TL;DR: AI agent developers from Asia start at $3,500 a month through Second Talent, matched in 24 hours. The closest US benchmark, the BLS median for software developers, was $135,980 a year in May 2025.
Only 14.1% of developers used AI agents at work daily in Stack Overflow's 2025 Developer Survey, and another 13.8% used AI only in copilot or autocomplete mode. The engineer who has run an agent in production, and can explain the run that went wrong, comes from that small group.
Key takeaways
- Our AI engineer rate cards stand in for agent developers, and the Philippines has the lowest floor among them, near $2,390 a month.
- Anthropic separates workflows, which follow predefined code paths, from agents, where the model directs its own tool use.
- OWASP traces excessive agency to three root causes: excessive functionality, permissions and autonomy.
- 81% of Stack Overflow respondents asked about AI agents have concerns about the security and privacy of data.
What AI Agent Developers Earn Working for International Clients in Asia
Our AI agent developer rate card quotes global tech hubs, from San Francisco to Singapore, with no foreign-client range by market, so the table uses our AI engineer rate cards, the closest match. India shows the widest spread, from $2,610 to $10,150 a month. The figures are what engineers in each market earn working directly for foreign companies, before any employer or platform costs.

US Pay Benchmark for AI Agent Developers
BLS publishes no agent developer occupation. The role maps to Software Developers (SOC 15-1252), because an agent developer writes and operates production software whose control flow runs through model calls and tools.

Monthly figures are the annual wages on the OEWS profile for 15-1252 divided by 12, rounded to the nearest $10.
Salary is only part of the US cost. In the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, wages and salaries made up 68.5% of employer compensation costs for full-time private industry workers, and benefits the other 31.5%.
For the contract route, our AI agent developer cost-to-hire page puts a mid-level US freelance or contract agent developer at $119 to $185 an hour, before payroll, insurance and leave.
Time Zone Overlap with ET, CT and PT
An agent that waits for human approval stalls while its approver sleeps. The overlap window decides how fast high-impact actions clear. Asian cities keep one offset all year, and US daylight time runs from 8 March to 1 November 2026, per NIST.

After 1 November 2026, every time in the table moves one hour later.
A worked example: a Jakarta shift from 3:00 pm to midnight runs 08:00 to 17:00 UTC. That is 4:00 am to 1:00 pm EDT, four hours inside a New York day, three with Chicago and one with San Francisco.
Split the work along that line. Long agent runs, eval sweeps and batch jobs go overnight US time. The shared hours cover approvals, failed-run reviews and changes to tool permissions. We agree that schedule before the offer, which is how our placements get 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.
Evening hours cost more for employees in two markets: at least 10% extra between 10 pm and 6 am in the Philippines (Labor Code Article 86), and at least 30% between 22:00 and 06:00 in Vietnam (Labor Code Articles 98 and 106).
AI Agent Developer Skills to Screen For

