TL;DR: Second Talent is the pick for US startups that want a full-time forward deployed engineer at Asian pay, with a vetted shortlist in 24 hours and rates of $23 to $39 an hour. For a senior US hire, use Christian & Timbers, Paraform or Recruiting from Scratch; for embedded contractors, Uvik, &above, Huzzle, Scrums.com or Go Fractional. To recruit on your own, FWDDeploy posts the role for $50.
FDE Pulse counted 1,294 open forward deployed engineer postings in late October 2026, at a median disclosed base of $186,000. Christian & Timbers says it has run more than 200 FDE searches in 2025 and 2026 alone.
I left out the generalist marketplaces, which still file the role under "software developer", and kept firms that sell it by name.

1. Second Talent

Second Talent is for US startups that want a full-time forward deployed engineer on the team, paid at Asian rates rather than Bay Area ones. We are the company behind this site, so weigh the ranking with that in mind.
You describe the deployment work, your stack and your time zone. We send 6 to 8 pre-vetted forward deployed engineers within 24 hours. We test each one on shipping with Claude Code, Cursor and AI agents.
We then handle the contract, payroll, compliance and equipment. Pay on our rate cards splits into two bands: the Philippines, India and Vietnam start within $280 of each other, while China and Singapore start above $9,600 a month.

The Philippine rate card starts at $2,230 a month. The constraint is the clock: a 10:00 to 19:00 UTC shift gives six hours of overlap with New York but three with San Francisco.
We agree that schedule before the offer goes out, which is how our placements get 4 to 6 hours of daily overlap with US hours.
The sample profiles on the page show forward deployed engineers with 6 to 8+ years of experience, already working remotely for US healthtech and AI companies. One client, Open Campus, built a 10-engineer team through us in two months.
- Best for: a startup that needs a permanent FDE for remote customer deployments and wants 50% to 70% lower payroll than a US hire.
- Where it falls short: engineers sit in Asia, so on-site weeks at a US customer are rare, and West Coast customers get the shortest overlap.
- Pricing: $23 to $39 an hour billed monthly, per our FDE cost-to-hire page, and $0 until you hire.
2. Christian & Timbers

Christian & Timbers is for AI companies hiring a head of forward deployed engineering, or the first senior engineers of a new FDE function, who can pay a retained search fee.
The firm runs a dedicated forward deployed engineer practice and says it has engaged on more than 200 FDE searches in 2025 and 2026.
Its pitch is a map of where these engineers already work: Palantir, Anduril, Scale AI and the other firms that ran the model at scale.
The firm says it evaluates each search against the customer environment the hire will face: the sector, the data complexity and the deployment constraints.
Its named AI placements include Sylvia Isler as CTO of Atropos Health, whose evidence platform runs inside customer environments.
The firm assesses candidates with its own Science of Talent Engineering method, which it says weighs execution capability as well as technical depth.
Its market numbers differ from the trackers'. The same page counts 224 open FDE roles across AI companies, against 1,294 postings on FDE Pulse, because FDE Pulse also counts consulting firms and enterprise software vendors.
- Best for: a funded AI company filling a director or staff-level FDE seat in San Francisco or New York.
- Where it falls short: the testimonials on the FDE page describe CFO, CISO and CTO searches, so there is no public proof of an individual-contributor FDE placement.
- Pricing: retained search; the fee is not published.
3. Paraform

Paraform is for venture-backed teams that want several specialist recruiters working one FDE role at once, and that only want to pay when someone starts.
You post the role, a talent strategist sharpens the brief, and recruiters who specialise in the title send warm introductions with screening notes attached. The Paraform FDE page lists eight filled roles.
They include a senior FDE for Rippling, a forward deployed SWE for Palantir, a deployed engineer for Windsurf and a forward deployed MLE for Federato, plus FDEs for Assort Health, Parloa, Athena Intelligence and Avoca.
The page also carries a line from Palantir's CTO:
"In a zero-sum talent war, Paraform is how we win."
Shyam Sankar, Chief Technology Officer, Palantir, on the Paraform FDE page
You see each candidate's screening notes, resume and LinkedIn profile before you agree to an interview.
A dedicated talent strategist manages the search and is reachable on Slack, and Paraform says it pays recruiters for quality, so you meet fewer candidates per hire.
- Best for: a Series A or later company hiring US-based FDEs on full salaries.
- Where it falls short: the FDE page shows no price. The cost lands as one large fee per hire, so it suits one or two seats more than a team of ten.
- Pricing: contingency, and Paraform's own comparison with recruiting agencies puts fees around 20% to 25% of first-year salary, with nothing due until a hire starts.
4. Recruiting from Scratch

