AWS Statistics, Adoption. 50+ AWS Statistics, Adoption, Usage, and Future Trends 2026, by Second Talent.
TL;DR: AWS made $42.2 billion of revenue in the second quarter of 2026, up 37% on a year earlier. It is still the largest cloud provider, with 28% of the worldwide market on Synergy Research Group's count.

Amazon booked $53.4 billion of pre-tax other income in the second quarter of 2026, most of it from marking up its stake in Anthropic. That is more than three times what AWS earned from operations in the same quarter.

Anthropic buys from AWS too: in April it committed more than $100 billion to AWS over ten years.

Key takeaways
  1. 1Amazon’s backlog of signed long-term contracts, most of them for AWS, reached $496 billion on June 30, 2026, up from $195 billion a year earlier.
  2. 2Amazon expects to spend about $200 billion on capital expenditures in 2026, most of it on AWS.
  3. 3Amazon’s custom chips business passed a $25 billion annual revenue run rate in the June 2026 quarter.
  4. 4The October 2025 outage in Northern Virginia ran for 14 hours and 32 minutes from first impact to full recovery, by AWS’s own timestamps.

How Much Revenue Does AWS Make in 2026?

AWS reached a $169 billion annualized revenue run rate in the second quarter of 2026, Amazon’s results release says. Segment sales were $42.2 billion, and growth of 36.7% was the fastest in 18 quarters.

Growth sped up in each of the last four quarters: 20.2% in Q3 2025, 24% in Q4, 28% in Q1 2026 and 36.7% in Q2. For the whole of 2025, AWS sales were $128.7 billion, up 20%, with $45.6 billion of operating income.

AWS segment revenue by quarter in billion US dollars, split into operating income and operating expenses: Q2 2025 30.9 with 10.2 operating income, Q3 2025 33.0 with 11.4, Q4 2025 35.6 with 12.5, Q1 2026 37.6 with 14.2 and Q2 2026 42.2 with 16.6, from Amazon results releases and filings.

Profit grew faster than sales. AWS operating income rose from $10.2 billion to $16.6 billion between the June quarters of 2025 and 2026. That puts the Q2 2026 operating margin at 39.4%, on our calculation from Amazon’s segment table.

Amazon’s finance chief Brian Olsavsky put the 2025 margin at 35% on the fourth-quarter earnings call, and warned that it would “fluctuate over time” with the depreciation on AI spending.

What Is AWS’s Share of the Cloud Market?

Amazon has lost two points of share in a year while posting its fastest growth since 2021. Synergy Research Group puts worldwide cloud infrastructure spending at $143.4 billion in Q2 2026, up 43%.

Amazon held 28% of it, Microsoft 20% and Google 15%.

Worldwide cloud infrastructure services market share from Synergy Research Group, Q2 2025 compared with Q2 2026: Amazon fell from 30 percent to 28 percent, Microsoft stayed at 20 percent and Google rose from 13 percent to 15 percent.

The slide has been one point at a time. Synergy had Amazon at 30% in Q2 2025, 29% in Q3, then 28% for three quarters running. It says Microsoft and Google “continue to achieve substantially higher growth rates.”

Trailing twelve-month market revenue reached $500 billion.

What Synergy counts. Its market covers IaaS, PaaS and hosted private cloud services. Amazon’s AWS segment covers “compute, storage, database, and other services,” so AWS’s reported growth and Synergy’s market growth do not measure the same thing.

The same release counts two AI labs with $100 billion AWS contracts as cloud providers in their own right.

Synergy names CoreWeave, OpenAI, Oracle, Crusoe, Nebius, Anthropic and Nscale as the fastest-growing tier-two providers, and counts nine neoclouds in the top 40. Our cloud computing statistics cover the wider market.

How Big Is the AWS Backlog?

The backlog grew by $252 billion in the first half of 2026 alone, on our subtraction from Amazon’s filings. The June 2026 10-Q reports $496 billion of commitments not yet recognized on long-term contracts, most of which Amazon ties to AWS.

Amazon's commitments not yet recognized on contracts longer than one year, mostly AWS, in billion US dollars: 195 in June 2025, 200 in September 2025, 244 in December 2025, 364 in March 2026 and 496 in June 2026, from Amazon 10-Q and 10-K filings.

