TL;DR: Senior iOS developers from Asia start from $2,999 a month through Second Talent, matched in 24 hours. The closest US benchmark, the BLS median for software developers, was $135,980 a year in May 2025.
From April 2027, Apple will accept iOS app uploads only when developers build them with the iOS 27 SDK or later. Those builds ignore UIDesignRequiresCompatibility, the key that kept apps on their pre-Liquid Glass look. An iOS developer hired this quarter will spend part of the first six months on that redesign.
Key takeaways
- iOS held 60.68% of mobile operating system share in the US in August 2026 and 21.83% in Asia, so ask candidates for apps that shipped to iPhone-heavy markets.
- On our iOS developer rate cards, pay for work with international clients starts at $1,500 a month in Indonesia and $2,950 in Malaysia.
- Apple shows an organization's legal name as the seller on the App Store, so the app belongs in your developer account, not the developer's.
- Swift was used by 5.7% of professional developers in Stack Overflow's 2025 survey, against 11.5% for Kotlin.
What iOS Developers Earn Working for International Clients in Asia
India's card has the widest spread in the table, from $2,090 to $8,050 and open at the top, while Indonesia's starts lowest. The figure is what iOS developers in that market earn working directly for foreign companies, before any employer or platform costs.

Monthly ranges from the Remote (Working for International Clients) figures on our rate cards for Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Thailand and Malaysia, converted at ExchangeRate-API mid-market rates for 14 September 2026.
The Indonesian and Vietnamese cards publish the figure in US dollars with a fixed top. The other four quote pesos, rupees, baht and ringgit, and leave the top open.
Through Second Talent, senior iOS developers start from $2,999 a month: one monthly fee that bundles salary, payroll taxes, statutory contributions and our service fee. The pricing page explains the subscription. For a single market, our Philippines iOS page and Vietnam iOS page cover each country alone.
US Pay Benchmark for iOS Developers
The top of the Philippine range, $4,070 a month, sits below the 10th percentile of US software developer pay. BLS has no mobile or iOS occupation, so the role maps to Software Developers (15-1252), the occupation that designs and builds applications.
| BLS OEWS, May 2025, national |

Monthly figures are the annual wages on the OEWS profile for 15-1252 divided by 12, rounded to the nearest $10.
Salary is only part of the US cost. In the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, wages and salaries made up 68.5% of employer compensation costs for full-time private industry workers, and benefits the other 31.5%.
For a contract hire, our iOS developer cost-to-hire page puts a mid-level US freelance or contract iOS developer at $108 to $165 an hour, before payroll, insurance and leave.
Time Zone Overlap with ET, CT and PT
Apple says 90% of submissions are reviewed in less than 24 hours. A build your developer submits at the end of an Asian afternoon can clear review before your US team starts work. No city below changes its clocks, and US daylight time runs from 8 March to 1 November 2026, per NIST.

After 1 November 2026, every time in the table moves one hour later.
A worked example for an East Coast team: a Ho Chi Minh City shift from 2:00 pm to 11:00 pm runs 07:00 to 16:00 UTC, which is 3:00 am to 12:00 noon EDT. That gives three hours inside a New York day and two with Chicago.
The same shift ends at 9:00 am in San Francisco, so a West Coast team needs a later start.
Use the shared hours for design review and TestFlight feedback, and the first hours of the shift, before New York wakes, for builds and the release checklist.
One hour of that shift, 22:00 to 23:00, is night work, and Vietnam's Labor Code adds at least 30% for employees working between 22:00 and 06:00 (Articles 98 and 106). The Philippine Labor Code sets at least 10% for 10 pm to 6 am (Article 86).
iOS Developer Skills to Screen For

