TL;DR: WordPress developers in India earn $1,360 to $5,540+ a month working for international clients on our PHP developer rate card, and we shortlist 6-8 candidates within 24 hours. The BLS medians for US web and software developers were $92,650 and $135,980 a year in May 2025.
WordCamp Asia 2026 ran from 9 to 11 April at Mumbai's Jio World Convention Centre, with 2,400+ attendees from 50 countries. Indian WordPress work runs from agency site builds to enterprise platforms held to WordPress VIP's code review, so first ask which of the two a candidate's code has lived in.
Key takeaways
India's ceiling is the highest of the five markets, $500 above Malaysia's, and its $4,180 spread from floor to open top is the widest. We publish no WordPress developer card for India, so the India row uses our PHP developer card, the closest match.
The other rows come from WordPress cards. Each figure is what developers in that market earn working directly for foreign companies, before any employer or platform costs.
| Market | Monthly pay working for international clients (USD) |
|---|---|
| India | $1,360-$5,540+ |
| Vietnam | $1,080-$3,130+ |
| Indonesia | $1,130-$2,270+ |
| Philippines | $1,520-$4,070+ |
| Malaysia | $2,090-$5,040+ |

Monthly ranges from the Remote (Working for International Clients) figures on our rate cards for India, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia, converted at ExchangeRate-API mid-market rates for 14 September 2026.
The India card quotes ₹130,000 to ₹530,000+ a month, converted at ₹95.61 to the dollar. India's floor sits above Vietnam's and Indonesia's but below the Philippines'. A spread that wide means the brief sets the offer: a developer who maintains brochure sites prices near the floor, while one who writes plugins for an enterprise publisher prices near the top.
Through Second Talent you pay one monthly fee that bundles salary, payroll taxes, statutory contributions and our service fee, quoted per role and market. Our pricing page explains the subscription, and our WordPress developer cost-to-hire page covers contract rates for a short project.
BLS publishes no WordPress occupation. A developer who builds and maintains sites maps to Web Developers (15-1254), while one who writes plugins, custom blocks and integrations maps to Software Developers (15-1252).
| BLS OEWS, May 2025, national | Web Developers (15-1254) | Software Developers (15-1252) |
|---|---|---|
| Median annual | $92,650 | $135,980 |
| 10th percentile, monthly | $4,010 | $6,870 |
| 25th percentile, monthly | $5,350 | $8,770 |
| Median, monthly | $7,720 | $11,330 |
| 75th percentile, monthly | $10,520 | $14,330 |
| 90th percentile, monthly | $13,520 | $17,890 |
Monthly figures are the annual wages on the BLS OEWS profiles for 15-1254 and 15-1252 divided by 12, rounded to the nearest $10.
Pick the column before you compare offers. An enterprise plugin role belongs in the software column, and a site care role in the web column.
Salary is only part of the US cost. In the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, wages and salaries made up 68.5% of employer compensation costs for full-time private industry workers, and benefits the other 31.5%.
A normal office day in Bengaluru covers the whole US night. From 9:30 am to 6:30 pm local time is 04:00 to 13:00 UTC, which is midnight to 9:00 am in New York under EDT. Core updates, plugin updates and cache purges can finish before US traffic climbs.
Bengaluru keeps UTC+5:30 all year. US clocks stay on daylight time from 8 March to 1 November 2026, per NIST. The arithmetic: 9:00 am EDT (UTC-4) is 13:00 UTC, and 13:00 UTC is 6:30 pm in Bengaluru. Under EST (UTC-5) the same meeting lands at 7:30 pm.
| Bengaluru shift (UTC+5:30) | ET overlap (EDT / EST) | CT overlap (CDT / CST) | PT overlap (PDT / PST) | Hours between 7 pm and 6 am |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9:30 am-6:30 pm | 0 / 0 | 0 / 0 | 0 / 0 | 0 |
| 12:30 pm-9:30 pm | 3 / 2 | 2 / 1 | 0 / 0 | 2.5 |
| 2:30 pm-11:30 pm | 5 / 4 | 4 / 3 | 2 / 1 | 4.5 |
| 4:30 pm-1:30 am | 7 / 6 | 6 / 5 | 4 / 3 | 6.5 |
Each shift is nine clock hours with a meal break, counted against a 9 am to 5 pm US day.
