Candidates who have shipped for Indian consumer scale often bring extra skills you can use. Indic language and font rendering. Right to left support for Gulf market apps. Adjacent skills worth asking about
On-device intelligence is now a normal mobile requirement. Core ML, ML Kit, TensorFlow Lite and local vector search show up in real briefs. A few patterns worth knowing. iOS carries a small premium in India because the local device base is smaller, so supply is thinner than Android. Flutter sits slightly below native, though top Flutter architects command senior native money. Engineers who own the release pipeline end to end price at the top of their band, and they are worth it. Also budget for devices. A real test matrix needs a low-end Android handset, a mid-range one, a current iPhone and an older iOS device. That is a few hundred dollars once, and it prevents a category of bugs you cannot reproduce on a simulator.
How to interview and vet mobile engineers in India
Skip the whiteboard, use the app
The best predictor is a shipped app. Ask for App Store and Play Store links, then open them on your own phone. Check cold start, scroll performance, error states and what happens in airplane mode. Then ask the candidate to explain one architectural decision in that app and what they would change now. Vague answers here are the clearest disqualifier we see.
A four-stage process that works
Stage one is a 30 minute screen on platform depth and English. Stage two is a 90 minute live coding session in Xcode or Android Studio, consuming a real API, handling pagination, errors and cache. Stage three is a debugging exercise on an existing repo with a leak or a race condition. Stage four is a product and collaboration conversation with your PM or designer.
Questions that separate levels
Ask how they would cut app size by 30 percent. Ask what they do when a Play Store release shows a crash spike at 5 percent rollout. Ask how they handle a background upload that must survive process death. Ask how they version an API contract without breaking users stuck on old builds. Seniors answer these with specifics and trade-offs. Mid-level engineers answer with tool names only.
Red flags we filter out
We screen out agency style candidates whose portfolio is thirty near-identical template apps. We check whether test coverage claims survive a code walkthrough. We verify that the candidate personally wrote the architecture they describe, using follow-up questions on failure cases. Mobile work suits async delivery better than most roles. Builds, TestFlight distributions and Play Console internal tracks all review fine overnight. What does need live time is design review and release go or no-go calls. We set a fixed two-hour window for those and let the rest run async. Entity, payroll and compliance in India
You do not need an Indian subsidiary to hire here. Most clients start on our Employer of Record and stay on it. What to get right
Misclassification is the main risk. If an engineer works your hours, uses your systems and reports to your manager, an Indian authority may view them as an employee regardless of the contract label. EOR removes that exposure. Second, notice periods. Indian tech employers commonly require 60 to 90 days, so a candidate accepting in March may only start in May. We factor that into every search and flag short-notice candidates early.
Data protection and app compliance
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act shapes how consent and data handling get built into Indian apps. Engineers here already write consent screens, deletion flows and data minimisation logic. If you serve EU users, confirm GDPR familiarity too. Also confirm Play Store data safety declarations and App Store privacy manifest experience, since incomplete disclosures are now a common rejection cause.
IP assignment
Our contracts assign all IP to you, including code, designs and signing artefacts. Insist on control of your own signing keys, App Store Connect and Play Console accounts from day one. We have inherited handovers where an agency held the keystore, and it is a painful thing to unwind.
Common hiring mistakes
Hiring by framework instead of by product need. A team posts for React Native, hires quickly, then discovers the roadmap needs a custom camera and BLE peripheral support. Decide the platform strategy first, then hire.
Treating one engineer as a whole mobile team. Mobile needs design input, API stability and QA on real devices. A single engineer with no support ships slowly and burns out.
Underpaying for release ownership. Engineers who own signing, provisioning, phased rollouts and crash triage cost more and prevent more incidents. Paying $2,500 when the market says $4,500 gets you a feature coder, not an owner.
Ignoring the low-end device. If your test matrix is one recent iPhone, you will discover a whole class of Android bugs from user reviews. Indian engineers will push back on this if you let them.
Skipping the debugging round. Greenfield coding tests reward speed. Mobile work is mostly maintenance on someone else's code. Test that.
Missing notice periods in planning. Build the 60 to 90 day norm into your timeline, or start the search a quarter early.
