code.
