Hire Full-Stack Developers in India

Contents (10 sections)

TL;DR: India has the deepest full-stack talent pool in Asia. Senior engineers cost $2,500-$6,000/month, roughly a third of US rates. We send shortlists in about 24 hours.

Why companies hire full-stack developers in India

Full-stack roles are the hardest to fill in-house and the easiest to fill well in India. The reason is structural. India has run product engineering for global software companies for over two decades. That created a large population of engineers who own features end to end, from Postgres schema to React component to CI pipeline.

A full-stack hire is a leverage point for small teams. One engineer who can ship a feature without waiting on a front-end handoff moves faster than two specialists. Indian engineers slot into that model naturally, because the Indian startup market itself is full-stack heavy. Product teams at Razorpay, Zerodha, Zoho and thousands of smaller SaaS companies staff generalists by default.

The cost gap is the other half of the story. A senior full-stack engineer in San Francisco runs $11,000-$18,000/month fully loaded. The same skill set in Bengaluru or Pune costs $2,500-$6,000. That is not a quality discount. It reflects local cost of living and currency, not capability.

What our clients typically build with India full-stack teams

Use case Typical stack Team shape
B2B SaaS product build Next.js, Node, TypeScript, Postgres, AWS 2 to 4 full-stack, 1 lead
Internal tooling and admin React, Django, Celery, Redis 1 to 2 full-stack
Marketplace platform Rails or Spring Boot, React, MySQL 3 to 6 full-stack, 1 DevOps
AI-enabled product surface Next.js, FastAPI, Postgres, pgvector 2 full-stack, 1 AI engineer
Legacy modernisation Java Spring, Angular to React migration 2 to 3 senior full-stack

We placed a four-person full-stack pod with a UK healthtech client in early 2026. They had one in-house architect and no product engineers. The India pod shipped a patient-facing portal in eleven weeks on Next.js and Node. The client's burn for that pod was under $16,000/month.

India's full-stack ecosystem and where the engineers are

India produces roughly 1.5 million engineering graduates a year. That number alone is not useful. What matters is where product-grade full-stack experience concentrates.

The main hubs

Bengaluru. The deepest pool by a wide margin. Product companies, unicorn startups, and every major global R&D centre. Best place to find engineers who have owned a service in production at scale. Also the most expensive and the most competitive on counteroffers.

Pune. Strong on Java, Spring Boot and enterprise-grade full-stack work. Slightly lower salary expectations than Bengaluru. Good retention. Many engineers here have deep experience with regulated domains like insurance and banking.

Hyderabad. Heavy Microsoft and Amazon presence shaped the market. Strong .NET and Azure depth alongside the usual React and Node. Growing fast on data and cloud roles too.

NCR, meaning Gurugram and Noida. Consumer product and fintech heavy. Fast-moving engineers used to shipping weekly. Sometimes lighter on testing discipline, so screen for it.

Chennai. Strong fundamentals, good Java and Python depth, historically services-led. Excellent value at mid and senior levels.

Tier-two cities. Indore, Coimbatore, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Kochi. Remote work opened these up properly. Salary expectations run 15 to 25 percent below Bengaluru for equivalent skill. We source here often for cost-sensitive mandates.

Hub Full-stack depth Relative cost Best for
Bengaluru Very high 100 (baseline) Scale experience, product ownership
Pune High 85-90 Java/Spring, enterprise systems
Hyderabad High 85-90 .NET, Azure, cloud-native
NCR High 90-95 Consumer, fintech, fast iteration
Chennai Medium-high 80-85 Strong fundamentals, value
Tier-two Medium 75-85 Cost efficiency, retention

If you want a broader view of the market before narrowing to full-stack, our page on how to hire developers in India covers the country-level picture across every role.

The stack to screen for in 2026

Full-stack means different things at different companies. Define it before you interview, or you will waste weeks.

Front end

React dominates. Roughly four in five full-stack candidates we screen in India list React as primary. Next.js adoption is now mainstream at senior level, particularly App Router and server components. Vue is a distinct minority, maybe one in eight. Angular still shows up in enterprise and Pune-based candidates.

What to actually test: state management choices, why they picked Zustand or Redux Toolkit or React Query, and whether they understand rendering strategy. Many candidates can build a component. Fewer can explain when to use SSR versus static generation versus client fetching.

Back end

Three clusters lead the Indian market:

  • Node and TypeScript. Express, NestJS, Fastify. Strongest among startup-trained engineers. Best fit if you want one language across the stack.
  • Java and Spring Boot. Deepest pool overall. Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad especially. Strong on transactional systems and JVM tuning. See our Java developers in India page for depth on this.
  • Python. Django, FastAPI, Flask. Growing quickly because it doubles as the AI-adjacent language. Detail on our Python developers in India page.

