United States rates by seniority
Full-stack developer, the reference role, at every level. Seniority multiplies the band off the US Bureau of Labor Statistics wage distribution, so this range carries the width of that distribution rather than a locally observed spread.

United States rates by city
Mid-level full-stack, modelled from the Numbeo cost-of-living index against New York, NY, Sep, 2026. Only cities with a published index appear here.
| City | Cost of living | vs New York, NY | Hourly rate | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New York, NY The most expensive market in the country and the Numbeo index baseline. Rates on this page are anchored here. | 100.0 | 1.000x | $85-$135 | modelled |
| San Francisco, CA The deepest senior and machine learning bench anywhere, and the most competitive market on this list. | 94.5 | 0.945x | $80-$128 | modelled |
| Seattle, WA Deep infrastructure and cloud engineering supply, with large-employer competition setting the floor. | 91.9 | 0.919x | $78-$124 | modelled |
Why the city column barely moves. The widest cost-of-living gap between these cities is 9%, and the modelled rates differ by less again. A freelancer billing an international client prices against that market, not against local rent, so city is the weakest lever on this page. Treat the column as a tiebreaker between two otherwise equal candidates and nothing more. Every figure in this table is modelled from a consumer price index rather than measured from observed rates, which is why it carries a different badge from every other table here.
Hiring Costs by Platforms and Marketplaces
Buyer fees as each channel publishes them, read on 27 August 2026. Hourly rates are global market ranges, not United States rates.
| Platform | Buyer fee | Typical hourly rate |
|---|---|---|
| Upwork | 3% to 10%, plus $0.99 to $14.99 per contract | $25 to $150 an hour |
| Fiverr | 5.5%, plus $3.50 under $200 | $25 to $100 an hour |
| Toptal | Not published | $70 to $200 an hour |
| Arc.dev | 0% hourly, 20% of first-year salary permanent | $61 to $100 an hour |
| Agency or dev shop | 0%, margin sits inside the rate | $165 to $275 an hour |
| Recruiter, permanent | 15% to 25% of first-year salary | $20,500 to $34,500 per placement |
| Second Talent | 0% | $3,000 to $6,000 a month |
What really impacts the cost?
In United States seniority moves the rate more than any other lever, and the role premium is measurable against a published baseline.

What moves the rate in the United States
The United States is the benchmark every other market on this site is measured against, and the only one built from a published wage median rather than a ratio. A mid-level developer bills $85 to $135 an hour. Every figure elsewhere on this site is this band scaled by a market ratio, so this page is the arithmetic behind all of them.
Every stack at depth, and the only market on this site where scarcity is about seniority and specialisation rather than availability. Machine learning and infrastructure command genuine premiums; commodity web and CMS work is the one area where the domestic rate is hard to justify against any offshore market on this site.
Pushes the rate up
- Machine learning and infrastructure specialisation, which command genuine premiums here rather than nominal ones.
- Seniority. This is the only market on this site where the constraint is experience rather than availability.
Pulls the rate down
- Hiring outside the coastal metros, where the cost base is materially lower.
- Commodity web and CMS work, the one category where the domestic rate is hardest to justify.
Estimated Cost by Project Scope

How the United States figures are built
The benchmark every other market on this site is measured against, and the only one priced from a published wage median rather than a ratio: the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics median for software developers, loaded with the employer costs a contractor carries themselves, then divided across a utilisation range. We place engineers across nine Asian markets and the United States is not one of them, so this page is a benchmark rather than an offer.
Because the figures are derived, this range carries only the width of the underlying band, which is utilisation uncertainty of about 1.6 times. The Asian markets on this site carry rates observed at each seniority level, and their real junior to senior spread is closer to 2.3 times. A narrower range here is an artefact of the method rather than a tighter market, and the two are not directly comparable on width.
Every role on this page scales off the same band by the difference between its band and the full-stack band, which is why a machine learning engineer prices above a PHP developer here by the same proportion as anywhere else on this site.
Freelancer or employee?
The rates above are contractor rates: you pay for hours worked and nothing else. An employee costs a salary plus statutory employer contributions, and the comparison is not the one most people assume, because a freelancer at $30 an hour working full time is not cheaper than a $30-an-hour salaried equivalent once you account for the hours you do not buy.
If you are weighing a permanent hire in the United States instead, the salary rate cards price employment by country and role, with local currency bands and employer costs.
Questions buyers ask
How much does it cost to hire a freelance developer in United States?
A mid-level full-stack developer in United States bills $85 to $135 an hour, which is $13,600 to $21,600 a month at 160 billable hours. Junior rates run $67 to $104 and senior rates $110 to $171. These are rates we quote and place at in United States rather than a United States figure scaled by a compensation ratio, because the gap between junior and senior here is roughly twice what United States wage data predicts.
Which roles are cheapest and most expensive to hire in United States?
Of the ten roles on this page, PHP Developer is the cheapest at $62 to $100 an hour and Machine Learning Engineer the dearest at $119 to $185, both mid-level. The spread across roles inside one market is about 3.0x, which is wider than the gap between United States and most other markets for the same role. The skill matters more than the map.
Which platform is cheapest for hiring full-stack developers?
On fees, Arc charges nothing on hourly work and Upwork takes 3% to 10%, the lowest of the channels that publish anything; Toptal publishes none. On rates, Upwork spans $25 to $150 an hour and Fiverr $25 to $100, against $70 to $200 on a vetted network. The channel is the smallest lever you have: fees span 0% to 25%, while on this page geography moves the same hour about 4.3x and seniority about 2.6x.
How is the United States figure built?
From a published employee median, loaded and divided. The BLS puts the software developer median at $65.38 an hour as an employee. Employer costs are added using the BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation series, which puts wages at 69.9% of total employer cost, then the result is divided across a utilisation range because a freelancer does not bill every hour they work. Every other market on this site is this band scaled by a ratio.
Is it ever cheaper to hire in the United States?
Not on rate. A mid-level developer bills $85 to $135 an hour here against $20 to $52 in India and $28 to $68 in Vietnam. The case for hiring domestically is timezone, contracting simplicity, security or regulatory constraints, and the depth of the senior and specialist bench. If none of those apply to the work, every market on this site prices below it.
