TL;DR: WordPress developers in Indonesia earn $1,130 to $2,270+ a month working for international clients on our rate card, the lowest ceiling of five markets, and we shortlist 6-8 candidates within 24 hours. The BLS medians for US web and software developers were $92,650 and $135,980 a year in May 2025.
Article 36 of Indonesia's Copyright Law gives a work made on commission, or in an employment relationship, to the person who made it unless the parties agree otherwise. A plugin a Jakarta developer writes for your store stays theirs until a contract moves it to you.
Key takeaways
- Jakarta runs one hour behind Manila, so a 4 pm to 1 am shift there shares five hours with a New York workday while US daylight time lasts.
- Indonesia's IT job-function score on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025 sits 52 points above its national score.
- A fixed-term employment contract in Indonesia must be written in Indonesian and Latin script.
- Elementor runs on 31.6% of WordPress sites in W3Techs' count, so ask every finalist how they would speed up a page builder site.
What WordPress Developers Earn in Indonesia Working for International Clients
Indonesia's floor sits $50 above Vietnam's, and its $1,140 spread from floor to open top is the narrowest in the table. Each range is what WordPress developers in that market earn working directly for foreign companies, before any employer or platform costs.
| Market |
Monthly pay working for international clients (USD) |
| Indonesia |
$1,130-$2,270+ |
| Vietnam |

Monthly ranges from the Remote (Working for International Clients) figures on our rate cards for Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia, converted at ExchangeRate-API mid-market rates for 14 September 2026.
The Indonesia card quotes Rp20,000,000 to Rp40,000,000+ a month, converted at Rp17,624 to the dollar. With a range this tight, scope matters more than price when you choose: a WooCommerce store with custom checkout code needs a stronger profile than a content site.
Through Second Talent you pay one monthly fee that bundles salary, payroll taxes, statutory contributions and our service fee, quoted per role and market. Our pricing page explains the subscription. For custom PHP with a thin WordPress layer, our PHP developers page is the closer brief.
US Pay Benchmark for WordPress Developers
BLS has no WordPress title. Site builds and upkeep map to Web Developers (15-1254), and plugin, block and integration work maps to Software Developers (15-1252), so both columns appear below.

Monthly figures are the annual wages on the BLS OEWS profiles for 15-1254 and 15-1252 divided by 12, rounded to the nearest $10.
Use the web column for a site care role and the software column for plugin engineering. A developer who owns checkout code on a store belongs in the second.
Salary is only part of the US cost. In the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, wages and salaries made up 68.5% of employer compensation costs for full-time private industry workers, and benefits the other 31.5%.
For a fixed-scope project, our WordPress developer cost-to-hire page sets out contract rates.
Time Zone Overlap: Jakarta Against ET, CT and PT
A Jakarta developer on a 9 am to 6 pm day works from 02:00 to 11:00 UTC. That is 10:00 pm to 7:00 am in New York under EDT, so plugin updates, backups and cache warm-ups can run while your US readers sleep.
Jakarta keeps Western Indonesian Time (WIB), UTC+7, with no daylight saving. US daylight time runs from 8 March to 1 November 2026, per NIST. The arithmetic: 9:00 am EDT (UTC-4) is 13:00 UTC, which is 8:00 pm in Jakarta, and 5:00 pm EDT is 4:00 am. Under EST the window moves to 9:00 pm to 5:00 am.

Each shift is nine clock hours with a meal break, counted against a 9 am to 5 pm US day.
The 2 pm to 11 pm row gives a New York marketing team three live hours in summer for launch-day fixes, and ends as the 11 pm window opens. The last column matters for employees. Article 76 of the Manpower Law requires an employer who has women working between 11 pm and 7 am to provide nutritious food and drink and keep the workplace secure. The employer must also provide transport for women working between 11 pm and 5 am.
A US call added after a day shift is overtime, not a later shift. The Job Creation Law caps overtime at 4 hours a day and 18 hours a week, with the worker's consent and overtime pay. We fix the shift before the offer, which is how our placements get 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.
WordPress Developer Skills to Screen For