For most of 2025 the figure moved little: $195 billion in June, $200 billion in September. The contracts are also getting longer. Their weighted-average remaining life went from 4.0 years in June 2025 to 6.4 years in June 2026.

Big AI deals explain the jump. On the April 2026 call, Andy Jassy said the $364 billion March figure “does not include the recent deal that we announced with Anthropic for over $100 billion.”

He added that the backlog is “not just one customer or two customers.”

What the backlog is. Amazon counts commitments on contracts with original terms over one year. Its filings say the timing of that revenue “will be driven by customer usage,” so the total is not a schedule of future sales.

Anthropic, OpenAI and AWS: The Deal Numbers

Anthropic agreed on April 20, 2026 to spend more than $100 billion on AWS technologies over ten years, for up to 5 gigawatts of capacity.

Anthropic’s announcement covers Trainium2 through Trainium4 chips, with nearly 1 gigawatt of Trainium2 and Trainium3 capacity due online by the end of 2026.

AI lab compute commitments to AWS drawn as circles sized by contract value: Anthropic more than 100 billion dollars over 10 years announced April 2026, OpenAI expansion of 100 billion dollars over 8 years in Q1 2026, and the original OpenAI deal of 38 billion dollars over 7 years from November 2025.

OpenAI signed a $38 billion, seven-year deal for Nvidia GPU capacity on AWS in November 2025. Amazon’s 10-Q says the two expanded it by $100 billion over eight years in the first quarter of 2026.

OpenAI also committed to about 2 gigawatts of Trainium capacity, ramping from 2027.

Those stakes now swing Amazon’s profit. Most of the second quarter’s other income came from $50.5 billion of upward adjustments to its Anthropic preferred stock.

On June 30, Amazon carried that preferred stock at $92.5 billion and valued its Anthropic convertible notes at $97.9 billion.

Trainium, Graviton and Bedrock by the Numbers

Amazon’s custom chips went from a $10 billion business to a $25 billion one in two quarters, measured by annual run rate. The results releases put Trainium and Graviton together at over $10 billion at the end of 2025.

Counting Nitro as well, the business passed $20 billion in the March quarter and $25 billion in June.

Jassy told analysts in April that Amazon had “over $225 billion in revenue commitments for Trainium.” Trainium3 started shipping in 2026.

Amazon says Trn3 UltraServers hold up to 144 chips and deliver up to 4.4 times the compute of Trainium2 UltraServers.

Graviton, AWS’s own server processor, is used by 98% of the top 1,000 EC2 customers, and more than 130,000 customers run Graviton-based servers. Amazon says over half of all new processing power added to AWS runs on it.

AWS still buys Nvidia at scale. It announced plans to deploy more than 1 million Nvidia GPUs from 2026, then in August 2026 2 million more for 2027 and 2028, including 100,000 GPUs for US government AI factories.

Bedrock customers spent more in the second quarter of 2026 than in all prior quarters combined, Amazon says. It now counts “hundreds of thousands” of customers, and more joined in the last six months than in Bedrock’s first two years.

In the first quarter, Bedrock processed more tokens than in all prior years combined.

The model list now spans rival labs. Amazon added OpenAI’s GPT-5.6, Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5, Google DeepMind’s Gemma 4 and SpaceXAI’s Grok 4.3 in the June quarter.

Our guide to every OpenAI model explains the GPT line now sold through AWS.

How Much Is Amazon Spending on AWS Data Centers?

Amazon’s free cash flow turned negative: an outflow of $7.6 billion for the twelve months to June 30, 2026. The company blames a $66.1 billion rise in capital purchases, “primarily” for AI.

In February it said it expects “to invest about $200 billion in capital expenditures across Amazon in 2026.”

Waterfall of Amazon purchases of property and equipment by quarter in billion US dollars: Q3 2025 35.1, Q4 2025 39.5 calculated from the annual report, Q1 2026 44.2 and Q2 2026 54.2, adding up to 173.0 billion over twelve months.

