Deel Contractor Alternatives [Oct, 2026]

By Eric Cheng, Head of International Business 9 min read
Deel alternatives for contractors, a Second Talent comparison
TL;DR: To keep a direct contract with each contractor but pay less than Deel’s $49 a seat, Remote and Oyster list $29, Multiplier $40 on annual billing, and Papaya Global starts at $5. To stop holding the contracts yourself, 4dev.com takes the counterparty role and charges a service fee of 3% or less per task instead of a subscription.

Deel now serves more than 37,000 businesses and closed a $300 million Series E at a $17.3 billion valuation in October 2025, so teams rarely leave because it fails. They leave over the bill and the contract model.

Twenty contractors cost $11,760 a year at Deel’s $49 seat price and $6,960 at $29, before anyone checks whether the cheaper tool does the same job.

Key takeaways
  1. 1Decide the contract model first. Moving from a direct agreement to an intermediary changes who your contractors sign with, not just the software.
  2. 2A percentage fee beats a flat seat for small or irregular invoices; a seat wins once a contractor bills a full-time amount every month.
  3. 3Remote’s cheaper plan bills a contractor for any month they sign, invoice or get paid, so an onboarding signature alone can count.
  4. 4No platform carries signed Deel agreements and invoice history across for you. Export them before you cancel.

1. 4dev.com

4dev.com contractor platform homepage, 2026
3% or less service fee0% for contractors150+ countries

4dev.com is the pick for companies that want to stop being the direct counterparty to every contractor.

You order work through Fourdev LLC, a Wyoming company that onboards, verifies and pays the contractor, then issues the closing documents your finance team needs.

It is built for digital product teams in software, game development, edtech and creative work, and says more than 1,500 teams use it across 150+ countries.

Contractors pay nothing to join or withdraw, which makes the switch easier to sell to them than a tool that takes a cut of their pay.

Work runs as Tasks, each with a scope, a budget and a delivery date.

Under 4dev’s published contractor terms, the budget is reserved the moment a contractor accepts, invoices are generated on the contractor’s behalf, and IP in the deliverables is assigned to your company at Task completion, confirmed on the invoice.

Contractors pass a KYC check once their fees reach US$200, and 4dev covers bank charges on one non-SWIFT payout a month.

Every Task, contract and closing document sits in one register with one-click export, approvals can be set per company, country or team, and bulk import and an API handle larger rosters.

  • Best for: Teams paying many contractors per deliverable that want IP transfer and closing documents handled for them.
  • Watch out: Your contractors move onto new terms with Fourdev, so existing Deel agreements are replaced, not transferred.
  • Published price: Up to 3% of task value, falling with monthly volume; no subscription, nothing charged to contractors.

2. Remote

Remote contractor management page, 2026
$29 per active contractor190+ countries73 payout currencies

Remote suits companies that want to keep a direct agreement with each contractor and stop paying for idle seats.

Its standard Contractor Management plan costs $29 a contractor, and its help center defines a billable month narrowly: the contractor signed a contract, submitted an invoice or received a payment.

Months with none of those cost nothing, and billing runs after the month closes. For a roster of part-time or project contractors, that makes it the cheapest direct-contract option on this list.

A contractor onboarded mid-month is charged pro rata for the days left.

Contractor Management Plus, at $99, is a fixed fee billed in advance whether or not anyone works.

Contractor of Record, at $325, makes Remote the contracting party instead of you, the same price as Deel’s. Startups that have raised pre-seed to Series A can get 15% off Contractor Management for 12 months.

Remote pays out in 73 currencies with guaranteed FX on eligible payouts and builds classification guidance into onboarding. Before switching, run one engagement through invoice approval to see who approves and when funds leave.

Our Remote alternatives page covers its EOR side.

  • Best for: Rosters where some contractors go quiet for a month or more.
  • Watch out: An onboarding signature makes that month billable even before the first invoice.
  • Published price: $29 (active months), $99 (Plus), $325 (Contractor of Record).

3. Oyster

Oyster Global Contractors page, 2026
30 days free$29 per contractor after120+ currencies

Oyster is the low-risk way to test a move off Deel, because Global Contractors is free for 30 days and then costs $29 per contractor a month.

It is fully self-serve: contracts in 180+ countries, in-app identity checks, invoice and expense approval, and payment in more than 120 currencies.

A built-in misclassification analyzer flags engagements that look like employment. An add-on called Oyster Shell offers aggregate misclassification protection of up to $500,000, sold as a separate subscription.