The 2:30 pm row suits a developer who works with a marketing team on landing pages and launches. The 4:30 pm row reaches the West Coast, at a cost.
The last column matters for employees: Section 43 of the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code lets women work before 6 am and after 7 pm with their consent, and the government's OSH Code factsheet says the employer must arrange safety, facilities and transport.
We agree the shift before the offer, which is how our placements get 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.

In Patchstack's State of WordPress Security in 2026, 91% of the 11,334 new WordPress vulnerabilities found in 2025 sat in plugins and 6 in core. Screen the code a candidate writes before the sites they have launched, starting with the five areas below.
rtCamp and Multidots both hold the Premier tier in WordPress VIP's partner directory and list India among their locations (rtCamp, Multidots). Code on that platform goes through the VIP Code Analysis Bot, which runs PHP_CodeSniffer with the WordPress-VIP-Go standard.
The platform also changes habits. Uploads live on the VIP File System, a read-only object store, so a plugin that writes an export into the uploads folder needs another route. Ask where the candidate's last plugin wrote temporary files and what the review bot flagged on their last pull request.
The WordPress 7.1 release post, dated 19 August 2026, puts the post editor fully in an iframe for all themes. Admin styles no longer reach the editing canvas, so custom blocks styled through admin CSS can render wrong. The Plugin Check tool now flags blocks below apiVersion 3 for the 7.0+ iframe editor. Hand the candidate a block registered at apiVersion 2 and ask for the upgrade.
The PHP project ends security support for 8.2 on 31 December 2026. On 14 September 2026 the WordPress.org stats showed 24.77% of sites on PHP 8.2 and 16.98% still on 7.4. WordPress's requirements page lists PHP 8.3 or greater. Ask how the candidate found the plugin that broke on their last PHP upgrade, and what ran on staging before production switched.
Patchstack found that 46% of vulnerabilities were not fixed in time for public disclosure, and Broken Access Control was the most exploited class. The WordPress nonces handbook says nonces "should never be relied on for authentication, authorization, or access control" and points to current_user_can(). Plant a REST route or AJAX handler that checks only a nonce and see how long the candidate takes to find it.
Since WooCommerce 8.2, released in October 2023, High-Performance Order Storage is on by default for new stores and keeps orders in dedicated tables such as _wc_orders and _wc_orders_meta. While both storage modes run, one set of tables is authoritative and the other a synchronised backup. Ask the candidate to rewrite a report that reads orders with get_post_meta(), then explain which tables it hits during synchronisation.
Software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire" under 17 U.S.C. § 101, and a transfer must be in writing and signed under § 204(a). IRS Publication 515 says the place where services are performed determines the source of the income, and a foreign individual gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status.
Indian law leaves a contractor's theme or plugin with its author as well. Section 17 of the Copyright Act, 1957 makes the employer first owner only for work made under a contract of service. Section 19 requires a signed written assignment, deems it to last five years if it names no period, and presumes it covers India only if it names no territory. The GPL is a separate question: the WordPress.org plugin guidelines require GPL-compatible code for anything hosted there, and a licence does not transfer ownership.
India's Supreme Court treats control as one factor among several. In Sushilaben Indravadan Gandhi v. New India Assurance (2020), it named integration into the employer's business as another important test. A developer with admin access to your production site, working your release calendar, sits inside your business on that test.
