Why companies hire full-stack developers in India
Full-stack roles are the hardest to fill in-house and the easiest to fill well in India. The reason is structural. India has run product engineering for global software companies for over two decades. That created a large population of engineers who own features end to end, from Postgres schema to React component to CI pipeline.
A full-stack hire is a leverage point for small teams. One engineer who can ship a feature without waiting on a front-end handoff moves faster than two specialists. Indian engineers slot into that model naturally, because the Indian startup market itself is full-stack heavy. Product teams at Razorpay, Zerodha, Zoho and thousands of smaller SaaS companies staff generalists by default.
The cost gap is the other half of the story. A senior full-stack engineer in San Francisco runs $11,000-$18,000/month fully loaded. The same skill set in Bengaluru or Pune costs $2,500-$6,000. That is not a quality discount. It reflects local cost of living and currency, not capability.

India produces roughly 1.5 million engineering graduates a year. That number alone is not useful. What matters is where product-grade full-stack experience concentrates.
The main hubs
Bengaluru. The deepest pool by a wide margin. Product companies, unicorn startups, and every major global R&D centre. Best place to find engineers who have owned a service in production at scale. Also the most expensive and the most competitive on counteroffers.
Pune. Strong on Java, Spring Boot and enterprise-grade full-stack work. Slightly lower salary expectations than Bengaluru. Good retention. Many engineers here have deep experience with regulated domains like insurance and banking.
Hyderabad. Heavy Microsoft and Amazon presence shaped the market. Strong .NET and Azure depth alongside the usual React and Node. Growing fast on data and cloud roles too.
NCR, meaning Gurugram and Noida. Consumer product and fintech heavy. Fast-moving engineers used to shipping weekly. Sometimes lighter on testing discipline, so screen for it.
Chennai. Strong fundamentals, good Java and Python depth, historically services-led. Excellent value at mid and senior levels.

The stack to screen for in 2026
Full-stack means different things at different companies. Define it before you interview, or you will waste weeks.
Front end
React dominates. Roughly four in five full-stack candidates we screen in India list React as primary. Next.js adoption is now mainstream at senior level, particularly App Router and server components. Vue is a distinct minority, maybe one in eight. Angular still shows up in enterprise and Pune-based candidates.
What to actually test: state management choices, why they picked Zustand or Redux Toolkit or React Query, and whether they understand rendering strategy. Many candidates can build a component. Fewer can explain when to use SSR versus static generation versus client fetching.
Back end
Three clusters lead the Indian market:
- Node and TypeScript. Express, NestJS, Fastify. Strongest among startup-trained engineers. Best fit if you want one language across the stack.

Rails and .NET are smaller but present. PHP with Laravel is common at lower price points and in agency backgrounds.
Data layer
Postgres is the default choice for new builds. MySQL is everywhere in existing systems. MongoDB is very common, sometimes used where relational would be better, so probe the reasoning. Redis for caching and queues is near-universal at senior level.
The skill that separates good from great: query performance. Ask a candidate to describe a slow query they fixed. Weak answers stop at "I added an index". Strong answers involve EXPLAIN output, cardinality, connection pooling, and N+1 patterns in the ORM.

AI-adjacent expectations
By 2026, most full-stack briefs we receive include some AI surface. Chat interfaces, embeddings search, LLM-backed workflows. A strong Indian full-stack engineer can wire up an OpenAI or Anthropic API, handle streaming responses, and build retrieval with pgvector. That is different from model work. What moves a number inside a band
- Location. Bengaluru senior sits high in band. Tier-two sits low.
- Stack scarcity. Next.js plus strong TypeScript plus AWS commands a premium. Generic PHP does not.
- Domain experience. Fintech, healthcare and payments experience adds 10 to 20 percent.
- Product company background. Engineers from product companies price above services-firm backgrounds, usually justifiably.
- English fluency in live settings. Real premium, because it determines how much of your team's time they save.

