Java runs the systems that move money. Core banking ledgers, insurance claims engines, order management, telecom billing, airline reservations, warehouse routing. Most of that logic lives on the JVM. A large share of it was written, patched and rescued by engineers in India.

India's Java hubs and what each is strong at
Java capability is spread across the country, but the flavour changes by city. That matters when you screen. A Pune engineer from an insurance core team thinks in batch jobs and reconciliation. A Bengaluru product engineer thinks in request latency and partition keys. Both are useful. They are not interchangeable.

Does city still matter for a remote role?
Less than it did in 2019, but it still moves two things. First, rate expectations. A Bengaluru engineer with two competing product offers negotiates harder than a Coimbatore engineer with one. The Java stack to screen for in 2026
Language and runtime
Ask which LTS version the candidate ships on. Java 17 is the current baseline in Indian enterprises, and Java 21 adoption grew fast through 2025. Strong candidates use records, sealed types, pattern matching for switch and text blocks without being prompted. Ask about virtual threads. An engineer who can explain when Loom helps, and when it does not because of pinned synchronised blocks, is thinking properly.
Runtime knowledge separates real seniors from framework users. Look for G1 and ZGC trade-offs, heap dump analysis with Eclipse MAT, flame graphs from async-profiler, and JFR recordings in production. Anyone who has fixed a memory leak under load will tell that story with real numbers.
Frameworks
Spring Boot 3.x dominates. That means Spring Framework 6, the Jakarta namespace change, Spring Data JPA, Spring Security 6, and often Spring Cloud Gateway or OpenFeign. Hibernate knowledge should go past annotations to N plus 1 queries, fetch strategies, second level cache and transaction boundaries. Quarkus and Micronaut show up in newer teams, mostly for serverless workloads. Struts, JSF and EJB appear in legacy modernisation candidates, which is a plus if that is your project.
Data and messaging
Oracle and PostgreSQL are the two you will meet most. MySQL, MongoDB and Redis are common secondary stores. Kafka is the default event backbone in Indian fintech and retail, so ask about consumer groups, rebalancing, idempotent producers, exactly once semantics and schema registry discipline. RabbitMQ and ActiveMQ still run in older estates. Flyway or Liquibase for migrations is a good sign of release hygiene. Build, test and delivery
Maven remains the default, with Gradle common in product companies. Testing maturity is the single best predictor of code quality. Look for JUnit 5, Mockito, AssertJ, WireMock and Testcontainers for integration tests against real Postgres or Kafka containers. Ask about contract tests and load tests with Gatling or JMeter. SonarQube quality gates, Jenkins or GitHub Actions pipelines, Helm charts and ArgoCD rollouts are all normal for India seniors. Cloud
AWS leads by a wide margin, usually EKS or ECS with RDS, MSK, S3 and CloudWatch. Azure appears in banking and in captive centres of European firms. GCP is a distant third. Ask about the JVM, not only the framework
A good probe is simple. "Tell me about the worst production incident you owned in a Java service." Strong candidates give a timeline, a metric, a root cause and a fix. Weak candidates describe a bug someone else found. Follow up with heap and thread dump questions. This one question sorts a shortlist faster than any puzzle.
Design questions that suit India's experience base
Use a problem close to their history. Payment retry with idempotency. Order state machine with Kafka. Batch reconciliation between two ledgers. Rate limited public API with caching. These reward real experience. A generic "design Twitter" prompt rewards preparation instead.
Use a code review exercise
Send 150 lines of Spring Boot code with four planted problems. A missing transaction boundary. An N plus 1 query. A caught and swallowed exception. A mutable object shared across threads. Seniors find three or four in twenty minutes and explain the risk of each. This is the fastest seniority test we run.

Three models work well for Java teams.
Full overlap for European hours. The engineer works roughly 12:30pm to 9:30pm IST. This suits London and Amsterdam teams and needs no compromise on pairing or reviews.

Entity, payroll and compliance in India

Two details catch foreign buyers out. First, misclassification. If an engineer works full time on your roadmap, under your management, on your tools, a contractor agreement is fragile. Indian authorities and courts look at substance. Second, intellectual property. Assignment must be explicit in writing. Do not assume your home country default applies. Also plan for notice periods. Engineers leaving Indian firms often serve 60 or 90 days, so ask early and build it into your start date.
Common hiring mistakes
Screening on keywords. A CV listing Spring Boot, Kafka, Kubernetes, AWS and Terraform tells you nothing about depth. Ask what they owned and what broke.
Ignoring notice periods. Teams pick a candidate, then discover a 90 day wait. Ask in the first call. Keep a second finalist warm.
Interviewing only in your own morning. If every round sits at 6am IST, you filter for availability rather than quality.
