Why companies hire cloud engineers in India
Cloud work is one of the few engineering functions that genuinely does not need to sit in your office. Infrastructure is code, reviewed in pull requests, deployed through pipelines. The artifacts are text files and dashboards. That makes India a natural place to build cloud capacity.
The volume argument matters too. India runs a large share of the world's managed cloud operations. Every major hyperscaler has engineering and support centres there. AWS has significant presence in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Microsoft runs deep Azure teams in Hyderabad and Noida. Google Cloud builds in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Add the global capability centres of banks, retailers, and healthcare firms, and you get tens of thousands of engineers who have migrated real production workloads.
Cost is the third reason, and it is substantial. A senior cloud engineer in India costs roughly a quarter to a third of a US equivalent. That is not a quality discount. It reflects local cost of living and a much larger supply of trained engineers.
We placed a cloud engineer with a Series B logistics platform in Amsterdam last year. Their AWS bill was $71,000 a month with no tagging strategy and no reserved capacity. India's cloud ecosystem and where the engineers are
The talent is not evenly spread. Each hub has a different flavour, and that changes who you should target.
Bengaluru
The deepest and most expensive pool. Bengaluru is where product companies and well funded startups sit. Engineers here have usually worked on multi-account AWS Organizations, EKS at real scale, and platform teams that serve internal developers. Expect the top end of our salary bands. Also expect more competing offers, so move fast on candidates you like.
Hyderabad
Strongest Azure and Google Cloud concentration in India. Microsoft and Google both run large campuses there, and the surrounding ecosystem trained around them. If your stack is Azure, Hyderabad should be your first search. Rates run maybe 10 to 15 percent below Bengaluru for equivalent experience.
Pune
A quieter market with excellent enterprise infrastructure engineers. Many have come through banking and insurance GCCs, so they understand change control, audit trails, and regulated environments. Good fit if you handle payments, health data, or anything with a compliance review.
Chennai
Strong in networking, virtualisation, and hybrid cloud. Historically a hardware and telecom hub. Engineers here often have genuine on-premise to cloud migration experience, which is rarer than you think among younger cloud talent.
NCR, Delhi, Gurugram, Noida
Mixed pool. Plenty of consulting-trained engineers and a growing product scene. Retention needs more attention here because job hopping is common.
Ahmedabad, Indore, Coimbatore, Kochi
Tier-two cities with real upside. Rates drop 20 to 30 percent versus Bengaluru. Retention is noticeably better because remote roles paying international-adjacent salaries are scarce locally. The trade-off is a thinner pool at staff level.

The skills and stack to screen for
"Cloud engineer" is a loose title in India. Some candidates are really infrastructure operators. Others are architects who have not touched a terminal in two years. Screen on artifacts, not labels.
Core competencies that actually predict performance
Networking fundamentals. VPC design, CIDR planning, route tables, NAT, private link and endpoint services, transit gateway or hub-and-spoke topology in Azure. Weak networking is the single most common gap. Ask a candidate to design connectivity between three accounts and an on-premise site. The answer tells you a lot in five minutes.
Identity and access. IAM roles versus users, assume-role patterns, permission boundaries, OIDC federation for CI runners, Azure managed identities. Anyone still handing out long-lived access keys is a risk.
Infrastructure as code. Terraform is the default in India. Look for module authorship, remote state with locking, workspace or directory-per-environment strategy, and drift handling. Pulumi and CDK appear in newer teams. CloudFormation shows up in older AWS estates.
Kubernetes. EKS, AKS, or GKE. Screen for node group management, ingress controllers, HPA and cluster autoscaler or Karpenter, RBAC, and network policy. Ask about a pod that will not schedule. Ask how they'd upgrade a cluster with zero downtime.
Observability. Prometheus and Grafana, Datadog, CloudWatch, OpenTelemetry. Good candidates talk about SLOs and error budgets, not just dashboards.
Cost management. FinOps is where Indian cloud engineers can pay for themselves. Reserved instances and savings plans, Spot strategies, Graviton migration, storage lifecycle policies, tag governance.
Security and compliance. Encryption at rest and in transit, KMS key policies, secrets management with Vault or AWS Secrets Manager, CIS benchmarks, guardrails via SCPs or Azure Policy.

A useful test for senior candidates. Ask what they would delete from their current infrastructure. Strong engineers have opinions about accumulated complexity. Weaker ones only add.

What moves a candidate up or down the band
Certifications matter more in India than in most markets, because they are widely pursued. AWS Solutions Architect Professional, DevOps Engineer Professional, and Certified Kubernetes Administrator all add real premium. Treat them as a floor signal, not proof of skill.
Multi-cloud experience adds 10 to 20 percent. Genuine multi-cloud, not one Azure tutorial. Kubernetes at production scale adds a similar amount. FinOps track record with documented savings can add more, because the return is measurable.
Current employer matters. Engineers leaving product companies and hyperscalers price above those leaving services firms. That gap is often justified, though not always. Some of the best infrastructure engineers we place come from GCCs where they ran genuinely large estates.
City matters, as the hub table shows. So does the pay structure. Indian compensation typically splits into fixed, variable, and retention components. When you quote a number, be clear it is all cash. Candidates compare total cash, not base.

