A Complete Guide to Hiring Wordpress Developers

Contents (8 sections)

TL;DR: WordPress developers from Asia start at $1,300 a month through Second Talent, shortlisted in about 24 hours. The closest US benchmarks, the BLS medians for web developers and software developers, were $92,650 and $135,980 a year in May 2025.

WordPress 7.1 shipped on 19 August 2026 with the post editor fully iframed for all themes, and the WordPress.org stats feed already counts 54% of sites on it. Blocks and editor styles written for the old admin canvas can break there. The developer you hire needs to know which of your custom blocks will.

Key takeaways

  • Vietnam has the lowest floor on our WordPress developer rate cards, $1,080 a month for work with international clients.
  • Patchstack logged 11,334 new WordPress vulnerabilities in 2025, 91% of them in plugins and 6 in core.
  • 16.98% of WordPress sites still report PHP 7.4, a version whose security support ended in November 2022.
  • A Manila shift from 5:00 pm to 2:00 am shares five hours with a New York workday while US daylight time lasts.

What WordPress Developers Earn Working for International Clients in Asia

Malaysia has the highest floor in the table, $2,090 a month, while Indonesia has the lowest ceiling, $2,270+. Each range is what WordPress developers in that market earn working directly for foreign companies, before any employer or platform costs.

Market Monthly pay working for international clients (USD)
Vietnam $1,080-$3,130+
Indonesia $1,130-$2,270+
Thailand $1,500-$5,000
Philippines $1,520-$4,070+
Malaysia $2,090-$5,040+

Monthly pay for WordPress Developers working for international clients, by market

Monthly ranges from the Remote (Working for International Clients) figures on our rate cards for Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia, converted at ExchangeRate-API mid-market rates for 14 September 2026.

Thailand's card is the only one here that quotes US dollars, and the only range with a fixed top. The others quote dong, rupiah, pesos and ringgit with an open ceiling. Singapore sits in a different band: our Singapore WordPress card starts at $5,920 a month for the same remote work.

Through Second Talent, WordPress developers start at $1,300 a month: one monthly fee that bundles salary, payroll taxes, statutory contributions and our service fee. The pricing page explains the subscription. For a build that is custom PHP with a thin CMS layer, our PHP developer page is the closer brief.

US Pay Benchmark for WordPress Developers

BLS has no WordPress occupation. A WordPress developer who writes plugins, custom blocks and integrations maps to Software Developers (15-1252); one whose job is building and maintaining sites maps to Web Developers (15-1254), so the table shows both.

BLS OEWS, May 2025, national Software Developers (15-1252) Web Developers (15-1254)
Median annual $135,980 $92,650
10th percentile, monthly $6,870 $4,010
25th percentile, monthly $8,770 $5,350
Median, monthly $11,330 $7,720
75th percentile, monthly $14,330 $10,520
90th percentile, monthly $17,890 $13,520

Monthly figures are the annual wages on the BLS OEWS profiles for 15-1252 and 15-1254 divided by 12, rounded to the nearest $10.

The gap between the two medians is $43,330 a year, and it tracks the scope of the job. Put the role in the column that matches the brief before comparing any offer.

Salary is only part of the US cost. In the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, wages and salaries made up 68.5% of employer compensation costs for full-time private industry workers, and benefits the other 31.5%.

For short projects, our WordPress developer cost-to-hire page sets out freelance hourly rates by market.

Time Zone Overlap with ET, CT and PT

WordPress runs its scheduled tasks on page views. The WP-Cron documentation says WP-Cron "is only triggered on page load", so a post scheduled for 2:00 pm on a quiet site can wait until 5:00 pm. A developer working while your US audience sleeps should move publishing and update jobs to a real server cron. US daylight time runs from 8 March to 1 November 2026, per NIST.

Engineer's city UTC offset 9:00 am ET (EDT) 9:00 am CT (CDT) 9:00 am PT (PDT)
Manila, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei UTC+8 9:00 pm 10:00 pm 12:00 midnight
Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Bangkok UTC+7 8:00 pm 9:00 pm 11:00 pm
Bengaluru UTC+5:30 6:30 pm 7:30 pm 9:30 pm

After 1 November 2026, every time in the table moves one hour later.

Two schedules fit the two kinds of WordPress work:

  • Releases and plugin updates, Manila, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (01:00 to 10:00 UTC). That is 9:00 pm to 6:00 am in New York, so staging checks, core and plugin updates and cache purges land before US traffic climbs.
  • Live work with marketing, Manila, 5:00 pm to 2:00 am (09:00 to 18:00 UTC). That covers 5:00 am to 2:00 pm EDT: five hours inside a 9-to-5 day in New York, four with Chicago and two with San Francisco.

