TL;DR: AI engineers in Thailand earn $3,930 to $8,770+ a month working for international clients on our machine learning engineer rate card, and we shortlist 6-8 candidates within 24 hours. The closest US benchmark, the BLS median for software developers, was $135,980 a year in May 2025.
SCB 10X's first Typhoon technical report measured its Thai tokenizer as 2.62 times more efficient than GPT-4's on the same Thai text. Token counts set the inference bill and how much context a prompt uses. An AI engineer building for Thai users should know what your prompts cost in Thai before writing agent code.
Key takeaways
- Thailand's range opens above the Philippine, Malaysian and Vietnamese floors in the table.
- Under Thailand's Copyright Act, code an employee writes belongs to the employee unless a written agreement says otherwise.
- Thailand scored 402 on EF's English Proficiency Index, 116th of 123 countries and regions.
- A 5 pm to 2 am shift in Bangkok gives a New York team six live hours while US daylight time lasts.
What AI Engineers Earn in Thailand Working for International Clients
Thailand's floor sits $60 above Vietnam's, and its open top runs $1,040 past Vietnam's, which makes it the dearest of the four markets compared here. We publish no AI engineer card for Thailand, so the Thailand row uses our machine learning engineer card, the closest match. The other three rows use our AI engineer cards.
The figures are what engineers in each market earn working directly for foreign companies, before any employer or platform costs.

Monthly ranges from the Remote (Working for International Clients) figures on our rate cards for Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam, converted at ExchangeRate-API mid-market rates for 14 September 2026.
The Thailand card quotes ฿130,000 to ฿290,000+ a month. Because it covers machine learning engineers, check whether your brief is model training or product AI work before you compare it with the other rows. Our Thailand data scientist card opens lower, at $3,630, with the same open top.
Through Second Talent you pay one monthly fee that bundles salary, payroll taxes, statutory contributions and our service fee, quoted per role and market. Our pricing page explains the subscription, and our AI engineer cost-to-hire page lists US freelance rates for contract work.
US Pay Benchmark for AI Engineers
BLS tracks no AI engineer occupation. The role maps to Software Developers (SOC 15-1252), because an AI engineer ships model calls, retrieval and agents as production software.

Monthly figures are the annual wages on the OEWS profile for 15-1252 divided by 12, rounded to the nearest $10.
The top of the Thailand card lands on the US 25th percentile monthly figure, and its floor sits $2,940 below the 10th percentile. An engineer at the top of the published Thailand range earns what a US software developer at the 25th percentile earns.
Salary is only part of the US cost. In the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation release for June 2026, wages and salaries made up 68.5% of employer compensation costs for full-time private industry workers, and benefits the other 31.5%.
Time Zone Overlap: Bangkok Against ET, CT and PT
A 9:00 am stand-up in New York starts at 8:00 pm in Bangkok in September, an hour earlier than in Manila or Singapore. Bangkok keeps UTC+7 all year with no daylight saving, and US clocks stay on daylight time from 8 March to 1 November 2026, per NIST.
The arithmetic: 9:00 am EDT (UTC-4) is 13:00 UTC, which is 8:00 pm in Bangkok. Under EST (UTC-5) the same start is 9:00 pm. Chicago's 9:00 am lands at 9:00 pm under CDT, and Los Angeles's at 11:00 pm under PDT.

Each shift is nine clock hours with a meal break, counted against a 9 am to 5 pm US day.
A West Coast team gets two or three hours from a shift that ends by 2 am. For AI work that split is often enough: your team files failing traces and eval requests before logging off, and a Bangkok engineer on a normal day runs the sweep and posts results before your morning.
Keep the shared hours for prompt changes that touch production, agent incidents and design reviews. We fix the shift before the offer, which is how our placements get 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.
AI Engineer Skills to Screen For