Employment in India now runs under the four Labour Codes, in force since 21 November 2025, which make appointment letters mandatory for all workers. An Employer of Record with an Indian entity carries those duties, and our Employer of Record overview explains how the model works. This is a summary, not legal advice.
| Independent contractor | Employer of Record | |
|---|---|---|
| Legal employer | None; the developer invoices you | The EOR's Indian entity |
| US paperwork | Form W-8BEN from the developer | Service agreement with the EOR |
| IP | Signed assignment of themes, plugins and blocks naming period and territory (section 19) | Employer first owner under a contract of service (section 17), passed on through your EOR agreement |
| Local labor law | Employment finding if you control and integrate the developer | Labour Codes apply, including appointment letters and consent for women's work after 7 pm |
| Pay currency | Agreed in the contract, often USD | Local payroll run by the EOR |
India's writing score on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025 is 504, and its listening score is 457. The overall score is 484, 74th of 123 countries and regions against a global average of 488, and the IT job-function score is 487, per EF's India page.
City scores spread wide: Bengaluru 569, Ahmedabad 536, Chennai 534 and Pune 502. Most WordPress work happens in writing, from ticket replies to editor instructions and plugin changelogs, so the writing score matters more than the national average. Ask finalists to write the instructions an editor would need for a block they built, in under 200 words.
Plan releases around Indian holidays. The central government's 2026 holiday list puts Diwali on Sunday 8 November, and holidays differ by state, so ask for the developer's own list. Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026 is a working day in India. A developer there can run code-freeze checks and watch checkout on Black Friday, 27 November, while your US team is off.

Second Talent's vetting covers stages 2 to 5 before you see a profile.
Stage 1: Define what the hire owns You name the job inside the word WordPress: site care, block theme builds, WooCommerce, or plugin engineering. List the sites, hosting, PHP version and whether HPOS is on. Pick a shift from the table above.
Stage 2: Application review We look for code the candidate wrote and can open: a plugin repository, custom blocks, a migration they led. Agency CVs often list dozens of sites, so we ask which lines of code were theirs and which came from a theme or page builder.
Stage 3: Skills assessment
The candidate fixes a small plugin with a nonce-only handler, a get_post_meta() order lookup and a block at apiVersion 2. We run PHP_CodeSniffer against the result and read the commit messages.
Stage 4: Live technical interview with a senior engineer A senior engineer walks through the assessment in English, then sets a scenario: a PHP 8.2 to 8.3 upgrade on a store with dozens of active plugins, a week before Black Friday. The candidate plans staging, rollback and the order of plugin tests.
Stage 5: Background and reference checks We ask former managers about update discipline, backups the candidate restored, and how they handed over admin credentials when they left. You then choose the contractor or EOR route above.
We shortlist 6-8 candidates within 24 hours from 100,000+ pre-vetted engineers, accepting only the top 1% of applicants. WordPress developers from India come with $0 upfront, no lock-in and 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours. We handle contracts, payroll and equipment.
Our pricing page sets out the monthly subscription. For a search across more markets, our WordPress developers page compares the wider pool, and for custom applications we also staff full-stack developers in India.
Everything you need to know about employment laws, payroll, and compliance when hiring developers in India.
India is the deepest pool in Asia and the one where the gap between the best and the median is widest. The market rewards structured screening more than any other.
Technology industry revenue in FY26, up 6.1%
People employed in the sector
Global capability centres, about half the world total
Monthly starting point for a senior engineer through us
The sector reached about $315 billion in FY26 revenue, up 6.1 percent, while headcount rose only 2.3 percent to roughly 5.95 million, a net addition near 135,000. That divergence is AI productivity showing up in the numbers, and it means the market is now competing for engineers who can direct AI output rather than produce volume. More than two million professionals have been upskilled in AI, with 200,000 to 300,000 at an advanced level.
India scored 484 in the 2025 EF English Proficiency Index, 74th of 123. That national average hides an enormous spread: engineers in the top product companies and capability centres communicate at a level the number does not reflect, while the tail is genuinely weak. Screen the individual and ignore the market average.
Bengaluru dominates with more than 880 capability centre units and roughly 36 percent of all GCC talent. Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Delhi NCR and Mumbai each hold real depth with different specialisms. Notice periods commonly run 30 to 90 days, and 90 is standard at large enterprises, so build that into your start date rather than discovering it at offer stage.
See what each role actually pays in the India developer rate card.