How to interview and vet cloud engineers
Standard coding interviews are the wrong tool here. Cloud engineers are not primarily writing algorithms. Test the work they will actually do.
A four-stage process that works
Stage one, 20 minutes, screening. Confirm hands-on depth. What did you build in the last six months. Which parts did you personally write. What broke and how did you find out. Anyone who only speaks in the passive voice about team achievements needs harder questions.
Stage two, 60 minutes, architecture and troubleshooting. Give them a scenario. A three-tier application on AWS, one environment, single account, deployed by hand. Ask them to design the target state. Watch how they sequence the migration. Then break something. "Users report 502s from the ALB, the target group is healthy, what do you check."
Stage three, take-home or live pairing, 2 to 3 hours. Write a Terraform module for a reusable ECS service or an AKS node pool. Include variables, outputs, and a README. Keep it small and paid if possible. Review the module structure, not the syntax. Does it hardcode account IDs. Does it handle multiple environments.
Stage four, 45 minutes, operational maturity. Talk about incidents. Ask for a postmortem they wrote. Ask about on-call rotations, alert fatigue, and a time they made a change that caused an outage. Honest answers here correlate strongly with people you want on your infrastructure.
Red flags we screen out
Dashboard-only experience, where the candidate has clicked through consoles but never written IaC. Certification stacking with no production evidence. Inability to explain a subnet. Vague answers about who owned what. Claiming multi-cloud without being able to compare IAM models. Resume tools that appear nowhere in their stories.
Our own funnel rejects roughly 97 percent of applicants for cloud roles. Most fail on networking depth or on the Terraform task. We keep the ones who can design, build, and then explain their reasoning.

Most cloud engineers we place in India are comfortable shifting to a 1pm to 10pm IST window for US teams. Many have done it before in GCC roles. Be explicit about the expectation in the job description, and pay a shift allowance if the window runs late.
On-call
Cloud engineers carry pagers. Discuss this early. Indian engineers are generally used to rotations, often more so than Western hires. What they want is fairness. A defined rotation, compensation for out-of-hours pages, and a real effort to reduce noisy alerts. We have seen more placements fail over undefined on-call than over salary.
Async discipline
The teams that get the most from India-based cloud engineers write things down. Architecture decision records. Runbooks in the repo. Terraform plans posted to pull requests. Incident channels with timestamps. If your infrastructure knowledge lives in one person's head, distributed hiring will expose that quickly.
Entity, payroll, and compliance in India
You have three ways to employ someone in India.
Set up your own entity. A private limited company or a branch office. Realistic timeline is three to six months including PAN, TAN, GST where applicable, and provident fund registration. Ongoing cost includes accounting, statutory filings, and annual audit. It makes sense above roughly 15 to 20 employees.
Engage as an independent contractor. Fast and simple. Also risky for full-time roles. Indian authorities look at control, exclusivity, and duration. A contractor who works your hours, uses your systems, and has no other clients looks like an employee. Misclassification exposes you to back-dated PF, gratuity, and penalties.
Use an Employer of Record. We employ the engineer in India through our EOR and invoice you monthly. That covers Employees' Provident Fund, Employees' State Insurance where applicable, professional tax by state, gratuity accrual after five years, TDS deduction and filing, and a compliant employment contract with IP assignment under Indian law.
Practical compliance notes
Notice periods in India are long. Thirty days is common, sixty to ninety at larger enterprises. Build that into your timeline. A candidate who accepts in week three may start in week twelve.
Buyout of notice happens and is negotiable. Sometimes the new employer covers it. Decide your policy before you make offers.
IP assignment must be written into the employment agreement, not bolted on later. Our contracts handle this. If you go direct, get Indian counsel to review.
Data residency may apply to you. Indian rules on personal data are tightening, and sector regulators like the RBI have their own requirements for payment data. If your engineers will touch regulated data, define which regions and accounts they can access before day one.
Equipment and access. Ship a company laptop with disk encryption and MDM. Do not let production credentials sit on a personal machine. Use SSO with hardware keys for anything touching your cloud root or management accounts.
Common hiring mistakes
Hiring an architect when you need a builder. Many senior Indian candidates come from consulting backgrounds where the job was slides and designs. Early-stage teams need engineers who write Terraform on Tuesday. Ask what they shipped, personally, last month.
Anchoring on the cheapest rate. A $1,200 cloud engineer will cost you more than a $4,000 one if they misconfigure a security group. Infrastructure mistakes are expensive and slow to surface. Pay for judgement at the senior level, then add junior capacity underneath.
Skipping the practical task. Interviews reward articulate candidates. Terraform tasks reward competent ones. The overlap is imperfect. We have rejected candidates who interviewed brilliantly and produced modules with hardcoded secrets.
Hiring one engineer to do everything. Cloud, DevOps, security, and data platform work are related but distinct. One person cannot own all four for a team of thirty developers. Sequence your hires. Start with cloud infrastructure, then add Python developers or back-end engineers as the platform stabilises.
Ignoring counter-offers. Indian employers frequently counter, sometimes aggressively. Move fast, keep candidates warm through notice, and expect a retention attempt in week one of the notice period.
Treating the hire as a vendor. Give access, context, and ownership. Cloud engineers who cannot merge without three approvals will disengage within a quarter.
No onboarding plan for infrastructure. Day one should include read access to accounts, the architecture diagram, and last quarter's incident list. We have seen strong hires idle for three weeks waiting for permissions.
