Quick Overview: Software developers in India earn between ₹4.5 LPA and ₹90 LPA in 2026, a spread wider than any other market in Asia. International clients typically pay $18 to $40 per hour for standard development roles, rising to $55 to $80 for leads and scarce specialisms. Through Second Talent, senior engineers cost $3,500 to $6,000 a month all in.
Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Delhi NCR and Mumbai hold the deepest pools. The single biggest predictor of pay is not years of experience, it is company type: an IT services fresher starts near ₹3.5 LPA while a product company fresher starts at ₹12 LPA or above. The national median sits near ₹8 to ₹9 LPA, which tells you very little on its own. India’s salary distribution has two peaks rather than one, and the gap between them is the whole story. Read the bands above as the range a competent engineer commands, then use the company-type section below to work out where a specific candidate actually sits.
Indian salaries are quoted annually in lakhs per annum. One lakh is ₹100,000, so ₹25 LPA is ₹2.5 million a year, roughly ₹2,08,000 a month before tax.

Factors Affecting Software Developer Rates in India
Key Market Insights for 2026
- Company type beats years of experience: A fresher at an IT services firm starts near ₹3.5 to ₹5 LPA. A fresher at a product company starts at ₹12 to ₹22 LPA. The same two people five years later are ₹15 LPA and ₹45 LPA apart. When you read a CV, the employer names tell you more about the price than the dates do.
- AI and cloud specialisms carry a 30 to 50 percent premium: Engineers with GenAI and LLM application work, cloud-native architecture on AWS, GCP or Azure, or genuine distributed systems experience price well above generalist profiles. More than two million professionals in India have been upskilled in AI, with 200,000 to 300,000 at an advanced level, so the claim is common and the depth is not.
- The GCC effect sets the floor: India hosts more than 1,800 global capability centres, close to half the world total. They pay above local market to hold talent, which lifts the floor for everyone else in the same city. Budget against GCC pay, not against services pay, if you want to hire the same people they do.
- Headcount growth has slowed while revenue has not: The sector reached about $315 billion in FY26 revenue, up 6.1 percent, while headcount rose only 2.3 percent to roughly 5.95 million. That gap is AI productivity showing up in the numbers, and it means the market now competes hardest for engineers who can direct AI output rather than produce volume.
- Notice periods change your timeline: Thirty to ninety days is normal and ninety is standard at large enterprises. Ask in the first screen and build it into the start date rather than discovering it at offer stage.
- Counteroffers are part of the process: Indian employers frequently counter a resignation with a 25 to 40 percent raise. Move quickly through your stages, close cleanly, and stay in contact through the notice period.
Services Track vs Product Track
This is the distinction that decides what you pay and what you get, and it is invisible if you only read job titles.
The services track covers the large IT outsourcing firms. Engineers here are used to defined scope, client-side specifications and process. They are cheaper, more available, and generally excellent at executing work someone else has designed.
The product track covers product companies, funded startups and global capability centres. Engineers here own outcomes rather than tickets, argue about architecture, and cost two to three times more. If your brief needs someone to decide what to build as well as build it, this is the track you are hiring from, and the services rate card will not get you there.
Neither track is better. Hiring the wrong one for the brief is the mistake, and it is the most common one we see clients make in this market.
Hiring Software Developers in India
Employing someone in India properly involves more than a bank transfer. Statutory items include Employees’ Provident Fund contributions, ESIC at eligible salary levels, gratuity accrual after five years of service, state professional tax, monthly TDS with an annual Form 16, and Shops and Establishments registration in the relevant state. Rules differ by state, so Karnataka and Maharashtra are not identical.
Paying a full-time engineer as a contractor against invoices creates misclassification exposure and potential permanent establishment risk. Indian authorities look at substance rather than paperwork. Our Employer of Record service makes us the legal employer, runs compliant payroll in INR, handles provident fund and tax filings, and issues proper contracts with real notice terms. No Indian subsidiary and no six-month incorporation timeline.
Through Second Talent, senior engineers in India cost $3,500 to $6,000 a month all in, against $135,000 to $180,000 a year for a comparable United States hire. You can browse available profiles on our India engineering hub, or go straight to a specialism such as full-stack developers or Python engineers.
Freelance vs Full-Time Rates
Freelance rates run 20 to 40 percent above the equivalent full-time hourly cost, which is the normal premium for carrying your own bench risk, tax and downtime. For a defined project with a clear end date, that premium is usually worth paying.
For anything continuing, full-time employment through an Employer of Record works out cheaper and holds the person for longer. The break-even in this market sits at roughly four to six months of continuous work. Past that point the freelance premium stops buying flexibility and starts buying nothing.
2026 Market Outlook
Expect the top of every band to keep rising and the bottom to stay flat. AI has absorbed a meaningful share of the entry-level work that used to justify large bench teams, which is why sector headcount grew 2.3 percent while revenue grew 6.1 percent. Engineers who can specify, review and correct AI output are scarce and priced accordingly. Engineers whose value was volume are not.
For buyers, this is a better market than the headline numbers suggest. The people you actually want are more available than they were two years ago, because the companies hoarding them have slowed hiring. The people you do not want are cheaper than ever, which is exactly the trap.
