AI & machine learning band. AI band. No wage survey publishes AI-native engineers separately, and the work that defines the title (directing coding agents, reviewing what they write, owning the context and evaluation they run on) is priced with AI engineering rather than with general application work. Agent seats and model tokens are paid on top of the rate.

AI-Native Engineer rates in the top 10 hiring markets
Mid-level hourly rate, Oct, 2026. Every figure is the United States band scaled by that market's published compensation ratio. Three of the ten have a country median published by name and three carry the rates we quote and place at in that market; the rest carry their region's ratio and are marked as such.

What sets the rate for AI-Native Engineers
An AI-native engineer is a software engineer whose default way of working is directing coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor and GitHub Copilot, then reviewing, testing and merging what they produce. That is a different purchase from the AI engineer and AI developer pages, which price building AI into a product. Here the AI is how the product gets built, so the total cost has two lines: the engineer's rate, and the agent seats and model tokens they run on. Our AI-native engineer interview guide covers how to test for the habit before you pay for it.
The tool line is small next to the rate. Anthropic reports that Claude Code averages about $13 per developer per active day across enterprise deployments, or $150 to $250 a month, with 90% of users under $30 a day. Seat prices as published on 17 October 2026: a Claude Team premium seat is $100 a month billed annually or $125 monthly, GitHub Copilot Business is $19 per seat a month, and Cursor teams start at $30 per user a month. At $150 to $250 a month, agent usage is about 0.5% to 1.3% of a mid-level US contractor billing $19,040 to $29,600 a month at 160 hours. If you hire an AI-native engineer through Second Talent at $29 to $39 an hour, billed monthly ($4,599 to $5,999 for 160 hours), the same usage adds about 2.5% to 5.4%. Agree up front who pays for seats and tokens, because a contractor who carries them prices them into the rate.
Pushes the rate up
- Agent work in a large, older codebase. Getting useful output there takes context files, tests the agent can run and careful review, and that judgment is what senior rates pay for.
- Owning agent spend and permissions. An engineer who sets token budgets, picks models per task and decides what an agent may run without approval is doing platform work on top of feature work.
Pulls the rate down
- Greenfield features with good test coverage, where agents do most of the typing and review is quick.
- Supplying the seats and API keys yourself. A contractor who carries their own tool bill prices it into the hourly rate, usually with a margin on top.
Estimated Cost by Project Scope

Questions buyers ask
How much does it cost to hire an AI-native engineer?
In the United States, a mid-level freelance AI-native engineer costs $119 to $185 an hour, which is $19,040 to $29,600 a month at 160 billable hours. Junior rates run $95 to $142 and senior rates $155 to $235. The range is derived from a published US employee median of $189,500 a year, loaded with the payroll, insurance and leave costs a contractor carries themselves rather than an employer. Through Second Talent, a vetted AI-native engineer from Asia costs $29 to $39 an hour, billed monthly, 50% to 70% less than a US hire, with a shortlist of 6 to 8 candidates in 24 hours and $0 cost until you hire.
What is the per hour rate of an AI-native engineer?
It depends almost entirely on where they are. A mid-level AI-native engineer bills $119 to $185 an hour in the United States, $119 to $185 in Canada, and $28 to $72 in India, the cheapest of the ten markets on this page. Seniority moves the rate about 2.5x from junior to staff level, following the wage distribution the US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes for software developers.
How much does a freelance AI-native engineer cost per month?
At 160 billable hours, a mid-level AI-native engineer costs $19,040 to $29,600 a month in the United States and $4,480 to $11,520 a month in India. Freelance engagements are billed on hours worked, so a month with fewer billable hours costs proportionally less, which is the main way this differs from a salary.
Is it cheaper to hire an AI-native engineer freelance, in-house or through an agency?
At mid-level in the United States a freelancer bills $119 to $185 an hour, an employee costs $130 to $205 once recruiting, equipment and management are loaded on, and an agency bills $230 to $380, which is 1.5 to 2.5 times the individual rate for a project manager and cover if someone leaves. Freelance wins on short or uncertain scope because you can stop paying. Employment wins once the work outlasts a year.
Which platform is cheapest for hiring AI-native engineers?
On fees, Arc charges nothing on hourly work and Upwork takes 3% to 10%, the lowest of the channels that publish anything; Toptal publishes none. On rates, Upwork spans $25 to $150 an hour and Fiverr $25 to $100, against $70 to $200 on a vetted network. The channel is the smallest lever you have: fees span 0% to 25%, while on this page geography moves the same hour about 4.3x and seniority about 2.6x.
What is the difference between an AI-native engineer and an AI engineer?
What the AI is for. An AI engineer builds AI into the product: models, retrieval and agents your customers use. An AI-native engineer builds any product with coding agents as the main tool, so the output is ordinary software shipped faster. Both sit on the same band here. Hire the AI engineer when the model is the product, and the AI-native engineer when speed of delivery is.
How much do coding agents add to the cost of an engineer?
Less than most buyers expect. Anthropic reports that Claude Code averages $150 to $250 per developer a month across enterprise deployments. Seats run $19 a month for GitHub Copilot Business and $100 a month for a Claude Team premium seat billed annually. Against a mid-level US contractor at $19,040 to $29,600 a month, agent usage is about 0.5% to 1.3% of the total.
Is an AI-native engineer more expensive than a regular software engineer?
On this page, yes. The role is priced on the AI band, at $119 to $185 an hour for a mid-level engineer in the United States, because no wage survey separates it yet and the closest published pay is AI engineering. What the premium buys is an engineer who already works this way, rather than one you train on your own time and tool budget.
Who should pay for the AI tools, the company or the contractor?
The company, in most cases. Company seats keep your code under your own data retention settings, give you one bill with usage reporting, and stop the tool bill turning into a hidden rate premium. A contractor who supplies their own tools prices them in, and you lose control over which models see your code.
