Three reasons come up in almost every kickoff call we run.
The first is volume with real depth. India produces more Python developers each year than any other country, and Python is now the entry language in most Indian computer science programmes. That matters because the pipeline is not only large, it is consistent. Engineers arrive already fluent in virtual environments, pytest, type hints and Git workflows.
The second is production experience at scale. Indian product companies run Python in demanding conditions. Trading platforms handle millions of orders during market open. Since 2020, a large share of Indian Python engineers work remotely for companies in another city or another country. We now place engineers based in Kochi into Bengaluru-grade roles regularly. What changed is that the strongest tier-2 engineers no longer need to relocate, so they stay in cheaper cities on competitive pay. "Python developer" describes at least four different jobs in India. Decide which one you are hiring before you write the job description.
This is the largest segment. Screen for Django with Django REST Framework, or FastAPI with Pydantic v2. Look for SQLAlchemy 2.0 patterns, Alembic migrations, Celery or RQ for background work, and Redis for caching and locks. Ask about gunicorn and uvicorn worker configuration. Ask how they handle idempotency when a webhook fires twice. Strong candidates talk about database indexes and query plans without prompting. If you need frontend coverage too, compare against full-stack developers in India or a dedicated back-end hire.
Here the stack is pandas or Polars, PySpark, Apache Airflow or Dagster, Kafka, and a warehouse such as Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift. Screen for partitioning strategy, backfill safety and schema evolution. A good question is how they would reprocess three months of late-arriving events without double counting. Many Indian engineers have deep Airflow experience from global capability centre work. If the role is mostly pipelines, look at data engineers in India instead.
Demand here grew faster than any other Python segment in India. The stack is the OpenAI or Anthropic SDK, LangChain or LlamaIndex, pgvector or Qdrant, PyTorch and Hugging Face transformers for anything custom. Every Python role now touches infrastructure. Expect Docker, Kubernetes basics, Terraform exposure, GitHub Actions or GitLab CI, and observability with Sentry and OpenTelemetry. Four factors do most of the work. Production AI or LLM experience adds 15 to 30 percent, because that market is tight. Deep Postgres and distributed systems experience adds 10 to 20 percent. Regulated domain knowledge in payments, lending or healthcare adds a premium because compliance context takes months to teach. Client-facing English fluency adds another layer when the role involves daily stakeholder calls.

Ask when they would choose asyncio over Celery, and when neither fits. Ask how they found and fixed an N+1 query in a Django ORM view. Ask how they ship a column rename on a 200 million row Postgres table without downtime. Ask what happens when a Celery task retries after partially writing to the database. Ask how they profiled a memory leak in a long-running worker. Each of these has a lived answer and a textbook answer, and the difference is obvious.
The common ones are resumes listing every Python framework in existence, candidates who cannot describe how their code reached production, vague answers about current notice periods, and camera-off requests during technical rounds. We also check for undisclosed dual employment, which remains a real issue in the Indian remote market. Our screens are always camera-on and identity verified.

Employing in India properly involves more than a bank transfer. Statutory items include Employees' Provident Fund contributions, ESIC for eligible salary levels, gratuity accrual after five years of service, state professional tax, monthly TDS deduction with annual Form 16 issuance, and Shops and Establishments registration in the relevant state. State rules differ, so Karnataka and Maharashtra are not identical.
Many companies start by paying engineers as contractors on invoices. For genuine project work that is fine. For a full-time engineer working your hours on your systems, it creates misclassification exposure and potential permanent establishment risk. Indian authorities look at substance over paperwork.
