The work itself is ordinary engineering done in an unusual place, inside the customer's environment, against their data and their definition of correct. What moves the rate is the customer-facing half rather than the code, which is why a quote that reads like a senior full-stack quote is usually pricing only half the job.
Pushes the rate up
- Being the named engineer on a strategic account. When one person is the customer's only technical contact, the engagement cannot be handed over mid-flight, and the rate carries that.
- Working on the customer's clock or on their site. Travel, restricted environments and their working hours are all rate items, and the last one quietly removes the timezone saving that pays for an offshore hire.

- A defined integration rather than an open-ended deployment. Naming the data sources, the success criteria and who signs off before the engagement starts pulls the quote back toward ordinary application work.