Recruiting from Scratch is for seed to Series B startups that want a contingency recruiter on an FDE search and a short list rather than a stack of resumes.
The New York firm has no dedicated FDE service page. Its FDE pitch is a July 26, 2026 blog post that ranks recruiting firms for the role and puts itself first. The figures in it cover the whole firm.
It claims 300+ placements, a 2M+ candidate network and a 29-day average time to hire against a 49-day industry average. It names hires at Decagon and Mercor. It says sourcing starts within 48 hours.
The process it describes is a role intake call, then a curated shortlist of 3 to 5 candidates.
The same post groups its rivals into Kore1, "large retained-search firms" and "contract talent marketplaces", which tells you which alternatives it expects you to weigh.
- Fee committed before the search starts
- Built for leadership seats
- No upfront cost, fee only on a hire
- 90-day replacement guarantee
- Best for: a startup making its first one or two US FDE hires on a fixed timeline.
- Where it falls short: every number is self-reported and firm-wide, with no count of FDE placements on their own.
- Pricing: contingency with no retainer; the percentage is not published.
5. Uvik Software

Uvik Software is for teams that want a senior contract FDE inside their codebase within two weeks, with data kept in the EU.
Uvik employs its engineers directly, and the company says it places none with a client before 12 months of delivery in-house.
Its FDE page splits the role into five tracks, from Python-first FDE to fractional architect, and publishes a rate for each. Uvik runs from Tallinn, with a commercial office in Ipswich, UK.

Its case studies are FDE-shaped work: LangGraph and MCP agent orchestration for Glean, and connector tooling for Dataiku.
The company says its median client engagement runs 18 months and that 64% of clients renew or expand at the six-month mark.
For Astronomer it built migration tooling and pipeline scaffolding that turned repeated customer onboarding into reusable code, which is the product-feedback half of the FDE job.
- Best for: a European or US team that needs a Python or LLM-heavy FDE on contract, with a 30-day free replacement.
- Where it falls short: the bench is 50+ senior engineers, and the stack leans hard on Python.
- Pricing: $50 to $85 an hour for a Python-first FDE, $75 to $99 for AI or machine learning, $65 to $90 for data or platform.
6. &above

&above is for UK enterprises that want forward deployed engineers in their standups without hiring or managing them.
The London studio recruits, vets and manages the engineers, who then work in your repositories against a scoped workflow.
Its FDE service page offers two tiers: forward deployed engineers alone, or an AI Product Squad that adds product management and design. &above does not sell a platform of its own, so it builds on whichever model provider fits.
The proof is client work. It built an agent system that 5,000 Google Cloud sellers use daily. Its engineers inside Tesco's retail media business cut creative compliance reviews from up to four weeks to days.
The studio also says it designed 80+ AI Innovation Lab engagements for Google's top customers.
The engagement is built to end. Engineers ship alongside your own staff so the system, and the knowledge of how it works, stays with your team when &above leaves.
- Best for: a large UK company that wants AI capability built in-house and handed over to its own staff.
- Where it falls short: you never employ the engineer, and the page sells delivery across the UK, not US time zones.
- Pricing: scoped engagements; no rates are published.
7. Huzzle

Huzzle is for founders who want a full-time FDE from Europe, Latin America or Africa and a long safety net if the hire fails.
An AI recruiter Huzzle calls Heidi sources candidates, runs a structured interview and scores each one on ten factors, and a human then reviews the call. The Huzzle FDE page promises 2 to 3 interview-ready candidates within 72 hours.
It also prints salary benchmarks: £60,000 to £100,000 in the UK, €38,000 to €62,000 in Portugal and $34,000 to $60,000 in Brazil.

