Observed, not derived. Rates we quote and place at in India, by seniority level. The widest internal spread of any market on this site: the same job title covers a first-year graduate in a service company and a staff engineer running platform work for a US product team, and the two do not price within a factor of three of each other.

India rates by city

Mid-level full-stack, modelled from the Numbeo cost-of-living index against Bangalore, Sep, 2026. Only cities with a published index appear here.

India · modelled city hourly rate, Sep, 2026
City Cost of living vs Bangalore Hourly rate Basis
Bangalore The largest developer pool in the country and its entire product engineering centre. Rates on this page are anchored here. 22.0 1.000x $20-$52 modelled
Hyderabad Strong enterprise and global capability centre supply, with a deeper data engineering bench than its size suggests. 21.8 0.991x $20-$52 modelled
Chennai Enterprise and service-company delivery with the lowest cost base of the three, though a thinner product bench. 20.3 0.923x $18-$48 modelled

Why the city column barely moves. The widest cost-of-living gap between these cities is 8%, and the modelled rates differ by less again. A freelancer billing an international client prices against that market, not against local rent, so city is the weakest lever on this page. Treat the column as a tiebreaker between two otherwise equal candidates and nothing more. Every figure in this table is modelled from a consumer price index rather than measured from observed rates, which is why it carries a different badge from every other table here.

What really impacts the cost?

In India seniority moves the rate more than any other lever, and the role premium is measurable against a published baseline.

What moves the rate in India

India is the cheapest market on this page and the one where a single quoted rate tells you least. It has the largest developer population in the world, so junior supply is effectively unlimited and starts at $14 an hour, while the smaller pool with product experience and strong written English prices near the top of the mid band. Vetting matters more here than in any other market we cover.

Every stack is available in depth, which is not true anywhere else in the region. Data engineering and machine learning benches are genuinely deep rather than nominal, and the service-company sector means enterprise Java and .NET supply is unusually strong. The trade-off is variance: two candidates with identical titles can differ more than in any other market here.

Pushes the rate up

  • Product experience with a Western team, which separates candidates here more sharply than any other factor.
  • Strong written English. India has the widest range of any market we cover, and the top of that range prices accordingly.

Pulls the rate down

  • Hiring at junior level, where supply is effectively unlimited and competition between candidates is highest anywhere on this site.
  • Enterprise Java, .NET and service-company work, where the bench is deepest.

Estimated Cost by Project Scope

Whole-project cost at the mid-level India rate of $20 to $52 an hour. The hour ranges are estimates and the scope, not the rate, is what usually moves a quote.

How the India figures are built

The rates on this page are observed in India at each seniority level, not a United States figure scaled by a ratio. At mid-level they work out at about 0.33x the United States rate for the same role, but that ratio is a consequence of the rates rather than the way they are produced.

Domestic employment surveys measure what an employer in India pays a local employee. This page measures what a freelancer bills an international client, and the two populations are far apart in every market on this site. Both figures are correct about different questions, so they are never divided into one another.

Only the full-stack figure is observed directly. The other nine roles scale off it by the difference between their band and the full-stack band, which is why a machine learning engineer prices above a PHP developer here by the same proportion as anywhere else.

Freelancer or employee?

The rates above are contractor rates: you pay for hours worked and nothing else. An employee costs a salary plus statutory employer contributions, and the comparison is not the one most people assume, because a freelancer at $30 an hour working full time is not cheaper than a $30-an-hour salaried equivalent once you account for the hours you do not buy.

If you are weighing a permanent hire in India instead, the salary rate cards price employment by country and role, with local currency bands and employer costs.

Questions buyers ask

How much does it cost to hire a freelance developer in India?

A mid-level full-stack developer in India bills $20 to $52 an hour, which is $3,200 to $8,320 a month at 160 billable hours. Junior rates run $14 to $24 and senior rates $30 to $72. These are rates we quote and place at in India rather than a United States figure scaled by a compensation ratio, because the gap between junior and senior here is roughly twice what United States wage data predicts.

Which roles are cheapest and most expensive to hire in India?

Of the ten roles on this page, PHP Developer is the cheapest at $15 to $38 an hour and Machine Learning Engineer the dearest at $28 to $72, both mid-level. The spread across roles inside one market is about 4.8x, which is wider than the gap between India and most other markets for the same role. The skill matters more than the map.

Which platform is cheapest for hiring full-stack developers?

On fees, Arc charges nothing on hourly work and Upwork takes 3% to 10%, the lowest of the channels that publish anything; Toptal publishes none. On rates, Upwork spans $25 to $150 an hour and Fiverr $25 to $100, against $70 to $200 on a vetted network. The channel is the smallest lever you have: fees span 0% to 25%, while on this page geography moves the same hour about 4.3x and seniority about 2.6x.

Why is the range so wide in India?

Because the market is the largest and least uniform anywhere. Junior rates start at $14 an hour against an unlimited graduate supply, while a mid-level developer with product experience and strong written English reaches $52. That is a spread of more than three times inside one seniority band. A single India rate is close to meaningless without naming the vetting standard behind it.

Is India cheaper than the Philippines or Vietnam?

Yes, at every level, and by a widening margin as you go down the seniority ladder. A mid-level Indian developer runs $20 to $52 an hour against $22 to $58 in the Philippines and $28 to $68 in Vietnam. The gap is largest at junior level, where India has more supply than any other market on this page.