The contract stays between your company and the contractor, so this is a like-for-like swap for Deel’s standard plan.

Use the trial to test the migration rather than the interface.

Import a handful of contractors, push one invoice and one expense claim through approval, and check how a contractor with a half-finished milestone gets paid for the part already delivered. That is where switches usually go wrong.

Oyster also sells a contractor-to-employee conversion service through its EOR, which matters if long-term contractors are drifting toward employment. See our Oyster alternatives for its EOR pricing.

  • Best for: Teams that want to trial a direct-contract replacement before committing.
  • Watch out: Oyster Shell is priced separately; the $29 seat does not include it.
  • Published price: $29 per contractor a month after a 30-day free period.

4. Papaya Global

Papaya Global contractor operations page, 2026
From $5 per contractorCOR from $1991,000+ bulk onboarding

Papaya Global is built for large contractor populations where the per-head price decides everything.

Its contractor solution starts at $5 per contractor a month, the lowest published entry price here, and the page routes you to a quote, so get a written price for your own volumes and payout countries.

The feature list reads like an accounts-payable tool: invoice management, invoice-to-pay automation, self-service onboarding, document collection and mass onboarding of 1,000 or more contractors at once.

Contractors are paid through Papaya’s payments layer, which it markets as OnePay for contractors, with worker wallets.

If you want someone else to hold the contracts, Papaya’s Contractor of Record starts at $199 per contractor a month across 160+ countries, well below Deel’s $325.

That gap is the strongest case for Papaya when the reason for leaving Deel is COR cost rather than seat cost.

Papaya fits finance-led teams already running payroll in several countries; a five-person startup will find the sales process heavier than it needs. More options sit in our Papaya Global alternatives list.

  • Best for: Hundreds of contractors where invoice-to-pay automation saves real finance hours.
  • Watch out: Pricing is quote-based above the headline, and the sales process is longer.
  • Published price: From $5 per contractor a month; Contractor of Record from $199.

5. Multiplier

Multiplier homepage, 2026
$40 billed annually$49 billed monthlyCOR $400

Multiplier is the closest match to Deel itself: contractors, Contractor of Record, EOR and global payroll on one platform, with a published rate card.

Contractor management costs $49 per contractor on monthly billing, the same as Deel, or $40 if you commit to annual billing.

That $9 is the main reason to move a stable roster, and across 20 contractors it comes to $2,160 a year. Lock in annual pricing only for contractors you expect to keep all year; the saving disappears if half the roster leaves by month six.

Because EOR and payroll sit in the same account, a contractor who becomes a full-time hire can move onto Multiplier’s EOR without a second vendor.

Its Contractor of Record plan is $400 per contractor a month on annual billing, higher than Deel’s $325, so it suits teams chasing the cheaper seat rather than the cheaper COR.

  • Best for: Stable rosters that will commit to annual billing.
  • Watch out: Contractor of Record costs more than Deel’s.
  • Published price: $40 (annual) or $49 (monthly) per contractor; COR $400.
How we checked. Prices and terms come from each company’s own pricing pages, product pages and published terms, read on October 24, 2026. They are starting prices before FX, bank charges and add-ons. We did not run paid trials or score the products against each other.

How to move contractors off Deel without losing records

  1. List what is open: live milestones, unpaid invoices and pending expenses, each with an owner.
  2. Export first: agreements, invoices and tax forms, before access ends.
  3. Set a cut-off date: work accepted before it is invoiced in Deel; a milestone that straddles it needs a written split.
  4. Re-paper where needed: 4dev.com or any Contractor of Record means new agreements, so tell contractors why first.
  5. Reconcile one cycle: match Deel’s last payment run to the new tool’s first, then cancel.

Classification risk stays with you

A new platform does not change whether a contractor is legally a contractor. Under the IRS common-law test, a remote worker is your employee if you control what is done and how. California’s ABC test is stricter still.

The Department of Labor proposed on February 26, 2026 to replace its 2024 contractor rule with an economic reality test.

For US contractors, the 1099 reporting threshold rose to $2,000 for 2026 payments; check the new tool files at that level.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest alternative to Deel for contractors?

Papaya Global lists $5 per contractor a month, quoted. For small, irregular invoices, 4dev.com’s percentage fee or Remote’s active-month billing often costs less.

Can Deel contractor agreements move to a new platform?

Not automatically. Bulk import moves profiles, not signed contracts, so expect new agreements.

When is it better to stay on Deel?

When the roster is stable and the saving after migration work is small. A cheaper seat is not worth re-papering contractors mid-project.