Rails and .NET are smaller but present. PHP with Laravel is common at lower price points and in agency backgrounds.

Data layer

Postgres is the default choice for new builds. MySQL is everywhere in existing systems. MongoDB is very common, sometimes used where relational would be better, so probe the reasoning. Redis for caching and queues is near-universal at senior level.

The skill that separates good from great: query performance. Ask a candidate to describe a slow query they fixed. Weak answers stop at "I added an index". Strong answers involve EXPLAIN output, cardinality, connection pooling, and N+1 patterns in the ORM.

Infrastructure and delivery

Skill Prevalence in India senior full-stack pool Screen how
Docker ~90% Ask about image size, layer caching
AWS core services ~75% ECS vs Lambda tradeoffs, IAM basics
GitHub Actions or GitLab CI ~80% Their actual pipeline design
Terraform ~30% Only if you need it, do not assume
Kubernetes operations ~25% Distinguish "used" from "operated"
Observability tooling ~40% Datadog, Sentry, OpenTelemetry usage

If your infrastructure needs are heavy, do not stretch a full-stack hire to cover them. Pair them with a dedicated DevOps engineer in India or a cloud engineer instead. We see clients make this mistake constantly.

AI-adjacent expectations

By 2026, most full-stack briefs we receive include some AI surface. Chat interfaces, embeddings search, LLM-backed workflows. A strong Indian full-stack engineer can wire up an OpenAI or Anthropic API, handle streaming responses, and build retrieval with pgvector. That is different from model work. If you need fine-tuning, evals or agent orchestration, hire a specialist. Our pages for AI developers in India and LLM developers in India cover those roles properly.

2026 salary bands for full-stack developers in India

These are our actual India rates. Monthly, in USD, for engineers working remotely for international clients.

Level Experience Monthly USD What you get
Junior 1-3 years $1,000-$1,800 Ships well-specced tickets, needs review
Mid-level 3-5 years $1,800-$3,200 Owns features end to end, some design input
Senior 5-8 years $2,500-$6,000 Owns a domain, makes architecture calls, mentors
Staff / Lead 8+ years $6,000-$9,000 Sets technical direction, leads a pod, hires
US comparison 5-8 years $11,000-$18,000 Same work, roughly 3x the cost

What moves a number inside a band

  • Location. Bengaluru senior sits high in band. Tier-two sits low.
  • Stack scarcity. Next.js plus strong TypeScript plus AWS commands a premium. Generic PHP does not.
  • Domain experience. Fintech, healthcare and payments experience adds 10 to 20 percent.
  • Product company background. Engineers from product companies price above services-firm backgrounds, usually justifiably.
  • English fluency in live settings. Real premium, because it determines how much of your team's time they save.

Budget for total cost, not just salary. Add employer contributions, equipment, and any EOR fee. Our developer rate card breaks this down by role and level if you want the full picture.

A note on counteroffers

The Indian market is liquid. Good full-stack engineers get counteroffered. If your process takes five weeks, you will lose candidates. We keep our loop to 7 to 12 days for this reason. Speed is a hiring feature, not a nicety.

How to interview and vet full-stack engineers in India

Most failed India hires we clean up came from a bad process, not a bad market. Here is what works.

Step 1: Define the split before you screen

Write down the actual ratio. Is this 70 percent back end and 30 percent UI? Or an even split? Or mostly front end with API work? Candidates who look identical on paper differ enormously here. A "full-stack" engineer from a React-heavy startup is not interchangeable with one from a Spring Boot shop.

Step 2: Screen the resume for ownership signals

Look for:

  • Named products they built, not just technologies listed
  • Tenure of 18 months or more in at least two roles
  • Evidence of production ownership, on-call, incident handling
  • Git or open source activity where available

Red flags: a 20-technology skills list with no depth anywhere, three jobs in two years without explanation, or certifications standing in for shipped work.

Step 3: Run a real end-to-end exercise

We use a scoped 90-minute build. Add a field to an existing model, expose it via an endpoint, render and edit it in the UI, write one test. It is deliberately unglamorous. It reveals everything.