Huzzle says it sources from 300,000+ professionals, has run 100,000+ AI interviews, and that Heidi's scores reach 72% agreement with expert human raters. It also handles contracts, compliance and payroll in any currency.
Read the page before you brief it. The "What a Huzzle Forward Deployed Engineer handles" block lists GTM experiments, board decks and onboarding hires, which reads like an operations template rather than engineering work.
- Best for: a startup that wants a direct hire on its own payroll with a 6-month perfect-hire guarantee.
- Where it falls short: the role page mixes FDE and generalist operator copy, so test coding depth in your own interview.
- Pricing: a one-time Direct Hire fee or a monthly Talent on Demand subscription; neither amount is on the page.
8. Scrums.com

Scrums.com is for companies with European or US East Coast customers that want FDEs on a matching clock, often as a small pod rather than a single hire.
Its FDE hiring page sets out a fixed timeline. A requirements call happens on day 0 and vetting and matching on days 1 to 14. A first engineer is operational in the customer's environment by day 21.
The FDE reports to your engineering leadership. Scrums.com tracks each engineer through its own platform, with per-engineer DORA metrics from the first sprint.
Vetting covers four things the company names: depth across several stacks, client communication, comfort with ambiguity and domain knowledge of your industry. Its contracts include NDA and IP assignment as standard.
You can hire one FDE or a pre-assembled pod, and the page shows MassMart (Walmart) and Volkswagen among its client logos.
Its example deployment is a core-banking API integration with a model fine-tuned on client data, which fits the fintech buyers it targets.
- Best for: a fintech or enterprise SaaS vendor rolling out to European customers with compliance reviews.
- Where it falls short: three weeks to start is slow next to the shortlist speeds above, and overlap with the US West Coast is thin.
- Pricing: no upfront fees and a 100% replacement guarantee; the company says it runs 40% to 60% below US and EU FDE rates but prints no rate card.
9. Go Fractional

Go Fractional is for a startup with one or two stalled enterprise pilots that needs a senior engineer part-time, before it knows how many deployments it will run.
After a free 30-minute intro call, its AI shortlists operators whose past clients match your brief, and an executive recruiter checks each one. The Go Fractional FDE page claims a match in about 3 days and a 98% match success rate.
It sets that against 2 to 5 months to hire a full-time FDE.
The page names the triggers it sells against: pilots that stall at integration, core engineers pulled onto customer calls, and AI demos that break on messy customer data. It puts average experience across the network at twelve years.
Three engagement types are on offer: a fractional retainer, contract-to-hire if you want to convert later, and an interim full-time stint to cover a gap.
- Best for: unblocking an SSO setup, data connector or agent workflow while the buyer is still paying attention.
- Where it falls short: all five sample profiles on the FDE page describe themselves as fractional CTOs, so expect leadership more than daily hands-on integration code.
- Pricing: a monthly retainer with no recruiting fees; rates are not published.
10. FWDDeploy

FWDDeploy is for hiring teams that will run the search themselves and want the post in front of engineers who search for the title.
The board lists forward deployed and deployment strategist roles only, from Atlassian, Oracle, LMI and Publicis Groupe to Japanese employers such as Toppan and CyberAgent, many posted in Japanese.
Posting a job costs $50 for 30 days, with fields for job type, remote or on-site, location limits and a salary range.
Recruitment agencies post there too: Revive It Recruitment lists a founding FDE in New York at $140,000 to $210,000, so your post competes with agency briefs for the same readers.
Candidates can sign up for free job alerts, which puts new posts in their inbox.
Fill the salary field. On FDE Pulse, which aggregates FDE postings, the median disclosed base runs from $158,000 in Chicago to $206,000 in San Francisco.

- Best for: a company with an in-house recruiter and an FDE role it can fill without outside help.
- Where it falls short: the newest listings on the front page were two to six months old on October 28, a sign of thin traffic, and all screening is yours.
- Pricing: from $50 for a 30-day post.
Hiring a forward deployed engineer from Asia
The recruiters above work the same US pool, which is why their fees track US salaries. Anthropic's FDE posting for Paris expects 25% to 50% travel to customer sites.
An engineer in Asia swaps most of that travel for video calls, and that is the trade I would weigh first.
Our forward deployed engineer role guide breaks down the job, and the AI forward deployed engineer variant covers RAG and evaluation work.
If you are still deciding which title to hire, compare FDE vs solutions architect and deployment strategist vs FDE. Once the brief is ready, tell us what you need and we will send a shortlist within 24 hours.
FAQ
What does a forward deployed engineer do?
A forward deployed engineer writes production code inside one customer's systems, connecting the vendor's product to that customer's data and workflows. Palantir popularised the title, and AI labs now hire for it.
How much does a forward deployed engineer cost in the US?
A mid-level freelance FDE in the US costs $119 to $185 an hour. Our FDE rate card covers junior to principal levels.
Can a forward deployed engineer work remotely?
Yes, for most integration work. Roles tied to one large or security-sensitive account still expect on-site weeks at the customer.