Guideline 2.5.1 requires apps to run on the currently shipping OS and to phase out deprecated frameworks, so skills from two SDK cycles ago can block a submission. Test the five areas below against the iOS version your app targets.
Liquid Glass and the iOS 27 SDK
Apple's documentation for UIDesignRequiresCompatibility now states that the system ignores the key when you build for iOS 27 or later. Apps that used it to defer the iOS 26 design lose that option at the April 2027 SDK deadline. Give the candidate a screen with a custom navigation bar and a tinted tab bar, and ask what changes once the key stops working.
Swift 6 concurrency
The Swift project released Swift 6 on 17 September 2024 with an opt-in language mode that reports potential data races as compiler errors. Swift 5.10 had offered the same checks only as warnings behind a compiler flag. Hand the candidate a module with a shared mutable image cache and ask them to turn on the Swift 6 language mode and fix the errors without scattering @MainActor everywhere.
SwiftUI with Observation, and where Combine still fits
Starting with iOS 17, SwiftUI supports the Observable macro. A view that tracks an @Observable model updates only when a property its body reads changes; with ObservableObject, any published property change redraws it. Ask the candidate to migrate one view model, then explain which Combine pipelines they would keep, such as debounced search.
Privacy manifests and account deletion
Since 1 May 2024, Apple's upcoming requirements page has required approved reasons for listed APIs, including calls made from third-party SDKs, before you can upload a new or updated app. Guideline 5.1.1(v) of the App Review Guidelines requires an app that supports account creation to offer account deletion inside the app. Plant an analytics SDK without a privacy manifest in the take-home and see whether the candidate flags it.
TestFlight and phased release
TestFlight lets you invite up to 10,000 external testers, and a build stays available for 90 days, per Apple's TestFlight overview. The first build sent to external testers goes to App Review. A phased release spreads an update over 7 days, from 1% to 50% of users with automatic updates before full release, and you can pause it for up to 30 days in total. Ask for the last release the candidate paused and what the crash report showed.
ARKit and RealityKit work
ARKit is Apple's augmented reality framework for iPhone and iPad. It handles world tracking, plane detection, image and face tracking, and scene reconstruction on devices with a LiDAR Scanner. RealityKit is the framework Apple pairs with it to render and simulate 3D content, and the same RealityKit skills carry over to visionOS. An ARKit hire is a different profile from a general SwiftUI developer, so screen for it on its own:
- Shipped AR. Ask for an App Store app that uses ARKit and which part the candidate built: session setup, anchoring, rendering or the content pipeline.
- Device limits. Ask which features they gated by device capability, such as LiDAR scene meshes, and what users without a LiDAR Scanner saw instead.
- Performance. AR keeps the camera, tracking and rendering running together, so heat and battery drain show up within minutes. Ask how they profiled a session in Instruments and what they cut.
- 3D assets. Ask how they prepared USDZ models and kept file sizes small enough for a download over cellular.
A short practical test: place a model on a detected horizontal plane, keep it anchored while the user walks around it, and show a clear message when tracking is lost.
UIKit codebases and Objective-C
Many App Store apps still run large parts of their interface in UIKit, and some carry Objective-C from before Swift existed. A developer who has only worked in SwiftUI can struggle in that code, so screen for it when your app has it:
- UIKit depth. Ask the candidate to build one screen with a collection view on a diffable data source and a compositional layout, then host a new SwiftUI view inside it with
UIHostingController.
- Auto Layout. Give them a cell whose height breaks at the largest Dynamic Type accessibility sizes and ask for the fix.
- Objective-C interop. Ask how they expose a Swift class to Objective-C, what a bridging header does, and how nullability annotations change the Swift signature of an Objective-C method.
- Memory. Older code leans on delegates and blocks, so ask where they would use
weak or unowned to break a retain cycle in a block-based API.
Ask what share of their last codebase was UIKit or Objective-C and what they migrated first. Our Objective-C interview questions add question sets for this part of the role.
Contractor or Employer of Record for a US Company
Apple displays the enrolling organization's name as the seller of its apps, and enrolling as an organization requires a legal entity and a D-U-N-S Number. The Apple Developer Program costs 99 USD per membership year. Enroll your company, add the developer to your team, and keep the signing certificates and App Store Connect records under your account.
The code needs the same care. Software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire" under 17 U.S.C. § 101, and a copyright transfer must be in writing and signed under § 204(a). Name the Xcode project, design assets and test suites in the assignment.
IRS Publication 515 says the place where services are performed determines the source of the income, so a developer working from Manila or Bangkok earns foreign-source income. A foreign individual gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status.
The developer's own country applies its own test. Philippine courts use the four-fold test, and in Atok Big Wedge v. Gison the Supreme Court called the power of control the most important of the four. Article 13 of Vietnam's 2019 Labor Code treats an agreement under another name as a labor contract when it covers a paid job, wages and one party's management and supervision.
Employees in the Philippines also receive 13th-month pay under PD 851 and Memorandum Order 28, with contributions to SSS (15% shared, credit cap ₱35,000), PhilHealth (5%, cap at ₱100,000) and Pag-IBIG (2% each side, ₱10,000 cap).

iOS work produces English that Apple and your customers read. Guideline 2.1 asks for demo account details with each submission, and the release notes go straight to the App Store. Have finalists write review notes for a login-gated build and a release note for a bug fix.
Plan releases on both calendars. Thanksgiving, 26 November 2026, is a working day in Asia, so a developer there can watch crash reports while your US team is off. Vietnam's Labor Code gives five paid days for Lunar New Year (Article 112), in late January or February; avoid a phased release that week with a Vietnam-based developer.
iOS Developer Hiring Process

Second Talent's vetting covers stages 2 to 5 before you see a profile. Our iOS developer interview questions and Swift interview questions add question sets for your final round.
Stage 1: Define what the hire owns
Write down the minimum iOS version, the share of screens still in UIKit, the SDKs you ship and who holds the App Manager role in App Store Connect. Add the Liquid Glass work planned before April 2027.
Stage 2: Application review
We look for apps on the App Store with the candidate in the release history, and ask which markets those apps served. A tutorial clone with no shipped version does not pass.
Stage 3: Skills assessment
The candidate builds one SwiftUI feature on an @Observable model under the Swift 6 language mode, with an analytics SDK missing its privacy manifest planted in the project. We score the pull request description along with the code.
Stage 4: Live technical interview with a senior engineer
A senior engineer walks through the assessment, then opens a crash log from a background task. The questions cover actor isolation, a paused phased release and how the candidate would move a UIKit screen to the new design.
Stage 5: Background and reference checks
We ask former managers about release discipline and how the developer handled an App Review rejection. You then sign the IP assignment, as a contractor or through an EOR, and add the hire to your Apple developer team.
