TL;DR: AI engineers in Indonesia earn $4,540 to $10,210+ a month working for international clients on our rate card, the highest range of five markets compared, and we shortlist 6-8 candidates within 24 hours. The closest US benchmark, the BLS median for software developers, was $135,980 a year in May 2025.
Sahabat-AI's 70-billion-parameter model, built by GoTo with AI Singapore, handles English, Indonesian, Javanese, Sundanese, Batak Toba and Balinese. An AI engineer from Indonesia should be able to explain why a product for Indonesian users needs more than one language in its eval set.
Key takeaways
- Indonesia's Personal Data Protection Law gives a data controller 3 x 24 hours to send written notice of a breach.
- The same law requires an impact assessment before automated decisions with legal or significant effects on individuals.
- A 5 pm to 2 am shift in Jakarta gives a New York team six live hours while US daylight time lasts.
- Under Indonesian copyright law, code written on commission stays with the engineer unless a contract says otherwise.

US Pay Benchmark for AI Engineers
No federal pay series carries the AI engineer title. The role maps to Software Developers (SOC 15-1252), because an engineer who wires retrieval, agents and model calls into a product is writing production software.

Time Zone Overlap: Jakarta Against ET, CT and PT
Jakarta sits 11 hours ahead of New York in September and 12 after 1 November. An eval sweep an engineer starts at 9 am in Jakarta begins at 10 pm the night before in New York, and results can be waiting when your team logs on.
Jakarta keeps Western Indonesian Time (WIB), UTC+7, all year. US daylight time runs from 8 March to 1 November 2026, per NIST. The arithmetic: 9:00 am CDT (UTC-5) is 14:00 UTC, and 14:00 UTC is 9:00 pm in Jakarta. Under CST (UTC-6) the same call lands at 10:00 pm.

Each shift is nine clock hours with a meal break, counted against a 9 am to 5 pm US day.
The 5 pm to 2 am row suits most AI teams: live hours for design reviews and incident calls, then training or eval jobs that run while Jakarta sleeps. The last column matters for employees. Article 76 of the Manpower Law requires an employer of women working between 11 pm and 7 am to provide nutritious food and drink and keep the workplace secure. Women working between 11 pm and 5 am also get transport.
Calls tacked onto a day shift count as overtime, which the Job Creation Law caps at 4 hours a day and 18 a week, with the worker's consent and overtime pay. We fix the shift before the offer, which is how our placements get 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.
AI Engineer Skills to Screen For

Indonesia appears on the supported-country lists for Anthropic, OpenAI's API and Google's Gemini API, so an engineer in Jakarta can build on hosted models within those terms. Access is the easy part. The five areas below test language coverage, serving and Indonesia's data law.
Evals across Indonesian and regional languages
IndoMMLU holds 14,981 questions across 64 tasks, gathered with professional teachers. Of those, 46% test the Indonesian language or nine local languages and cultures. GPT-3.5 passed only the primary school level. Hand the candidate a support dataset mixing Indonesian, Javanese and English. Score whether they report results per language, since an average can hide a failure in one of them.
Serving an open-weight 70B model
The Sahabat-AI model card says the 70B model needs about 140 GB of VRAM in FP16 or BF16. It recommends four NVIDIA L40s or two H100s and supports a 128k context. It ships under the Llama 3.1 Community License.
Ask the candidate when they would serve that model, quantise it, or call a hosted API instead, and what each choice does to cost per thousand requests.
Automated decisions under the PDP Law
Indonesia's Personal Data Protection Law (Law 27 of 2022) reaches processing outside Indonesia that has legal effect inside the country or on Indonesian citizens abroad (Article 2). Article 10 lets individuals object to decisions based solely on automated processing, including profiling.
Article 34 requires an impact assessment for high-risk processing. Its list includes automated decisions with legal or significant effects, large-scale processing and new technology. Ask the candidate to sketch the assessment for a credit-scoring feature.
Breach notice and data transfers
Article 46 gives a data controller 3 x 24 hours to notify affected individuals and the agency the law sets up, in writing, when personal data protection fails. Article 56 allows transfers abroad when the receiving country offers equal or higher protection, when binding safeguards exist, or with consent. Administrative fines reach 2% of annual revenue (Article 57).
Run a drill: a retrieval index returns another customer's records. Ask who the candidate tells first and which logs prove what leaked.
Output a reviewer can trust
In Stack Overflow's 2025 survey, 66% of developers named "AI solutions that are almost right, but not quite" as a frustration, and 3.1% highly trusted AI output. Ask the candidate for the eval that caught their last near-miss, and how they gate a prompt change before it reaches production.
Contractor or Employer of Record in Indonesia
Software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire" under 17 U.S.C. § 101, and a transfer must be in writing and signed under § 204(a). IRS Publication 515 says the place where services are performed determines the source of the income. A foreign individual gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status.
Indonesia's Copyright Law (Law 28 of 2014) protects computer programs and compilations of data (Article 40). Article 36 names the maker of a work created on commission or in employment as its author and copyright holder unless the parties agree otherwise, and Article 16 lets copyright pass by written agreement. List pipelines, prompts, eval sets and fine-tuned weights in the assignment.
Article 1 of the Manpower Law names three elements of an employment relation: job, wages and work orders. A monthly-paid engineer working your sprint board fits all three on their face.
The Job Creation Law requires employers to put a fixed-term contract in writing, in Indonesian and Latin script. If a bilingual version conflicts, the Indonesian text prevails.
Our Employer of Record service employs the engineer through a local entity, and our Indonesia EOR page covers the details. This is a summary, not legal advice.

English Level and Working Norms in Indonesia
Indonesia's research and development job-function score on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025 is 556. Its IT score is 523, and both sit above the national score of 471. That national score ranks 80th of 123 countries and regions against a global average of 488, per EF's Indonesia page.
Speaking is the weakest skill at 447, and reading the strongest at 491. AI work runs on written artefacts: design docs, eval reports, model cards. Ask finalists to write a one-page eval report in English, then defend one of its trade-offs live.
Plan model releases around Nyepi and Idul Fitri. In February 2026 the Manpower Ministry issued Circular M/2/HK.04/II/2026 on work from anywhere for company workers during the Nyepi and Idul Fitri holidays. Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026 is a working day in Indonesia, so an engineer there can run an eval cycle while your US team is off.
AI Engineer Hiring Process in Indonesia

Second Talent's vetting covers stages 2 to 5 before you see a profile.
Stage 1: Define what the hire owns
You name the product surface, the hosted or open-weight models in use, the languages your users write in and the personal data in scope. Add the Jakarta shift from the table above.
Stage 2: Application review
We look for AI running in production: a retrieval system with real users, an agent with approval steps, or a model served under load. Work for Indonesian fintech, ride-hailing or e-commerce counts when the candidate can describe the data controls they built.
Stage 3: Skills assessment
The candidate builds a small retrieval feature over an Indonesian and English document set, writes the eval with results per language, and reports cost per run.
Stage 4: Live technical interview with a senior engineer
A senior engineer reviews the eval with the candidate in English, then runs the breach drill above: which records leaked, who hears within the 3 x 24 hour window, and what changes in the pipeline.
Stage 5: Background and reference checks
We ask former managers what the candidate shipped, how they handled production data and how they reported model failures. You then choose the contractor or EOR route above.