Arithmetic for the second line: 5:00 pm in Manila is 09:00 UTC, and 09:00 UTC minus four hours is 5:00 am EDT. We agree the schedule before the offer, which is how our placements get 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.

The evening shift has a cost for employees. The Philippine Labor Code sets a night shift differential of at least 10% for work between 10 pm and 6 am (Article 86), which covers four of the nine hours. Vietnam's Labor Code adds at least 30% for work between 22:00 and 06:00 (Articles 98 and 106).

WordPress Developer Skills to Screen For

The core skill areas to screen for when hiring WordPress Developers

WordPress runs 58.8% of the websites whose content management system W3Techs can identify, 40.3% of all websites. A candidate with ten years of client sites can still be weak in each of the five areas below, so test them one by one.

Block themes and the iframed editor

The WordPress 7.1 release post lists responsive styles set in Global Styles, custom mobile and tablet breakpoints in theme.json, and a public SVG Icon API. The iframe change matters most for existing code: the editing canvas now runs apart from the admin, so admin CSS no longer reaches it. The Plugin Check tool now flags blocks below apiVersion 3 for the WordPress 7.0+ iframe editor. Give the candidate a block registered at apiVersion 2 and ask what they would change.

PHP upgrades on live sites

The WordPress requirements page recommends PHP 8.3 or greater and MariaDB 10.11+ or MySQL 8.0+. On 14 September 2026 the WordPress.org stats feed showed 24.77% of sites on PHP 8.2 and 16.98% still on 7.4, which lost security support on 28 November 2022.

The PHP project ends security support for 8.2 on 31 December 2026, so the 24.77% of sites on 8.2 need an upgrade plan this quarter. Ask how the candidate found the plugin that broke on the last PHP bump, and what they tested before switching production.

WooCommerce order storage

WooCommerce shows up on 19.8% of WordPress sites in W3Techs' count. Since WooCommerce 8.2, released in October 2023, High-Performance Order Storage is on by default for new stores. It moves orders out of the posts and postmeta tables into four dedicated order tables.

Any custom code that reads orders with get_post_meta() or direct SQL against the posts table misses data on those stores. Show the candidate such a snippet and ask for the HPOS-compatible rewrite and the compatibility-mode plan for an older store.

Plugin security and access control

In Patchstack's State of WordPress Security in 2026, 46% of vulnerabilities were not fixed in time for public disclosure. Broken Access Control was the most exploited class, and the weighted median time to mass exploitation for the most-targeted flaws was 5 hours.

The WordPress nonces handbook states that nonces "should never be relied on for authentication, authorization, or access control" and points to current_user_can(). Plant an AJAX handler that checks only a nonce, plus one unescaped output, and score whether the candidate finds both.

Custom fields after the ACF fork

On 12 October 2024, the WordPress security team forked Advanced Custom Fields into Secure Custom Fields under point 18 of the plugin directory guidelines. Sites with WordPress.org auto-updates turned on moved to the fork at their next update. Ask which one your candidate's last three sites run, where its updates come from, and how they would register the same field group in code.

Contractor or Employer of Record for a US Company

Software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire" under 17 U.S.C. § 101. A custom theme or plugin a contractor writes for you stays theirs until they transfer it, and § 204(a) requires that transfer in writing, signed.

WordPress adds a licence layer on top. The plugin directory guidelines require that everything hosted on WordPress.org comply with the GPL or a GPL-compatible licence. If you plan to publish a plugin, settle both the copyright assignment and the licence in the contract.

IRS Publication 515 says the place where services are performed determines the source of the income, so a developer working from Hanoi or Cebu earns foreign-source income. A foreign individual gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status.

Local law applies its own employment test. Philippine courts use the four-fold test, and in Atok Big Wedge v. Gison the Supreme Court called the power of control the most important of the four. Article 13 of Vietnam's 2019 Labor Code treats an agreement under another name as a labor contract when it covers a paid job, wages and one party's management and supervision.

Independent contractor Employer of Record
Legal employer None; the developer invoices you The EOR's local entity
US paperwork Form W-8BEN from the developer Service agreement with the EOR
IP Written assignment covering themes, plugins and blocks, plus the licence you publish under Assignment in the employment contract and your EOR agreement
Local labor law Classification risk if you set hours and review every change Night premiums, public holidays and leave apply
Pay currency Agreed in the contract Local currency; Vietnam's Labor Code states wages in dong (Article 95)

A fixed-scope site rebuild suits a contractor agreement. A developer who holds admin access to your production site and ships changes each week meets the tests above, and our Employer of Record service employs that developer in-country. Our Philippines EOR page lists the employer contributions to budget for. This is a summary, not legal advice.

