Hire Software Architects in the Philippines

Contents (8 sections)

TL;DR: Software architects in the Philippines sit in the Lead/Architect band of our Philippine software developer rate card, ₱140,000 to ₱210,000+ a month ($2,240 to $3,360+). The card's range for developers working for international clients runs to ₱240,000+ ($3,840+). The closest US benchmark, the BLS median for software developers, was $135,980 a year in May 2025.

Kubernetes 1.34 reaches end of life on 27 October 2026, and the project now maintains only 1.35, 1.36 and 1.37, per its releases page. Version 1.37 shipped on 26 August 2026 and gets about a year of patches. A software architect from the Philippines who joins you this quarter should be able to sequence that upgrade across your clusters and the services that run on them.

Key takeaways

  • JobStreet's median for Philippine software architect job ads, ₱160,000 a month, sits inside the Lead/Architect band of our card.
  • A 7 pm to 4 am Manila shift gives a New York team seven live hours in summer, and six of those nine hours carry the night shift differential.
  • AWS gave the Reliability pillar of its Well-Architected Framework a large-scale refresh in November 2024, so a review built on older notes uses outdated guidance.
  • OWASP's 2025 list for LLM applications names Excessive Agency and Unbounded Consumption, two risks an architect settles in the design, not the code.

What Software Architects Earn in the Philippines Working for International Clients

No card of ours prices software architects by title. The closest is our Philippine software developer rate card, which has a Lead/Architect band for engineers with 8+ years. The table sets that band next to the senior band, the card's range for developers working for international clients, and the Lead/Architect band on our Philippine cloud engineer card.

Our Philippine rate card, band Monthly (PHP) Monthly (USD)
Software developer card, Senior ₱90,000-₱160,000 $1,440-$2,560
Software developer card, Lead/Architect ₱140,000-₱210,000+ $2,240-$3,360+
Software developer card, Remote (Working for International Clients), all levels ₱90,000-₱240,000+ $1,440-$3,840+
Cloud engineer card, Lead/Architect ₱160,000-₱250,000 $2,560-$4,000

Peso figures come from the cards. Dollar figures use the ExchangeRate-API mid-market rate for 26 September 2026, ₱62.51 to the dollar, rounded to the nearest $10.

The international-client range covers every level on the card, from junior up. An architect belongs at its upper end, above the ₱210,000 where the Lead/Architect band closes. For hourly contract work, the same Lead/Architect row lists $50 to $80 an hour from international clients.

The cloud engineer card's Lead/Architect band opens ₱20,000 higher and closes at ₱250,000. Use it when the hire will own your cloud estate rather than your application design.

Local employers pay less. JobStreet's software architect salary page, dated September 2026 and built from full-time salary ranges disclosed in Philippine job ads, puts the middle half at ₱155,000 to ₱165,000 a month ($2,480 to $2,640). Its median is ₱160,000 ($2,560) and its 90th percentile ₱175,000 ($2,800), still below the ₱240,000+ that tops the card's international-client range.

Through Second Talent you pay one monthly fee that bundles salary, payroll taxes, statutory contributions and our service fee, quoted per role and market.

US Pay Benchmark for Software Architects

BLS publishes no software architect occupation. O*NET lists "Software Architect" among the reported job titles for Software Developers (15-1252), so that occupation is the benchmark.

We did not use Computer Network Architects (15-1241). That occupation designs data communication networks, not applications. Its May 2025 median was $134,050, within $2,000 of 15-1252, so the choice barely moves the figure.

BLS OEWS, May 2025, national Software Developers (15-1252)
Median annual $135,980
10th percentile, monthly $6,870
25th percentile, monthly $8,770
Median, monthly $11,330
75th percentile, monthly $14,330
90th percentile, monthly $17,890

Monthly figures are the annual wages on the OEWS profile for 15-1252 divided by 12, rounded to the nearest $10.

The top of the Lead/Architect band, $3,360, is less than half the US 10th percentile. The BLS columns cover every software developer, architects included, so they bound the US range rather than price the role.

Salary is only part of the US cost. BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation data for June 2026 show wages and salaries at 70.0% of compensation costs for private industry workers, and benefits at the other 30.0%.

Time Zone Overlap: Manila Against ET, CT and PT

Night work costs extra in the Philippines. Article 86 of the Labor Code gives employees a night shift differential of at least 10% of the regular wage for each hour worked between 10 pm and 6 am.

Manila runs on UTC+8 with no daylight saving time, and US daylight time lasts from 8 March to 1 November 2026, per NIST. The arithmetic: 9:00 am in New York under EDT (UTC-4) is 13:00 UTC, which is 9:00 pm in Manila. Under EST (UTC-5) the same meeting starts at 10:00 pm, and 9:00 am in Chicago under CDT also lands at 10:00 pm.

Manila shift (UTC+8) ET overlap (EDT / EST) CT overlap (CDT / CST) PT overlap (PDT / PST) Hours between 10 pm and 6 am
9 am-6 pm 0 / 0 0 / 0 0 / 0 0
4 pm-1 am 4 / 3 3 / 2 1 / 0 3
7 pm-4 am 7 / 6 6 / 5 4 / 3 6
9 pm-6 am 8 / 8 8 / 7 6 / 5 8

Each shift counts nine clock hours, meal break included, against a 9 am to 5 pm US working day.