What we grade:

Signal What good looks like
Migration handling Reversible, no data loss, considers existing rows
API design Validation, error shapes, status codes correct
Front-end wiring Loading and error states handled, no leaked state
Testing One meaningful test, not a snapshot for show
Git hygiene Coherent commits, readable messages
Communication Asks clarifying questions before coding

Step 4: Systems and tradeoffs conversation

Forty-five minutes, no whiteboard theatre. Take a real feature from your product. Ask them to design it aloud. Push on auth, caching, background jobs, failure modes and rollout. You are testing judgement, not recall.

A good question we use often: "Your endpoint got 10x traffic overnight and latency tripled. Walk me through the first hour." Strong candidates start with observability, not with code.

Step 5: Unscripted English and collaboration check

Thirty minutes on a product problem with no technical questions at all. Can they disagree clearly? Do they flag risk? Do they ask about users? Written English in India is generally excellent. Spoken clarity in fast meetings varies. Test the thing that will actually cost you time.

What we do differently

We run all of the above before you see a single CV. Our India full-stack pass rate is around 4 percent of applicants. You get 3 to 5 profiles in about 24 hours, each with recorded exercise output and interview notes. If a placement does not work out in the first 14 days, we replace the engineer at no cost.

Time zones and working models

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30. That single fact shapes your operating model.

Your location Overlap with 10am-7pm IST Practical model
London ~4.5 hours Full async plus morning standup
Berlin ~5.5 hours Very comfortable, no shift needed
Dubai ~7.5 hours Effectively same working day
Singapore ~6.5 hours Near-full overlap
New York ~1 hour default Shift to 1pm-10pm IST for 4-5 hours
San Francisco ~0 hours default Shift to 4pm-1am IST, or run async

Three models that work

Aligned European team. No shift required. India morning maps to European morning. This is the easiest configuration and the one we recommend for EU clients.

Partial-shift US East Coast. Engineer works 1pm to 10pm IST. Gives 4 to 5 hours with New York. Most Indian senior engineers accept this readily. Pay a 5 to 10 percent shift premium and retention stays fine.

Async-first with anchor hours. Two fixed overlap hours per day, everything else written. Works well for West Coast clients. Requires real discipline on your side. Detailed tickets, recorded demos, decisions in writing.

What does not work: expecting a full US day from India without acknowledging it. That is a 9pm to 6am IST shift. Attrition follows within four months. We advise clients out of this every time.

Entity, payroll and compliance in India

You have three options for engaging Indian full-stack engineers.

Option 1: Independent contractor

Simplest to start. Direct contract, invoice-based payment, engineer handles their own taxes. Works for short projects and part-time work. Risks: misclassification if the engagement looks like employment, weaker IP assignment, and no ability to offer benefits, which hurts retention on multi-year hires.

Option 2: Employer of Record

A local entity employs the engineer on your behalf. Handles Provident Fund, professional tax, gratuity accrual, TDS deduction and filings, payslips, and statutory leave. Gives you a properly employed engineer with clean IP assignment under Indian law, without incorporating. This is what most of our clients use. Details on our EOR service.

Option 3: Your own Indian entity

A private limited company. Realistic timeline is 6 to 10 weeks including DIN, incorporation, PAN, TAN, GST registration and a local bank account. Ongoing obligations include ROC annual filings, statutory audit and a resident director. Makes sense above roughly 15 to 20 headcount in India.

Factor Contractor EOR Own entity
Setup time Days ~1 week 6-10 weeks
Monthly admin Low None for you High
IP protection Moderate Strong Strong
Benefits possible No Yes Yes
Best for Under 6 months 1-15 hires 15+ hires

Compliance details that matter for full-stack roles

IP assignment must be explicit and governed sensibly. Indian courts enforce well-drafted assignment clauses. Vague language creates risk, especially where an engineer contributed to open source or had prior employment overlap.

Data handling matters too. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act imposes obligations if your product touches Indian users. Full-stack engineers touch personal data constantly, in logs, in staging databases, in error reports. Set access rules and staging data policy before day one.

Common mistakes when hiring full-stack developers in India

Hiring one engineer to cover four specialisms. A full-stack developer is not also your DevOps, your QA and your data engineer. If you need test automation, hire a QA automation engineer. If you need pipelines, hire a data engineer. Overloading a single hire produces a stressed engineer and mediocre output everywhere.

Optimising on hourly rate alone. The gap between a $1,200 and a $4,000 full-stack engineer in India is not 3x cost. It is often 5x output difference and a fraction of the review burden. We have rescued several projects where cheap hires produced code the client had to discard.

Skipping the front-end depth check. Many Indian candidates who label themselves full-stack are back-end engineers who can wire up a form. That is fine if you say so. It is a problem if you assumed they could own the UI.