Among Stack Overflow respondents asked about AI agents, 87% voiced concern about the accuracy of the information agents provide. A strong agent developer designs for that doubt: narrow tools, human checkpoints and traces you can read.
Workflow or agent: the first design call
Anthropic's Building effective agents defines workflows as systems where LLMs and tools follow predefined code paths, and agents as systems where the model directs its own process and tool use. Its advice is to find the simplest solution and add complexity only when needed. Ask the candidate for a project where they replaced an agent with a fixed workflow, and why.
Tool design and MCP servers
By the day Anthropic donated the Model Context Protocol to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation, on 9 December 2025, it counted more than 10,000 active public MCP servers.
Among agent developers in Stack Overflow's survey, 42.8% used the GitHub MCP Server for agent memory or data management. Have the candidate write a tool definition for one of your internal APIs and review its input schema together.
Permissions and human approval
The OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications 2025 lists Excessive Agency as LLM06. Its mitigations include minimum privileges for each action and human approval before high-impact actions. Show the candidate an agent that can read a repository and ask which scopes they would remove.
Sandboxing, cost and loop limits
Anthropic warns that the autonomous nature of agents means higher costs and the potential for compounding errors. It recommends extensive testing in sandboxed environments. Ask what cap stopped the candidate's last runaway loop: a step limit, a token budget or a timeout.
Tracing and evals for multi-step runs
Agent developers lean on the monitoring tools they already run: 43% use Grafana with Prometheus and 31.8% use Sentry for agent observability. Ask the candidate to walk through a trace of one failed run, step by step, and name the eval that would have caught it.
Orchestration frameworks
Ollama (51.1%), LangChain (32.9%) and LangGraph (16.2%) lead the orchestration tools that agent developers reported using. Screen against the framework you run. We also staff LangGraph developers and LangChain developers as separate tracks.
Agentic AI developers and multi-agent systems
A search for agentic AI developers usually means one of two builds: a single agent with many tools, or several agents passing work between them. Anthropic's Building effective agents describes the orchestrator-workers pattern, where a central model breaks a task down, hands the parts to worker calls and combines the results, and the evaluator-optimizer pattern, where one call drafts and another critiques it in a loop. Both add cost and failure points over a single agent, so ask the candidate when they last chose one and what the single-agent version could not do.
Then test the handoff. Give the candidate a two-agent design, a researcher and a writer, and ask what state crosses between them, who owns retries when a worker fails, and how a trace shows which agent made a bad call. Autonomous runs that last hours need the same answers plus a checkpoint: ask where the run saves progress so a crash resumes instead of restarting, and which actions still wait for a human reviewer. A candidate who has shipped this names the step and token caps on each agent, not only on the whole run.
Contractor or Employer of Record for a US Company
Software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire" under 17 U.S.C. § 101, and a copyright transfer must be in writing and signed under § 204(a). Write tool definitions, prompts, eval sets and agent code into the assignment by name.
IRS Publication 515 says the place where services are performed determines the source of the income, so a developer working from Manila or Jakarta earns foreign-source income. A foreign individual gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status.
Local law then applies its own test for employment. Philippine courts use the four-fold test, and in Atok Big Wedge v. Gison the Supreme Court called the power of control the most important of the four.
In Vietnam, Article 13 of the 2019 Labor Code looks past the name on the agreement. If it covers a paid job, wages and one party's management and supervision, it counts as a labor contract.
A full-time developer on your hours, with credentials to your production systems, fits the employment tests above. That is the case an Employer of Record covers, and our EOR, PEO and contractor comparison sets out the trade-offs. This is a summary, not legal advice.

Plan agent rollouts around both calendars. Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026 is a working day in Asia, so an engineer there can watch agent runs while your US team is off.
Article 112 of Vietnam's Labor Code gives five paid days for Lunar New Year, in late January or February. With a Vietnam-based developer, pause autonomous changes to production that week.
AI Agent Developer Hiring Process

Second Talent's vetting covers stages 2 to 5 before you see a profile.
Stage 1: Define what the hire owns
You write down the workflows to automate, the systems the agent may touch, the actions that need human approval and the framework in use. Add the overlap window your approvers need.
Stage 2: Application review
We look for an agent running against real systems: a support triage bot, an internal coding agent, or a repository with tool definitions and eval runs. A demo notebook alone does not pass.
Stage 3: Skills assessment
The candidate builds a small agent with two tools against a sandbox, sets a step limit and writes one eval. We add a document with an injected instruction and score how the agent handles it.
Stage 4: Live technical interview with a senior engineer
A senior engineer reviews the trace of the candidate's assessment run. The questions: where they would switch from agent to workflow, which permissions they would cut, and what their last runaway loop cost.
Stage 5: Background and reference checks
We ask former managers what the candidate's agents did in production, how the team heard about failures and how the candidate handled access to live systems. You then choose the contractor or EOR route above.
