What drives a developer's rate

Four levers set the price: country tier, role, seniority, and team size. The calculator above adjusts all four live.

01

Country tier

Two pricing tiers across Asia. Low-cost markets (Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand) run at the baseline rate. High-income markets (Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China) run at 2× baseline — local tech salaries, cost of living, and retention economics all justify the uplift.

02

Seniority

Four bands at low-cost baseline: Junior $2,500/mo, Mid $3,500/mo, Senior $4,800/mo, Lead / Staff $5,800/mo. Each step up reflects 2–3 years more experience and proportionally more ownership of complex systems. Doubles in high-income markets.

03

Role scarcity

Front-end and back-end engineers set the baseline (1.0×). Full-stack, mobile, and data engineers carry a 5–15% premium. ML / AI engineers carry a 30% premium because the supply-side pool is tiny relative to demand.

04

Team-size leverage

Hiring a cohort of 4+ developers at once does not lower per-engineer cost, but it dramatically shortens total time-to-productive because we can run hiring loops in parallel. Past 10+ developers in one country, own-entity economics start to matter (see the EOR vs Entity estimator).

05

Engagement length

Rate is independent of engagement length — you pay the same per month whether you commit to 3 months or 36. We do not lock contracts or charge early-exit penalties. The full rate card above stays the same at any horizon.

06

What the rate includes

Base salary, employer statutory contributions, full payroll processing, EOR-of-record status, local tax filings, statutory benefits, performance management, and replacement guarantee. No per-incident fees, no tooling markup, no annualised minimums.

How to use this estimator

From role brief to first engineer on your team. The estimator gives you the number; these are the steps that get you a real hire at that number.

1

Pick the role profile

Select your role type and seniority above. The rate that appears is a real quote — no signups, no follow-up sales calls unless you ask for one. Play with the options to see where scarcity premiums kick in.

2

Size the team

Decide how many developers and over what engagement horizon. Team monthly + engagement total update live. Typical first engagements are 1–3 developers over 12 months.

3

Send us the brief

When the numbers work, send a one-paragraph role brief. We return 3–5 pre-vetted developer profiles within 24 hours matching your stack, seniority, and time-zone needs.

4

Interview + pick

Run your own technical interviews on the shortlist. Most teams land their hire inside 7–10 days. If no candidate fits, we return a new shortlist at no charge — our vetting is what you are paying for.

5

Onboard + ship

Day-one onboarding: laptop, collaboration-stack access, tax/payroll setup, and a dedicated ST customer success lead. Your new engineer is shipping reviewed code within 2 weeks.

Software developer cost questions, answered

Why do high-income Asian markets cost double?
Local tech salaries, cost of living, and retention dynamics in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China are roughly 2× the rates in Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. A senior engineer in Singapore earns ~$7,000–10,000/month locally; a senior engineer in Vietnam earns ~$3,000–5,000. Our retail pricing reflects that reality — same Second Talent service layer, different underlying labour cost. Within each tier, pricing is flat so you get one clean invoice regardless of which country in the tier your engineer sits.
How does the role multiplier work?
Standard engineering roles (frontend, backend) are the 1.0× baseline. The multiplier reflects market scarcity for that specialty: full-stack is 1.05×, mobile and data engineering are 1.10×, DevOps / SRE is 1.15×, ML / AI is 1.30×, and QA is 0.85×. The rate card above shows every combination at a glance.
What seniority is a "Senior developer" at Second Talent?
Five to eight years of professional experience, demonstrated ownership of non-trivial systems, and proven independence. Our vetting goes deeper than resume years — every senior we place has passed a live coding loop, a system-design interview, and a communication / collaboration screen. The $4,800/month is for this fully-vetted senior band.
How does the US in-house comparison work?
We use fully-loaded US monthly rates: salary × 1.35 to account for benefits, taxes, equipment, office / remote stipend, and payroll overhead. Junior: $8,500/mo. Mid: $11,000/mo. Senior: $14,500/mo. Lead: $19,000/mo. The role multiplier applies the same way (ML seniors in the US also carry a 30% premium). Comparison: ST senior ML = $6,240/mo vs US senior ML = $18,850/mo.
Can I build a mixed team — some seniors, some mid-level?
Yes — this calculator shows one role × seniority combination at a time. For a mixed team, estimate each slot separately and sum. Most of our clients run exactly this pattern: 1 senior to architect + 2 mid-level to implement + 1 junior to ramp up. Total engagement cost is the sum of the individual rates.
What if the developer does not work out?
Within the first 90 days, we replace the developer at no additional cost — we source, vet, and place a new engineer and absorb the transition. After 90 days, we manage offboarding and compliance and help source a replacement at no additional fee beyond the normal engagement rate.