Interviewing with algorithm puzzles only. LeetCode-style rounds select for interview preparation, which is an industry in India. They tell you almost nothing about whether someone can ship a feature safely.

Moving too slowly. Good candidates hold two or three offers. A four-week process loses them.

Treating a remote pod like an outsourced vendor. Give them product context, user feedback and roadmap visibility. Our best-performing India teams sit in the same Slack channels and standups as everyone else.

Ignoring notice periods. Indian employment contracts frequently carry 60 or 90 day notice. Ask early. Plan start dates accordingly, or target candidates who are already available.

How Second Talent matches for full-stack roles

We operate across 9 Asian markets and have worked with over 200 clients. India is our largest full-stack pool by volume.

Our process

  1. Scoping call, 30 minutes. We pin down the front-end to back-end ratio, your stack, seniority, time zone need and budget band.
  2. Shortlist in about 24 hours. Three to five pre-vetted engineers. Each with exercise output, interview notes and a rate.
  3. You interview. Usually one or two rounds. We handle scheduling across IST.
  4. Onboarding. Contractor or EOR, your choice. We handle the paperwork either way.
  5. First 14 days. If the fit is wrong, we replace at no cost.

There is no upfront fee. You pay when someone starts.

What we screen that most agencies skip

  • Whether "full-stack" on the CV means both halves in production
  • Migration and data-safety instincts, tested directly
  • Spoken English under time pressure, not just written
  • Notice period and counteroffer risk, checked upfront
  • Genuine ownership history versus ticket-taking history

We worked with a Singapore-based B2B SaaS company that had cycled through two freelance marketplaces. Both hires produced code their lead had to rewrite. We placed one senior Bengaluru full-stack engineer on Next.js and Node at $4,200/month. Within a quarter they moved off their internal lead's critical path entirely and added a second engineer from the same shortlist.

Roles that pair well with a full-stack hire

Most teams do not need only full-stack. Common pairings we build:

If you are still mapping which roles you need, start at our engineers in India hub. For cross-market rate comparison, the Asia Tech Salary Index is a useful reference.

Ready to hire

Full-stack engineers in India give you the widest capability per hire in Asia, at roughly a third of US cost. The market is deep. The bottleneck is your process, and screening for both halves of the stack properly.

Tell us your stack, the front-end to back-end split you need, and your time zone. We will send a shortlist of pre-vetted India full-stack engineers in about 24 hours. No upfront cost, EOR available, 14-day replacement guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a full-stack developer in India actually cost in 2026?
Our India full-stack bands run $1,000-$1,800/month for juniors, $1,800-$3,200 mid-level, $2,500-$6,000 senior and $6,000-$9,000 for staff or lead engineers. A comparable US full-stack hire costs $11,000-$18,000/month all in. Most funded startups land senior React plus Node engineers around $3,500-$4,500, depending on Bengaluru versus tier-two city location and product complexity.
How do you vet full-stack engineers rather than just front-end or back-end skills?
We test both halves in one sitting. Candidates build a small feature end to end, a schema change, an API endpoint, a React or Next.js view, plus tests. We review Git history, not just the final commit. Then a systems round covers auth, caching, N+1 queries and deploy strategy. Roughly 4% of applicants clear the full process.
Will Indian full-stack developers overlap with my team's hours?
IST is UTC+5:30. That gives you full overlap with Europe and about 4 to 5 hours with US East Coast if the engineer starts at 1pm IST. Most of our India full-stack hires work 2pm to 10pm IST for US teams. Asia-Pacific and Middle East clients get near-complete overlap without any shift adjustment at all.
Do I need an Indian entity to hire these engineers?
No. You can engage them as contractors or use our Employer of Record in India. Our EOR handles PF, professional tax, gratuity accrual, TDS filing and compliant IP assignment under Indian contract law. Setting up your own private limited company takes 6 to 10 weeks plus ongoing ROC filings. Most clients skip that until headcount passes 15.
What stack should I screen for in the Indian market?
Depth is widest in React, Next.js, Node/TypeScript, Java Spring Boot, Django and Rails, with Postgres, MySQL and MongoDB on the data side. AWS dominates cloud experience, followed by Azure. Docker and GitHub Actions are near-universal at senior level. Kubernetes and Terraform depth is thinner, so screen it explicitly if your infra needs it.
Is English a real risk with Indian full-stack hires?
Rarely at senior level. English is the working language of Indian product engineering, and written communication in PRs and specs is usually strong. The gap we screen for is spoken clarity in live meetings and the habit of flagging blockers early. Every candidate we shortlist has passed a 30-minute unscripted product discussion in English.