Thailand appears on the supported-country lists for Anthropic, the OpenAI API and the Gemini API, so model access needs no workaround. The Thai-specific screen covers language, documents and safety.
Thai tokenization and cost
The Typhoon report measured efficiency against GPT-4's token count for the same Thai text, and that comparison dates from 2023. Today's tokenizers will give a different ratio. Ask the candidate to tokenize a sample of your Thai support tickets with two providers' tokenizers, report tokens per thousand characters, and turn that into a monthly cost for your traffic.
Open-weight Thai models
Typhoon2.5-Qwen3-30B-A3B is a Thai and English mixture-of-experts model with 3 billion active parameters, a 256K context length and function calling. SCB 10X built it on Qwen3 30B A3B under the Apache 2.0 license.
Its card shows how to serve the model as an OpenAI-compatible API with vLLM.
Ask when the candidate would self-host a model like this instead of calling a hosted API. A good answer weighs data leaving your network, GPU cost at your volume and tool-call accuracy in Thai, with numbers from a test they ran.
Thai document extraction
Typhoon OCR 1.5 is a 2-billion-parameter vision-language model for Thai and English documents, built on Qwen3-VL 2B. It returns Markdown for text and HTML for tables, and its card says it handles handwriting and forms better than version 1. The card also warns that the model works only with its specific prompt.
Hand the candidate twenty scanned Thai invoices or government forms. Ask for field-level accuracy against a hand-labelled answer key before any retrieval work, and ask what they would do with the pages that fail.
Safety classification in Thai
ThaiSafetyClassifier labels a prompt and response pair as safe or harmful for Thai language and culture. It is a LoRA fine-tune of DeBERTaV3-base, trained on 46,893 samples of which 79.5% are safe, and it scores 84.4% accuracy on its test set.
Ask the candidate where a classifier with that accuracy belongs in a Thai customer chatbot. Strong answers route uncertain scores to a human or a stricter model, and measure false negatives on your own traffic, since the test set's class balance may not match yours.
Evaluation on Thai benchmarks
The same report introduced ThaiExam, built from examinations for high-school students and investment professionals in Thailand. A benchmark like that tests general Thai knowledge, and your product needs its own set. Ask the candidate to write fifty Thai evaluation questions from your documents, grade two models on them, and explain each disagreement between the grader and a Thai-speaking reviewer.
Contractor or Employer of Record in Thailand
Software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire" under 17 U.S.C. § 101, and a copyright transfer must be in writing and signed under § 204(a).
Thailand's Copyright Act B.E. 2537 counts computer programs as literary works (section 4), and its defaults run the opposite way to US law. Section 9 gives copyright in work made in the course of employment to the author, the employee, unless a written agreement says otherwise. The employer keeps a right to communicate the work to the public for the purpose of the employment.
For commissioned work, section 10 gives copyright to the person who commissioned it unless both sides agree otherwise. Section 17 requires any assignment to be in writing and signed by both assignor and assignee.
If the contract names no duration, the assignment is deemed to last ten years, so state that it runs for the full term of copyright. List prompts, eval sets, adapters and agent code in it.
IRS Publication 515 says the place where services are performed determines the source of the income, so an engineer working from Thailand earns foreign-source income. A foreign individual gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status.
On the Thai side, the Revenue Department treats anyone living in Thailand for more than 180 days in a calendar year as resident. A resident pays tax on income from Thai sources and on foreign-source income brought into Thailand.
An engineer who works full time on your models, on your accounts and hours, is the case for employment. Our Employer of Record service employs that engineer in Thailand, and our Thailand EOR page covers the details. This is a summary, not legal advice.

English Level and Working Norms in Thailand
Thailand's writing score on the EF English Proficiency Index 2025 is 363, its lowest skill, while reading is 416. The overall score is 402, 116th of 123 countries and regions, 13 points below the previous edition and against a global average of 488, per EF's Thailand page. Respondents in IT roles score 459, and Bangkok scores 467.
Those are national averages, and a hire is one engineer. Written English carries most AI decisions: system prompts, eval rubrics, incident notes. Run one assessment stage in writing, ask for a rubric plus a short report, and give it the same weight as the live interview.
The Bank of Thailand's financial institutions holiday list marks 13 and 23 October 2026 nationwide, with an additional special holiday in Bangkok on 16 October. December brings Monday 7 December, a substitute for the 5 December national day, then 10 and 31 December. Songkran 2027 runs Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April.
Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026 is a working day in Thailand, so an engineer there can watch a model release while your US team is off.
AI Engineer Hiring Process in Thailand

Second Talent's vetting covers stages 2 to 5 before you see a profile.
Stage 1: Define what the hire owns
You name the product surface, the hosted or open-weight models in use, the actions an agent may take without a human, and the Thai and English content in scope. Pick a Bangkok shift from the table above.
Stage 2: Application review
We look for AI in production with numbers attached: a retrieval system with an eval score, a Thai document pipeline with field accuracy, or a model served under load. A demo with no evaluation does not pass.
Stage 3: Skills assessment
The candidate builds a small retrieval assistant over a mixed Thai and English document set. They report token counts and cost per query, write a Thai eval set and add a safety check on outputs.
Stage 4: Live technical interview with a senior engineer
A senior engineer reviews the assessment with the candidate in English. The questions cover self-hosting against a hosted API, the failures the eval caught, and how they would handle a harmful answer in Thai.
Stage 5: Background and reference checks
We ask former managers what the candidate shipped, how they handled production data and how they communicated with non-Thai teams. You then choose the contractor or EOR route above.
