Observed, not derived. Rates we quote and place at in Vietnam, by seniority level, rather than a ratio applied to a United States band. Published as a range per level because that is how the market actually prices: the junior bench is deep and cheap, while mid and senior candidates with English and international delivery experience are scarce enough to price close to the top of the range.

Vietnam rates by city

Mid-level full-stack, modelled from the Numbeo cost-of-living index against Ho Chi Minh City, Sep, 2026. Only cities with a published index appear here.

Vietnam · modelled city hourly rate, Sep, 2026
City Cost of living vs Ho Chi Minh City Hourly rate Basis
Ho Chi Minh City The largest talent pool in the country and the centre of its fintech and product engineering work. Rates on this page are anchored here. 29.7 1.000x $28-$68 modelled
Hanoi Enterprise, government-adjacent and outsourced delivery work, with a deeper Java and .NET bench than the south. 28.7 0.966x $27-$66 modelled
Da Nang The fastest growing outsourcing hub and the cheapest of the three to live in, though the senior bench is shallow. 28.1 0.946x $26-$64 modelled

Why the city column barely moves. The widest cost-of-living gap between these cities is 6%, and the modelled rates differ by less again. A freelancer billing an international client prices against that market, not against local rent, so city is the weakest lever on this page. Treat the column as a tiebreaker between two otherwise equal candidates and nothing more. Every figure in this table is modelled from a consumer price index rather than measured from observed rates, which is why it carries a different badge from every other table here.

What really impacts the cost?

In Vietnam seniority moves the rate more than any other lever, and the role premium is measurable against a published baseline.

What moves the rate in Vietnam

Vietnam runs a wider gap between junior and senior rates than United States wage data would predict. A junior developer bills from $18 an hour and a strong mid-level developer can reach $68, because the junior bench is deep while mid and senior candidates with English and international delivery experience are genuinely scarce. Seniority, not geography, is the biggest single lever on what you pay here.

Supply is deepest in mobile and application work, which is why Flutter, Android and general application roles clear faster here than anywhere else in the region. Machine learning and data engineering supply is real but much thinner, so those roles carry a longer search even though the published rate looks the same.

Pushes the rate up

  • Strong written and spoken English, which is the single largest separator between two Vietnamese candidates who look identical on paper.
  • Overlap with United States hours. Vietnam is 11 to 15 hours ahead of the US mainland, so a US-hours schedule is a night shift and it is priced as one.

Pulls the rate down

  • Hiring at junior level, where the bench is deepest and competition between candidates is highest.
  • Application and mobile work, the two areas where Vietnamese supply is strongest.

Estimated Cost by Project Scope

How the Vietnam figures are built

The rates on this page are observed in Vietnam at each seniority level, not a United States figure scaled by a ratio. At mid-level they work out at about 0.44x the United States rate for the same role, but that ratio is a consequence of the rates rather than the way they are produced.

Domestic employment surveys measure what an employer in Vietnam pays a local employee. This page measures what a freelancer bills an international client, and the two populations are far apart in every market on this site. Both figures are correct about different questions, so they are never divided into one another.

Only the full-stack figure is observed directly. The other nine roles scale off it by the difference between their band and the full-stack band, which is why a machine learning engineer prices above a PHP developer here by the same proportion as anywhere else.

Freelancer or employee?

The rates above are contractor rates: you pay for hours worked and nothing else. An employee costs a salary plus statutory employer contributions, and the comparison is not the one most people assume, because a freelancer at $30 an hour working full time is not cheaper than a $30-an-hour salaried equivalent once you account for the hours you do not buy.

If you are weighing a permanent hire in Vietnam instead, the salary rate cards price employment by country and role, with local currency bands and employer costs.

Questions buyers ask

How much does it cost to hire a freelance developer in Vietnam?

A mid-level full-stack developer in Vietnam bills $28 to $68 an hour, which is $4,480 to $10,880 a month at 160 billable hours. Junior rates run $18 to $30 and senior rates $40 to $95. These are rates we quote and place at in Vietnam rather than a United States figure scaled by a compensation ratio, because the gap between junior and senior here is roughly twice what United States wage data predicts.

Which roles are cheapest and most expensive to hire in Vietnam?

Of the ten roles on this page, PHP Developer is the cheapest at $21 to $50 an hour and Machine Learning Engineer the dearest at $39 to $94, both mid-level. The spread across roles inside one market is about 4.5x, which is wider than the gap between Vietnam and most other markets for the same role. The skill matters more than the map.

Which platform is cheapest for hiring full-stack developers?

On fees, Arc charges nothing on hourly work and Upwork takes 3% to 10%, the lowest of the channels that publish anything; Toptal publishes none. On rates, Upwork spans $25 to $150 an hour and Fiverr $25 to $100, against $70 to $200 on a vetted network. The channel is the smallest lever you have: fees span 0% to 25%, while on this page geography moves the same hour about 4.3x and seniority about 2.6x.

Why is the range between junior and senior so wide in Vietnam?

Because supply is not evenly distributed across seniority. Vietnam graduates a large number of developers every year, so junior rates start at $18 an hour and stay competitive. Mid and senior candidates who also have strong English and experience delivering for overseas clients are far rarer, and they price accordingly, up to $95 an hour at senior level. Seniority moves the rate more than any other factor on this page.

Do Vietnamese freelancers work United States hours?

Some do, and they charge for it. Vietnam runs 11 to 15 hours ahead of the United States mainland, so overlapping a US working day means working nights. Expect a premium of roughly 10% to 20% on the rates on this page for a genuine US-hours commitment, and expect a smaller pool willing to take it.