A note on counteroffers
The Indian market is liquid. Good full-stack engineers get counteroffered. If your process takes five weeks, you will lose candidates. We keep our loop to 7 to 12 days for this reason. Speed is a hiring feature, not a nicety.
How to interview and vet full-stack engineers in India
Most failed India hires we clean up came from a bad process, not a bad market. Here is what works.
Step 1: Define the split before you screen
Write down the actual ratio. Is this 70 percent back end and 30 percent UI? Or an even split? Or mostly front end with API work? Candidates who look identical on paper differ enormously here. A "full-stack" engineer from a React-heavy startup is not interchangeable with one from a Spring Boot shop.
Step 2: Screen the resume for ownership signals
Look for:
- Named products they built, not just technologies listed
- Tenure of 18 months or more in at least two roles
- Evidence of production ownership, on-call, incident handling
- Git or open source activity where available
Red flags: a 20-technology skills list with no depth anywhere, three jobs in two years without explanation, or certifications standing in for shipped work.
Step 3: Run a real end-to-end exercise
We use a scoped 90-minute build. Add a field to an existing model, expose it via an endpoint, render and edit it in the UI, write one test. It is deliberately unglamorous. It reveals everything.

Step 4: Systems and tradeoffs conversation
Forty-five minutes, no whiteboard theatre. Take a real feature from your product. Ask them to design it aloud. Push on auth, caching, background jobs, failure modes and rollout. You are testing judgement, not recall.
A good question we use often: "Your endpoint got 10x traffic overnight and latency tripled. Walk me through the first hour." Strong candidates start with observability, not with code.
Step 5: Unscripted English and collaboration check
Thirty minutes on a product problem with no technical questions at all. Can they disagree clearly? Do they flag risk? Do they ask about users? Written English in India is generally excellent. Spoken clarity in fast meetings varies. Test the thing that will actually cost you time.

Three models that work
Aligned European team. No shift required. India morning maps to European morning. This is the easiest configuration and the one we recommend for EU clients.
Partial-shift US East Coast. Engineer works 1pm to 10pm IST. Gives 4 to 5 hours with New York. Most Indian senior engineers accept this readily. Pay a 5 to 10 percent shift premium and retention stays fine.
Async-first with anchor hours. Two fixed overlap hours per day, everything else written. Works well for West Coast clients. Requires real discipline on your side. Detailed tickets, recorded demos, decisions in writing.
What does not work: expecting a full US day from India without acknowledging it. That is a 9pm to 6am IST shift. Attrition follows within four months. We advise clients out of this every time.
Entity, payroll and compliance in India
You have three options for engaging Indian full-stack engineers.
Option 1: Independent contractor
Simplest to start. Direct contract, invoice-based payment, engineer handles their own taxes. Works for short projects and part-time work. Risks: misclassification if the engagement looks like employment, weaker IP assignment, and no ability to offer benefits, which hurts retention on multi-year hires.
Option 2: Employer of Record
A local entity employs the engineer on your behalf. Handles Provident Fund, professional tax, gratuity accrual, TDS deduction and filings, payslips, and statutory leave. Option 3: Your own Indian entity
A private limited company. Realistic timeline is 6 to 10 weeks including DIN, incorporation, PAN, TAN, GST registration and a local bank account. Ongoing obligations include ROC annual filings, statutory audit and a resident director. Makes sense above roughly 15 to 20 headcount in India.

Compliance details that matter for full-stack roles
IP assignment must be explicit and governed sensibly. Indian courts enforce well-drafted assignment clauses. Vague language creates risk, especially where an engineer contributed to open source or had prior employment overlap.
Data handling matters too. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act imposes obligations if your product touches Indian users. Full-stack engineers touch personal data constantly, in logs, in staging databases, in error reports. Set access rules and staging data policy before day one.
Common mistakes when hiring full-stack developers in India
Hiring one engineer to cover four specialisms. A full-stack developer is not also your DevOps, your QA and your data engineer. If you need test automation, hire a QA automation engineer. If you need pipelines, hire a data engineer. Overloading a single hire produces a stressed engineer and mediocre output everywhere.
Optimising on hourly rate alone. The gap between a $1,200 and a $4,000 full-stack engineer in India is not 3x cost. It is often 5x output difference and a fraction of the review burden. We have rescued several projects where cheap hires produced code the client had to discard.
Skipping the front-end depth check. Many Indian candidates who label themselves full-stack are back-end engineers who can wire up a form. That is fine if you say so. It is a problem if you assumed they could own the UI.
Interviewing with algorithm puzzles only. LeetCode-style rounds select for interview preparation, which is an industry in India. They tell you almost nothing about whether someone can ship a feature safely.
Moving too slowly. Good candidates hold two or three offers. A four-week process loses them.
Treating a remote pod like an outsourced vendor. Give them product context, user feedback and roadmap visibility. Our best-performing India teams sit in the same Slack channels and standups as everyone else.
Ignoring notice periods. Indian employment contracts frequently carry 60 or 90 day notice. Ask early. Plan start dates accordingly, or target candidates who are already available.
