NLP is the one AI rate on this page that has been under downward pressure rather than upward. General-purpose language models absorbed a large share of what used to be bespoke NLP work: classification, extraction and summarisation that once justified a specialist now often does not. What remains genuinely specialist, low-resource languages, domain-specific extraction with accuracy requirements, and anything where a general model is too expensive or too slow, still prices at the top of the AI band.

Do I still need an NLP engineer, or will an LLM do?
For most general text tasks an LLM is now cheaper and better, and hiring a specialist for them wastes money. Hire an NLP specialist when you have an accuracy floor a general model misses, a language it handles badly, or a cost and latency budget that rules out calling a large model on every request. Those three cases are where the classical toolkit still wins outright.
Is NLP the same skill as LLM development?
Overlapping but not identical. NLP people tend to be stronger on evaluation and error analysis; LLM people tend to be stronger on systems, retrieval and cost. For anything with a correctness requirement the evaluation skill is the one that pays for itself, because it is what tells you the system is failing before your users do. Both price in the same band here.