An architect needs live hours for design reviews and trade-off calls. Diagrams, decision records and code review can move through the US night. The 4 pm to 1 am row covers a morning review with an East Coast team and leaves the Manila evening for written work. A weekly review at 10 am Pacific falls at 1 am in Manila under PDT, so agree that slot before the offer or move it to the East Coast morning.

We fix the shift before the offer, which is how our placements get 4-6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.

Software Architect Skills to Screen For

Expect cloud services and patterns on every senior CV. Screen for the decisions behind them: what the candidate chose, what it cost, and what they would change now.

Trade-off records and diagrams

Michael Nygard's 2011 post on documenting architecture decisions set the common format: title, context, decision, status and consequences. He asks for every consequence to be listed, not only the positive ones, and for a reversed decision to be marked superseded. The ADR GitHub organization defines a record as one justified design choice and its rationale.

The C4 model describes a system at four levels: context, containers, components and code. Ask for two ADRs the candidate wrote on a past system, one later superseded, and a container diagram of the same system. Check whether an engineer in New York could follow both cold.

Cloud design against the Well-Architected Framework

The AWS Well-Architected Framework has six pillars: operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency, cost optimization and sustainability. Its document history shows the latest major update on 6 November 2024. That update gave Reliability a large-scale refresh and added generative AI suggestions to Security and Operational excellence.

The framework's introduction calls a review "a constructive conversation about architectural decisions," not an audit. Give the candidate one of your workloads and ask them to lead that conversation: which pillar they would trade against which, and what they would fix first.

Distributed data and event-driven design

Amazon SQS standard queues deliver each message at least once, and on rare occasions deliver a copy again. The SQS developer guide tells builders to make their applications idempotent, so the design has to absorb duplicates.

CloudEvents is a specification for describing event data in a common way, with SDKs in Go, Java, Python and six other languages. Ask the candidate to design an order flow across three services: the event schema, where each service stores its state, how a duplicate is detected and how a failed step is compensated. Our event-driven architecture interview guide and microservices interview guide have questions for the live round.

Security and privacy by design

Section 20 of the Philippine Data Privacy Act of 2012 tells a personal information controller to put organizational, physical and technical measures in place. Those measures include network safeguards, a security policy and a process for finding foreseeable vulnerabilities. Section 21 keeps the controller responsible for data it passes to a third party for processing, whether domestically or internationally.

An architect who has worked for a Philippine employer has designed under those rules. Ask where personal data lives in a system they built, who could read it, and what the contract with each processor required. Then ask how they would give an offshore support team access without copying production data.

Architecture for AI features

OWASP's Top 10 for LLM Applications 2025 opens with Prompt Injection. It also lists Excessive Agency, Vector and Embedding Weaknesses and Unbounded Consumption. Each one is settled by design: what a model may call, which documents feed retrieval, and what stops a runaway bill.

AWS published a Generative AI Lens for the Well-Architected Framework on 19 November 2025. Ask the candidate to add a support assistant to an existing product and mark the trust boundaries, the tools the model may call and the spending limits.

Contractor or Employer of Record in the Philippines

Software is not one of the nine categories of commissioned work that can be "work made for hire" under 17 U.S.C. § 101, and a transfer must be in writing and signed under § 204(a).

The Philippine rule points the same way. Section 178.4 of the Intellectual Property Code gives the commissioning party ownership of a commissioned work, but the copyright stays with the creator unless a written stipulation says otherwise. Section 178.3 gives an employer the copyright in work from an employee's regularly assigned duties. Name reference architectures, diagrams, decision records and infrastructure code in the assignment.

IRS Publication 515 says the place where services are performed determines the source of the income, so an architect working from Manila or Cebu earns foreign-source income. A foreign individual gives the payer Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status.

Philippine courts apply the four-fold test: selection and engagement, payment of wages, the power of dismissal and control over how the work is done. In Atok Big Wedge v. Gison, the Supreme Court called control the most important of the four. An architect who sits in your planning meetings, takes direction from your CTO and signs off your roadmap starts to look like an employee.

Employment adds four statutory lines to salary:

Our Philippines EOR page shows how we run those lines through payroll and what the employer cost looks like. This is a summary, not legal advice.

Independent contractor Employer of Record
Legal employer None; the architect invoices you The EOR's Philippine entity
US paperwork Form W-8BEN from the architect Service agreement with the EOR
IP Written stipulation assigning designs, records and code (IP Code 178.4) Employer copyright under 178.3, passed to you through the EOR agreement
Local labor law Four-fold test; control points to employment Night differential, 13th month pay and statutory contributions apply
Pay currency Agreed in the contract, often USD Local payroll run by the EOR

English Level and Working Norms in the Philippines

The Philippines' IT job-function score on the EF English Proficiency Index is 581, above its national score of 569, which ranks 28th in the world against a global average of 488. Writing, at 603, runs 64 points ahead of speaking at 539, per EF's Philippines page.