WordPress runs 58.8% of the websites whose content management system W3Techs can identify. Among those sites, 31.6% use Elementor, 19.8% WooCommerce and 7.4% WPBakery. A developer who takes over an existing site will often meet one of them, so test whether candidates can improve that stack as well as extend it.
Page speed on page builder sites
Interaction to Next Paint replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in March 2024, per web.dev. Google's INP guide rates 200 milliseconds or less as good and above 500 milliseconds as poor, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads. Give the candidate an Elementor landing page with a slow INP score and ask which scripts they would remove, delay or replace.
Scheduled jobs off WP-Cron
The WP-Cron documentation says WP-Cron "is only triggered on page load", so a task set for 2:00 pm can wait until 5:00 pm on a quiet site. The fix, set out in the system scheduler guide, is DISABLE_WP_CRON plus a real cron entry. It matters more for a developer on the Jakarta day, because jobs set for your US night fire late when few visitors load pages. Ask how they confirmed jobs ran on their last site.
Custom fields after the ACF fork
On 12 October 2024 the WordPress security team forked Advanced Custom Fields into Secure Custom Fields under point 18 of the plugin directory guidelines. Sites with WordPress.org auto-updates on were switched to the fork. Ask which plugin the candidate's last three client sites run, where its updates come from, and how they would register the same field group in code.
WooCommerce extensions on HPOS
WooCommerce turned on High-Performance Order Storage for new stores from version 8.2 in October 2023. An incompatible plugin keeps the HPOS option disabled in the store settings. The HPOS recipe book shows extension authors how to declare compatibility with FeaturesUtil::declare_compatibility. Ask the candidate to audit a small extension that reads orders through get_post_meta() and make it compatible.
Patch speed on plugins
Patchstack's 2026 report counted 11,334 new WordPress vulnerabilities in 2025, a 42% rise on 2024. For the flaws attackers target most, the median time to mass exploitation was 5 hours. A developer on Jakarta time can apply a patch during your US night.
Ask for their update routine: staging, a backup they have restored, and the rule for patching outside the normal window.
Contractor or Employer of Record in Indonesia
Software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire" under 17 U.S.C. § 101, and a transfer must be in writing and signed under § 204(a). IRS Publication 515 says the place where services are performed determines the source of the income, and a foreign individual gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status.
Indonesia's Copyright Law lists computer programs as protected works (Article 40) and lets copyright pass by written agreement (Article 16). With Article 36 leaving commissioned and employee work with its maker by default, the contract, not the job title, decides who owns a theme or plugin.
Article 1 of the Manpower Law defines an employment relation by three elements: job, wages and work orders. A developer paid monthly to take tasks from your team fits all three on their face. The Job Creation Law also rewrote Article 57: a fixed-term contract must be in writing, in Indonesian and Latin script, and the Indonesian text prevails if a bilingual version conflicts.
Our Employer of Record service employs the developer through a local entity, and our Indonesia EOR page covers contracts and payroll there. This is a summary, not legal advice.

English Level and Working Norms in Indonesia
Indonesia's IT job-function score on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025 is 523, against a national score of 471 that ranks 80th of 123 countries and regions. The global average is 488, per EF's Indonesia page.
Reading, at 491, is Indonesia's strongest skill and speaking, at 447, its weakest. Jakarta scores 523, Surabaya 519, Bandung 505 and Yogyakarta 501. WordPress work leans on reading and writing: tickets, plugin changelogs, handover notes for editors. Run most of the assessment in writing, then use the live interview to test how the candidate explains a trade-off out loud.
Plan releases around Nyepi and Idul Fitri. In February 2026 the Manpower Ministry issued Circular M/2/HK.04/II/2026 on work from anywhere for company workers during the Nyepi and Idul Fitri holidays. Ask how a candidate's last team covered releases around those holidays. Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026 is a working day in Indonesia, so a developer there can watch a store through Black Friday while your US team is off.
WordPress Developer Hiring Process in Indonesia

Second Talent's vetting covers stages 2 to 5 before you see a profile.
Stage 1: Define what the hire owns
You say whether the job is a content platform, a WooCommerce store or plugin work, and list the page builder, the custom fields plugin and the hosting. Choose a Jakarta shift from the table above.
Stage 2: Application review
We look for sites the candidate still maintains and code they can show, such as a plugin repository or a speed fix with before-and-after scores. A portfolio of finished page builder sites does not pass on its own.
Stage 3: Skills assessment
The candidate takes a slow Elementor page, a WP-Cron job that misfires and a WooCommerce snippet built on get_post_meta(). They fix all three and write a short change note in English.
Stage 4: Live technical interview with a senior engineer
A senior engineer reviews the fixes with the candidate, then adds a scenario: a critical plugin vulnerability disclosed at 9 am Jakarta time on a store with a sale running in the US.
Stage 5: Background and reference checks
We ask former managers how the candidate handled updates, backups and client access, and whether they stayed with long maintenance contracts. You then choose the contractor or EOR route above.
