What moves an engineer up a band
Three things reliably push a candidate to the top of their range. Production Kubernetes at meaningful scale, meaning 50 or more services rather than a single cluster running three pods. Real infrastructure-as-code discipline, with modules, remote state, and drift detection. And demonstrated cost work, where they can name a percentage they cut off a cloud bill.
Certifications matter less than most buyers assume. A CKA or AWS Solutions Architect Professional is a decent filter signal. It does not predict whether someone can debug a CrashLoopBackOff at 2am.

Bengaluru is the default answer but not always the right one. If your requirement is Azure DevOps pipelines and AKS, Hyderabad often produces better matches faster. If you need someone who has run infrastructure inside an Indian bank or NBFC, Chennai and Mumbai are stronger.
Remote-first hiring across tier-two cities has changed the calculus since 2021. We now place engineers from Indore, Coimbatore, and Bhubaneswar who work fully remote for global teams. Pipeline and release engineer. Owns CI/CD, build times, artifact management, release safety. Screen on GitHub Actions or GitLab CI, caching strategy, and rollback design.
Platform engineer. Builds the internal developer platform. Screen on Kubernetes, Helm, ArgoCD or Flux, Terraform module design, and self-service tooling.
Site reliability engineer. Owns SLOs, error budgets, incident response. Screen on observability, alert design, and postmortem quality.

Jenkins still appears on a majority of Indian DevOps resumes. That is not a negative. Someone who has maintained a 300-job Jenkins instance understands failure modes that GitHub Actions users have never met. But do check whether they have migrated a pipeline, not just kept one alive.
Python is the most common scripting language, which makes India's DevOps pool overlap nicely with our Python developers in India. Go is rarer and commands a premium, especially for engineers writing Kubernetes operators.
The AI infrastructure crossover
A growing share of DevOps briefs we receive in 2026 involve GPU workloads, model serving, and inference cost control. If your roadmap includes that, screen for Kubernetes GPU scheduling, vLLM or Triton deployment, and vector database operations. Some candidates sit genuinely between disciplines. How to interview and vet DevOps engineers
Algorithm interviews are close to useless here. A DevOps engineer who cannot reverse a binary tree may still be the best hire you make this year. Test the actual work.
A four-stage process that works
Stage 1: Screen on evidence, 20 minutes. Ask for three numbers. Deployment frequency before and after their work. Change failure rate. Mean time to recovery. Candidates who cannot produce any metrics have usually been ticket-takers rather than owners.
Stage 2: Live debugging, 60 minutes. Give them a broken environment. A Helm chart that fails to install. A pod stuck in ImagePullBackOff with a private registry. A Terraform plan that wants to destroy a database. Watch how they narrow the problem. Good engineers read logs before guessing. They check kubectl describe before restarting things.
Stage 3: Design discussion, 45 minutes. Ask them to design the deploy path for a 20-service application across dev, staging, and production. Look for blast radius thinking, environment parity, secrets handling, and a rollback story. Push on trade-offs. If they say "we would use GitOps" without explaining why, dig deeper.
Stage 4: Incident simulation, 30 minutes. Present a scenario. Latency is up 400%, error rate is climbing, a deploy went out 20 minutes ago. What do you do first? The correct instinct is almost always to stop the bleeding, then investigate. Candidates who start theorising about root cause before rolling back are a risk.
Red flags specific to this market
The Indian market has a large services-company base. That produces excellent engineers and also produces resumes inflated by tool lists. Watch for these.
Tool name-dropping with no depth. Ask what version of Kubernetes, which ingress controller, how many nodes. Vague answers mean shallow exposure.
No production on-call experience. Someone who has never been paged has never learned the lessons that matter most.
Only greenfield work. Migration and cleanup are harder than building fresh. Ask about the worst legacy system they inherited.
Inflated titles. "DevOps Architect" with four years of experience is common. Ignore the title and probe the scope.

For DevOps specifically, the on-call design matters more than the standup time. Three models work.
Follow-the-sun. India covers your night. Alerts fired at 2am your time get a human within minutes. This is the strongest argument for hiring in India rather than nearshore. It requires solid runbooks and clear escalation paths.
Shifted overlap. The engineer works 2pm to 10pm IST to cover US mornings. We see acceptance on this when it comes with a 10-15% premium and a firm no-weekend rule. Do not assume it is free.
Standard IST with async handoff. The engineer works 10am to 7pm IST. Handoff notes go into Slack at end of day. This works fine for platform and pipeline work where incidents are rare. It does not work if you need 24-hour incident coverage from one engineer.
Whatever you choose, document it in the contract. Ambiguity about on-call expectations is the single most common cause of early attrition we see in DevOps placements.
Entity, payroll, and compliance in India
You have three legal paths to employ a DevOps engineer in India.
Set up an entity. A private limited company or branch office. Expect 8 to 14 weeks, ongoing statutory filings, a resident director requirement, and real accounting overhead. Worth it above roughly 20 employees in country.
Contractor agreement. Fast and simple. The risk is misclassification. An engineer who works your hours, uses your systems, and has no other clients looks like an employee to Indian authorities. For DevOps, there is an added issue. Contractors holding root cloud credentials with weak IP assignment clauses is a security and legal exposure you do not want.

Compliance details worth knowing
Provident Fund is mandatory for most employees, at 12% employer and 12% employee contribution on basic salary. ESI applies below a wage threshold. Gratuity accrues after five years of service. Notice periods in Indian tech typically run 30 to 90 days, and senior engineers often owe 60 or 90 days to their current employer. Budget for that in your start date planning.
For DevOps hires, add three contract clauses. Full IP assignment covering scripts, modules, and internal tooling. An explicit credentials and access policy. Data residency also matters. If you handle Indian user data, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act imposes obligations your infrastructure engineer needs to understand. Screen for it if it applies to you.
Common hiring mistakes
Hiring one DevOps engineer to fix a cultural problem. If your developers refuse to own their services, a single hire becomes a ticket queue. Decide first whether you want a platform team or an operations team. The interview looks different for each.
Optimising purely for the lowest rate. A $1,200/month junior who misconfigures an S3 bucket or leaves a security group open to the world costs more than the $2,000 you saved. Infrastructure mistakes compound. Pay for judgement.
Skipping the hands-on assessment. DevOps resumes are the easiest in tech to inflate. Tool lists are cheap. A 60-minute live debugging session filters more effectively than three conversational interviews.
Ignoring writing quality. DevOps output is heavily documentation. Runbooks, postmortems, architecture decision records. An engineer who cannot write clearly will leave your team dependent on them personally. Ask for a writing sample.