That suits architecture work, which lives in documents. An architect's writing carries a design to engineers, security reviewers and budget holders who never join the call. Ask finalists to write one ADR for a real change in your system, then present it to a non-technical product lead in ten minutes.

Proclamation 1006 sets the Philippine holidays for 2026. Bonifacio Day on Monday 30 November is a regular holiday, 8 December is a special non-working day, and Christmas Eve joins them as an additional special non-working day. Keep a cluster upgrade or a major cutover out of that stretch.

Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026 is a working day in the Philippines, so an architect there can supervise a change window while your US team is off.

Software Architect Hiring Process in the Philippines

Second Talent's vetting covers stages 2 to 5 before you see a profile.

Stage 1: Define what the hire owns You write down the decisions the architect makes alone, the ones they recommend and who signs off. Name the systems in scope, the cloud provider, the next major change and the Manila shift from the table above.

Stage 2: Application review We look for systems the candidate designed and then ran for at least a year, with traffic and availability figures they can explain. A list of patterns and cloud services with no system behind it does not pass.

Stage 3: Skills assessment The candidate gets a brief for a product with an event-driven order flow and an AI support feature. They return a C4 container diagram, two ADRs and a short Well-Architected review of their own design. Scoring weighs the trade-offs they name as much as the design itself.

Stage 4: Live technical interview with a senior engineer A senior engineer walks through the design in English, then changes a constraint: a region fails for three hours, a broker delivers every message twice, or the model bill triples. The candidate explains what moves, what degrades and what it costs.

Stage 5: Background and reference checks We ask former engineering leads whether the candidate's designs outlasted the team that built them and how they handled being overruled. You then choose the contractor or EOR route above.

Guide to Hiring Developers in the Philippines

Everything you need to know about employment laws, payroll, and compliance when hiring developers in the Philippines.

The Philippines runs one of the largest technology services sectors in the world, and it is the only market in Asia where a full overlap with US business hours is routine rather than a concession. Here is the state of it going into 2026.

$40B

IT-BPM export revenue in 2025, on track for $42B in 2026

The sector is growing, but the mix is changing

Industry body IBPAP reported about $40 billion in export revenue for 2025 across roughly 1.9 million workers, growth that beat the global market. In July 2026 it cut its 2028 targets to $50.5 billion and 2.14 million workers, down from the $59 billion and 2.5 million projected in 2022, citing AI adoption and stronger competition. The work being automated is the scripted, high volume end. Engineering is the part moving up the value chain, which is why IBPAP is now steering toward global capability centres rather than outsourced support.

English, stated accurately

In the 2025 EF English Proficiency Index the Philippines scored 569 and ranked 28th of 123 countries, inside the high proficiency band and well above the 488 global average. Within Asia it sits second, behind Malaysia. For engineering work the practical difference from first place is negligible: design docs, pull request comments and client calls happen without a translation layer.

Where the developers are

Metro Manila holds the deepest pool, the highest rates and most of the product engineering work. Cebu is the strongest secondary hub, generally 10 to 20 percent cheaper with lower attrition. Davao, Iloilo and Bacolod are smaller but real, and remote hiring puts them 20 to 30 percent below Manila rates at the same seniority.

See what each role actually pays in the Philippines developer rate card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions.

How much does it cost to hire a software architect in the Philippines?
Software architects fall in the Lead/Architect band of our Philippine software developer rate card: ₱140,000 to ₱210,000+ a month ($2,240 to $3,360+). The card's range for developers working for international clients runs to ₱240,000+ ($3,840+), and architects belong at its upper end.
How many working hours overlap between Manila and the US?
Manila is on UTC+8 with no daylight saving time. A 7 pm to 4 am Manila shift gives a New York team seven live hours during US daylight time and six in winter. Hours between 10 pm and 6 am carry a night shift differential of at least 10% under Article 86 of the Labor Code.
Should I hire a Philippine software architect as a contractor or through an Employer of Record?
Philippine courts weigh control over how the work is done most heavily, so an architect who takes direction from your CTO and sits in your planning starts to look like an employee. An EOR employs the architect locally and runs 13th month pay, SSS, PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG. Our Philippines EOR page covers the setup.
Who owns the designs and code a Philippine contractor creates?
Under Section 178.4 of the Philippine Intellectual Property Code, the copyright in a commissioned work stays with the creator unless a written stipulation says otherwise. Name reference architectures, diagrams, decision records and infrastructure code in the assignment, and have it signed as 17 U.S.C. § 204(a) requires.
What skills should I test when hiring a software architect?
Ask for architecture decision records and a C4 container diagram from a past system, a Well-Architected review of one of your workloads, and an event-driven design that handles duplicate messages. Our event-driven architecture and microservices interview guides have questions for the live round.
How fast can Second Talent shortlist software architects from the Philippines?
We shortlist 6-8 candidates within 24 hours from 100,000+ pre-vetted engineers, accepting only the top 1% of applicants. You pay $0 upfront with no lock-in, and our software architects page covers the role in other markets.
