Observed, not derived. Rates we quote and place at in Indonesia, by seniority level, on the same basis as every other market page here. Indonesia shares Vietnam's junior band and prices below it from mid-level up, which is the opposite of what published network surveys report.

Indonesia rates by city

Mid-level full-stack, modelled from the Numbeo cost-of-living index against Jakarta, Sep, 2026. Only cities with a published index appear here.

Indonesia · modelled city hourly rate, Sep, 2026
City Cost of living vs Jakarta Hourly rate Basis
Jakarta The overwhelming majority of the country's senior engineering supply and its entire venture-funded startup base. Rates on this page are anchored here. 30.1 1.000x $24-$62 modelled
Denpasar A remote-work and digital-nomad hub rather than an engineering centre, so the bench is small and skews toward freelancers already billing overseas clients. 24.8 0.824x $20-$51 modelled
Bandung A university city with a strong junior pipeline and the lowest cost base of the three, but a thin senior market. 23.3 0.774x $19-$48 modelled

Why the city column barely moves. The widest cost-of-living gap between these cities is 29%, and the modelled rates differ by less again. A freelancer billing an international client prices against that market, not against local rent, so city is the weakest lever on this page. Treat the column as a tiebreaker between two otherwise equal candidates and nothing more. Every figure in this table is modelled from a consumer price index rather than measured from observed rates, which is why it carries a different badge from every other table here.

What really impacts the cost?

In Indonesia seniority moves the rate more than any other lever, and the role premium is measurable against a published baseline.

What moves the rate in Indonesia

Indonesia is the largest market in Southeast Asia by population and it prices slightly below Vietnam from mid-level upward, while starting from the same junior floor. The breadth of the junior pipeline is the reason: a very large domestic market absorbs new developers every year, so entry rates stay competitive and the premium concentrates on the smaller pool with strong English and overseas delivery experience.

Supply is broadest in web and application work serving a very large domestic market, so product and front-end benches are deep. English proficiency spreads more widely than in Vietnam but less than in the Philippines, and it is the single biggest driver of variance between two Indonesian candidates on paper identical.

Pushes the rate up

  • Strong written and spoken English, which separates otherwise identical candidates more here than any other driver on this page.
  • Senior and lead engineering, where Jakarta holds almost all the supply and the market is genuinely competitive with regional hubs.

Pulls the rate down

  • Hiring at junior level, where a very large domestic pipeline keeps entry rates competitive.
  • Web and application work, where the domestic market has built the deepest bench.

Estimated Cost by Project Scope

How the Indonesia figures are built

The rates on this page are observed in Indonesia at each seniority level, not a United States figure scaled by a ratio. At mid-level they work out at about 0.39x the United States rate for the same role, but that ratio is a consequence of the rates rather than the way they are produced.

Domestic employment surveys measure what an employer in Indonesia pays a local employee. This page measures what a freelancer bills an international client, and the two populations are far apart in every market on this site. Both figures are correct about different questions, so they are never divided into one another.

Only the full-stack figure is observed directly. The other nine roles scale off it by the difference between their band and the full-stack band, which is why a machine learning engineer prices above a PHP developer here by the same proportion as anywhere else.

Freelancer or employee?

The rates above are contractor rates: you pay for hours worked and nothing else. An employee costs a salary plus statutory employer contributions, and the comparison is not the one most people assume, because a freelancer at $30 an hour working full time is not cheaper than a $30-an-hour salaried equivalent once you account for the hours you do not buy.

If you are weighing a permanent hire in Indonesia instead, the salary rate cards price employment by country and role, with local currency bands and employer costs.

Questions buyers ask

How much does it cost to hire a freelance developer in Indonesia?

A mid-level full-stack developer in Indonesia bills $24 to $62 an hour, which is $3,840 to $9,920 a month at 160 billable hours. Junior rates run $18 to $30 and senior rates $34 to $86. These are rates we quote and place at in Indonesia rather than a United States figure scaled by a compensation ratio, because the gap between junior and senior here is roughly twice what United States wage data predicts.

Which roles are cheapest and most expensive to hire in Indonesia?

Of the ten roles on this page, PHP Developer is the cheapest at $18 to $46 an hour and Machine Learning Engineer the dearest at $33 to $86, both mid-level. The spread across roles inside one market is about 4.8x, which is wider than the gap between Indonesia and most other markets for the same role. The skill matters more than the map.

Which platform is cheapest for hiring full-stack developers?

On fees, Arc charges nothing on hourly work and Upwork takes 3% to 10%, the lowest of the channels that publish anything; Toptal publishes none. On rates, Upwork spans $25 to $150 an hour and Fiverr $25 to $100, against $70 to $200 on a vetted network. The channel is the smallest lever you have: fees span 0% to 25%, while on this page geography moves the same hour about 4.3x and seniority about 2.6x.

Is Indonesia cheaper than Vietnam?

Slightly, from mid-level upward, and identically at junior level. Both markets start at $18 an hour for junior work. A mid-level Indonesian developer runs $24 to $62 against $28 to $68 in Vietnam, and the gap holds at senior level. Published network surveys report the opposite ordering, because they measure what developers ask for rather than what engagements actually close at.

Which Indonesian city should I hire in?

Jakarta for senior and lead roles, because almost all of that supply sits there. Bandung is worth targeting for junior and mid-level work: its cost base is about 23% below Jakarta and its university pipeline is strong. For remote freelance work the city matters far less than it looks, since the rate follows the international market rather than local prices.