Purchases of property and equipment reached $98.4 billion in the first half of 2026, against $57.2 billion a year earlier.

Jassy said on the February call that the spending is “predominantly in AWS,” and that AWS added 3.99 gigawatts of power in 2025, 1.2 gigawatts of it in the fourth quarter.

“And we are monetizing capacity as fast as we can install it.”

Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO, Q4 2025 earnings call, February 5, 2026

Costs are rising under the plan. In April Jassy said “the cost of components, particularly memory, has skyrocketed,” and that Amazon had worked with suppliers to secure enough of it.

On the same call, Amazon said AWS pays for land, power, buildings and chips six to 24 months before it starts billing customers.

How Many AWS Regions Are There?

AWS’s global infrastructure page lists two more Regions announced, in Saudi Arabia and Chile, with 7 more Availability Zones.

The Saudi Arabia Region is due in December 2026, backed by more than $5.3 billion of planned investment, and will take the count to 40.

That footprint exists for applications spread across several Availability Zones. A single web server needs none of it and can run on VPS hosting, one rented virtual machine.

Amazon’s water figures are the newest part of its data center reporting.

In July 2026 it said its data centers are over 7 times more water-efficient than the industry average, and that it is 75% of the way to its goal of being water positive across data center operations by 2030.

What Happened in the October 2025 AWS Outage?

An empty DNS record took down much of AWS’s Northern Virginia Region on October 19 and 20, 2025.

AWS’s post-event summary traces it to “a latent race condition in the DynamoDB DNS management system that resulted in an incorrect empty DNS record for the service’s regional endpoint.”

The event ran from 11:48 PM PDT on October 19 to 2:20 PM PDT the next day. DynamoDB was back by 2:40 AM.

EC2 launches kept failing until 1:50 PM, because the system that manages EC2’s physical servers had to rebuild its leases, and Network Load Balancer errors lasted until 2:09 PM.

Impact windows by service in the October 19 to 20, 2025 AWS outage in Northern Virginia, Pacific time, from AWS's post-event summary: IAM console sign-in 23:51 to 01:25, DynamoDB 23:48 to 02:40, Security Token Service 23:51 to 09:59, Amazon Connect 23:56 to 13:20, EC2 launches 23:48 to 13:50, Network Load Balancer 05:30 to 14:09 and Lambda 23:51 to 14:15.

Instances that were already running stayed healthy, AWS says.

The damage fell on anything that needed a new connection, a new instance or a sign-in: Lambda, Amazon Connect, the Security Token Service and IAM console logins all logged errors.

AWS disabled the DynamoDB DNS Planner and DNS Enactor automation worldwide, and said it would fix the race condition before turning it back on.

It is also adding a velocity control to limit how much capacity a single Network Load Balancer can remove during a failover.

“We apologize for the impact this event caused our customers.”

AWS Certifications and Training Numbers

AWS now offers five AI certifications. The newest, AWS Certified AI Business Strategist, opened its beta exam for registration on September 1, 2026, AWS says. Its Skill Builder site lists over 330 free and paid learning resources on AI.

The pay figures AWS quotes come from a study it commissioned. That study found employers willing to pay up to 47% more for IT workers with AI skills, 43% more in sales and marketing and 42% more in finance.

In August 2026 AWS committed more than $500 million to student training through a Student Rewards program.

A verified student can earn up to $30 in AWS credits, a $100 certification voucher and 12 months of premium Skill Builder access, worth $579 in total by AWS’s valuation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of Amazon’s profit comes from AWS?

About 60% of operating income in Q2 2026, on our calculation: AWS earned $16.6 billion of Amazon’s $27.5 billion. Net income is a different story, since gains on the Anthropic stake sit outside operating income.

How many customers does AWS have?

Amazon does not publish a total. Its releases give counts for single services such as Bedrock and Graviton. The “4.19 million AWS customers” figure that circulates online does not appear in Amazon’s filings or results releases.

What does Amazon expect for the third quarter of 2026?

Amazon gives no AWS-only forecast. For the whole company it guided to net sales of $197 billion to $202 billion and operating income of $22.5 billion to $26.5 billion, against $17.4 billion of operating income in Q3 2025.