English Level and Working Norms

A WordPress developer often writes for non-engineers: release notes for the marketing team, instructions for editors, replies in a plugin's support forum. Malaysia ranks 24th of 123 countries and regions on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, and Thailand 116th, against a global average of 488.

Country EF EPI 2025 score World rank (of 123) IT job-function score
Malaysia 581 24 590
Philippines 569 28 581
Vietnam 500 64 500
Indonesia 471 80 523
Thailand 402 116 459

Scores come from EF's country pages, such as Malaysia and Vietnam. EF publishes no 2025 page for Singapore. Ask finalists to write the editor instructions for a block they built, in under 200 words.

Commerce sites need a holiday plan. Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026 is a working day in Asia, and Black Friday and Cyber Monday follow on 27 and 30 November. A developer there can run the code freeze checks and watch checkout while your US team is off.

Article 112 of Vietnam's Labor Code gives five paid days for Lunar New Year, in late January or February, so schedule plugin updates around that week.

WordPress Developer Hiring Process

The stages of a WordPress Developer hiring process

Second Talent's vetting covers stages 2 to 5 before you see a profile. Our WordPress developer page for Vietnam covers a single-market search.

Stage 1: Define what the hire owns Name the job inside the word WordPress: block theme build, WooCommerce store, plugin engineering or site care. List the sites, the PHP version they run, whether HPOS is on, and who approves releases.

Stage 2: Application review We look for code the candidate wrote: a plugin repository, custom blocks, a migration they led. A portfolio of finished sites built with page builders does not show that on its own, so we ask what they wrote and what the designer or theme supplied.

Stage 3: Skills assessment The candidate fixes a small plugin with a nonce-only AJAX handler, an unescaped output and a get_post_meta() order lookup, then upgrades one block to apiVersion 3. We run Plugin Check and the WordPress Coding Standards rules against the result.

Stage 4: Live technical interview with a senior engineer A senior engineer reviews the assessment with the candidate and adds a scenario: a PHP 8.2 to 8.3 upgrade on a store with 40 active plugins. The questions cover staging, rollback and which plugin they would test first.

Stage 5: Background and reference checks We ask former managers about update discipline, backups the candidate restored, and how they handled a site outage. You then choose the contractor or EOR route above and hand over admin access last.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hire a WordPress developer through Second Talent?
Our 2026 Asian rates run $700-$1,800/month for junior developers with 1-3 years, $1,300-$3,000 for mid-level, $2,400-$5,000 for senior, and $4,500-$7,500 for leads. A comparable senior WordPress hire in the United States costs $7,000-$11,000 a month once payroll taxes and benefits are loaded. Rates move with specialism more than with location, so a WooCommerce engineer prices above a general theme builder in every market.
Which WordPress specialism should I hire for?
WordPress covers at least five different jobs, and the brief should name one. Theme and block engineers build in block themes, theme.json and custom React blocks. WooCommerce engineers own the order lifecycle, gateways, tax and shipping. Plugin engineers write hooks, custom tables and upgrade paths. Performance engineers handle object caching, query profiling and Core Web Vitals. Headless engineers run WordPress behind Next.js or Astro. Tell us which one you need and the shortlist gets far more accurate.
How do you vet WordPress developers before sending a shortlist?
Every engineer goes through a recruiter screen, a 60-minute live WordPress exercise in a real install, an architecture interview covering data modelling and plugin trade-offs, a practical code review round, and two reference calls. The code review round matters most here. WordPress runs bad code happily, so reading someone's actual work is the cheapest reliable quality signal there is.
Do your WordPress developers know the block editor, or only classic themes?
We screen for it specifically. WordPress 7.1 is the current release and version 7 already runs on the majority of installs, so block themes and custom blocks are the baseline rather than an advanced skill. Many agency-trained candidates across Asia have a decade of classic theme and Advanced Custom Fields work and thin block experience, which is why we test block work directly instead of trusting the CV.
Which Asian country is best for WordPress hiring?
It depends on the role. The Philippines has the strongest English and the deepest WooCommerce and care-plan experience, plus real United States overlap. Vietnam offers strong engineering fundamentals and excellent retention. India is the deepest pool and the only place with a large WordPress product engineering community, but it has the widest quality spread. Indonesia is the best value at mid-level and unusually strong on high-traffic content platforms.
Do I need a local entity to hire a WordPress developer in Asia?
No. We act as the legal Employer of Record across our markets and handle contracts, payroll, statutory contributions and compliance, so you never need to incorporate. You direct the work and treat the engineer as part of your team. Long-term contractor arrangements for what is really a full-time role create misclassification exposure, which is why we do not recommend them.
